Donnie Darko The Directors Cut 2004 DVDRip XviD-PTi

My first old pick has to be “Donnie Darko”, which was released by ViTE on February 18, 2002 (on good old DivX). Odds are you’ve heard about this movie, but for anyone who hasn’t, this is seriously a must get. I’m going to let the synopsis sum up the storyline, because the movie is much more than just the story. It’s about the atmosphere, the dialogs, the soundtrack, the feel and how it is portrayed visually.

Much of “Donnie Darko”’s appeal has to do with the fact that it is a small, low budget (less than $5 million) film that won a huge following of viewers who have become fascinated with it and raise theories about events in the movie to this day. This is evident by the fact its been rated by over 131,000 people on IMDB. Considered a cult classic, the movie hasn’t lost its charm 7 years after its limited release. I doubt it will for years to come. Maybe it’s because it just doesn’t come across as pretentious. It’s a wild ride that is consistently interesting, humorous and romantic, and it stays with you for days after you’ve watched it. Jake Gyllenhaal does an incredible job here, and it’s safe to say that this film made him. No one knew who he was before this role. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jake’s real-life sister, who has become quite a popular actress herself, is in the movie too, playing who else but his sister.

The cast also includes Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and Jena Malone. Amazingly, this cinematic success is the work of a relatively anonymous Richard Kelly, who hasn’t done much worth mentioning since, possibly with the exception of his upcoming film “The Box (2008)”, but that literally remains to be seen. “Donnie Darko” scores an average of 8.3 on IMDB and 83% on RT, and should be appreciated fully in this Director’s Cut, released by group PTi in 2004.

Hope you enjoyed reading, and even if you skipped everything and just went for the download that’s fine with me. I’ll appreciate any feedback on this post and the staff picks idea in general – too long? too boring? liked it? maybe this post made you discover a new film? Thanks.

Synopsis: In a funny, moving and distinctly mind-bending journey through suburban America, one extraordinary but disenchanted teenager is about to take Time’s Arrow for a ride. October 2nd, 1988: just another ordinary day in Donnie Darko’s teen-aged existence. He’s taken his medication, watched Dukakis and Bush debate, and had dinner with the family. Then comes an outrageous accident. Out of the blue, a 2,000 pound jet engine plummets from the sky and crashes into Donnie’s bedroom, obliterating it. Luckily, Donnie isn’t in bed. Or is it luck? As Donnie begins to explore what it means to still be alive, and in short order to be in love, he uncovers secrets of the universe that give him a tempting power to alter time and destiny.

Watched it twice when it came out. Did not get it.
    Bunny meant what – nothing?
    Time changed?
(Dont bother explaining to me, heard the explanation enough times to understand it was far above me.)

This is one of the greatest films out there. I’ve seen it about 3 times, and theres so much to it. Many answers are obviously left unanswered the first time you see it. If you get the commentary and the directors cut, it’ll clear things up quite a bit though :)
    Highly recommended

but it’d be nice if you guys wud mention whats so special about the directors cut, whether or not it’s worth downloading if you’ve already seen the “standard” version.

Definitely worth it to see both versions… if only the retail DVD was easier to find, I’d actually buy it.

Brilliant film, it has more going for it than pretty much every film that came out the last two years combined. We need more movies like this, thought-provoking, shocking, intelligent.

The director’s cut does explain the story a little bit better. If you liked the standard version you might want to give this a go. It explained a few things that I didn’t understand after watching the standard version. I still prefer the standard version over the directors cut though.

If you read this (http://whedonesque.com/comments/14286) several people say the theatrical version of Darko is actually superior to the director’s cut.

    February 13th, 2008 | 18:08

Director’s cut isn’t worthwhile. It makes the entire experience less fun, as it tries to explain too much, and thus, decrease the enjoyment of your own musings on the film. It also adds inexplicably out-of-place Photoshop cuts, which were puzzling and only served to break up the flow.

Skip this version and get the original, it’s a far superior effort.

  32. basketcase57
    February 13th, 2008 | 18:08

I’ve only seen the director’s cut and i thot it was awesome. my friend who showed it to me has seen both and he said the director’s cut was easier to understand so he liked it better. i don’t know how easy it would even be to track down the original.

    February 13th, 2008 | 18:14

This movie is great..those that just don’t understand are weak and don’t have an open mind to time travel and spiritual awakening..the bunny Frank(the kid from the doom generation) is trying to warn Donnie the whole time that sh1t is going to hit the fan and he will end up dead if Donnie doesn’t do the right thing and let the airplane kill him in the beginning instead of cheating death as he does in the beginning …thats why the whole alternate reality comes into play

Okay, now i’m rolling with the cool guys after declaring that i know the movie and thought it was the greatest ever. Which it was, in my opinion. But still, i don’t like it how you people always gotta write that “Yeah, i know that movie”, it’s the same as those idiotic “first!” comments.

  41. Barabbas
    February 13th, 2008 | 18:32

Well, obviously opinions differ on this matter, but do !not! watch the DC! It doesn’t explain more, it explains too much. It steals the mystery. You could argue this is how the directory wanted the movie to be (obviously), but the original cut is still way better!

  42. sedan
    February 13th, 2008 | 18:39

that’s why it sucks. this movie’s charm is in explaining it yourself. but for a dumbed-down audience, the cheesey sfx of the dc might just suffice…

#30 (donald) does anyone have the link for the DVDRip torrent of the theatrical version?

:It isn’t on any public trackers. Released by ViTE, so if you have any private trackers, newsgroups, or can use rapidshare you can try to find it there. I did a quick search in RapidLibrary but only found a French one.

Not seen the movie but I have been asked at least 50 times if I have… so thatnks for the opportunity. Shame we see 38 posts and no adrive/yastorage. I’ll take the slow road with the torrent, and seed. :)

(ps. I tried netload for another movie posted on here, and was getting 15kbps! That’s slower than a low-seeded torrent! not impressed. Typical speeds: 3 times quicker with adrive but some incomplete downloads, and 15 times quicker with yastorage and flawless as always)

found just links of old postings about Donnie.Darko.2001.720p.HDTV.x264-THOR and or a 1080i OAR, but no sources.

    @Martin31
For those measly 300mb you get a bit better Video KBS and Sound. 700mb doesn’t always do justice to a movie seeing that the Theater version lasts 113mins and most movies are around 90mins.
It is only an extra choice as ViTE’s version is harder to find on public and if it is still out there with seeds you should feel very lucky.

I think it would be more enjoyable to watch theatrical first, then DC. That’s how I watched them a couple of years ago (about a month gap between watching the 2).
Movie is excellent anyway, but theatrical release leaves more space for personal interpretation … with DC I felt like I was being spoon fed the interpretation … not that that was bad, in my own interpretation there were parts that I totally couldn’t make sense of :D
All in all, one of my best movies ever!

Alright EoN, it’s just some people prefer 700mb so they can burn it directly to a cd. But if you just keep it on your HD or burn it on a dvd, you can use the 1.09 GB version. I just prefer things I can burn directly down… Save the space for all my music ;)

hey guys, recently you are putting the rotten tomatoes rating in many movies, that is great! i remember the time that only the imdb rating was present, so i want to tank you for this and say that you should put the rt movie link too. that will be very helpfull. i prefer to see the review of rt than that of imdb, the first are more professional.

  76. February 13th, 2008 | 21:05

@ “it must be said” (73)

To make the site even more fun for its readers, we thought about recommending movies that *we* like, during slow days.

Hence, we post a release tagged ‘Staff Pick’, to make it clear that this is not a new release. You can read what we have to say about it, or just look up information about the title yourself.

No one is forcing you to read the post, and you can just use the links.

Nothing is more lame than criticizing people who are giving you a service for free.

This is the most over hyped, pseudo-intellectual piece of garbage I’ve ever seen. It’s not an awful movie, but the fact that teens around the world praise this film as being different, and smart, when in fact it’s just random crap, pisses me off to no end.

That being said, the Original cut is indeed the better version.

@76 Bleez. Great idea… the scene/p2p world has been real slow for the past few weeks and its tough to keep coming here and seeing no posts after hours. I’d very much welcome a break in the silence with staffer’s recommended picks. A little apprehensive about Mr. X’s pick but we’ll see what he brings to the table. :D

Emo’s love this movie. Hence why it’s an emo movie, find any emo and say donnie darko and he/she will start creaming in their pants and possibly slitting their wrists.

Emo’s is correct because emo is an abbreviation and when you make abbreviates into plural you use an apostrophe.

Director’s cut are usually a bit longer than the theatrical version.
More nudity, violence, offensive language and/or heavy use of drugs. (or none of the above: The Abyss D.C.1989).

    But in this case IMDB
    http://imdb.com/title/tt0246578/
states that the theatrical version is 113 min and D.C. is 133 min.
But this release say it’s 129 min..
    The Director’s Assistant’s Cut..?

I just watched it again last night and I got to thinking… if you were to take away the time travel element of this movie and just focus on the concept of his belief of impending doom, he would be in one of the most terrible situations ever at the “end” of these unfortunate events.

That and the whole thing about Graham Green’s short story “The Destructors” pretty much portrays the Jokers mentality in Batman: The Dark Knight. Green seems to be worth checking out.

Fight club falls into this whole ambivalence category too.
