Domain suspended – What really happened

So i have been always trying inform you about almost all stuff that regards this site, I’ll try to explain what really happened in last 12 hours. Many of you were propably a little shocked when you saw “This domain is temporary suspended” notice instead of the usual content of RLSLOG. This was the first time when something like this happened and I really hope there will be no need to repeat this in the future.

The whole problem was a mail (or two) from a copyright organization called BayTSP. This bunch of idiots gathers pretty much every bigger publisher, distributor and artist under their “company” and protects them from copyright issues. One of their clients is also the ESA, a US organization doing basically the same thing for US game developers. The whole magic of BayTSP is some bot they developed which browses the internet and collects information about products of their clients. When this bot finds something like torrent or any other form of download, it dispatches an email to administrator of that website with endless paragraphs of legal talk. What it does not is to really check the URL of the affected site, so it can easily send a message to a completely legal site like ours (well it’s a bot after all).

The obvious lack of human’s in the loop results in the fact that they usually reply to your email after 7 days or so, which is kind of long when they request “immediate” removal of some content. So our server ISP received 2 of those mails, specifically for MOH:A and Manhunt 2. No matter there was NO torrent link in the post (and if there was one, they should mail the administrator of such a torrent site offering this torrent, not us). However, people in our ISP were little inpatient and 24 hours after this mail suspended the whole domain (midnight). I was partying at some club in this moment so didn’t have a clue something like that happened. Finally, when I woke up few hours ago, I noticed the whole problem and started negotiating with the ISP about re-opening the site, which took me another few hours of a not very pleasant conversation.

Anyway, the site is running again right now and I hope this was the last issue like this. We have to decide how to prevent repetition of this whole thing, which may be either stopping to post the torrent links, rapidshare links (also in comments) or even moving the site to another hosting. I’ll inform you about the outcome of this situation later.

good luck with that! Was wondering indeed what happened with the site..

Hosting providers can become a bit scared when some random lame company sends a serious letter :’)

    a serieus letter?
lot’s of words but not mutch deeds, just like the riaa etc.
some people get shitted very fast and if they don’t check up with the site admin about it then you get this kind of stuff.
So the plan is to get more people into the rls crew then martin?

  8. September 16th, 2007 | 12:53

ah c’mon dont remove the torrent links : (

    September 16th, 2007 | 12:57

yeah remove rapidshare, torrents are still more of a grey zone and a link to a site with a torrent is different from a link to a site with a direct download

  15. jigsaw
    September 16th, 2007 | 12:58

Usual rubbish from the big companies. Maybe adverts can point you in the direction of the torrents. Mostly the same site all of your torrent links lead to.

    But….

This is like a really good magazine to read and I would be sad not to be able to read it!

Thanks again for all your hard work

  16. pshhhh
    September 16th, 2007 | 12:58

when you put only the exact name of the torrent in the article, we can just google it by copy/pasting it and bam, the torrent is there :) )))

so we dont need links to torrent or rapidshare, just google :) ))

    screw capitalism.

  17. Lynx
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:01

well I have never downloaded anything from a link from this site, I have my own resources, so it probably would be best to remove the links because it really isn’t hard to find these torrents. However I use this site religiously to keep up with the latest info and releases and really find most user comments very useful before downloading, so it would be devastating to see it go.

So lets shut down google, yahoo, msn, and any other search engine because they link us to “illegal” downloads aswell.

  18. September 16th, 2007 | 13:02

I think we need to remove rapidshare link and plus to delete all comments who contain rapidshare links…

  19. niko
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:03

I have no opinion about rapidshare links, because I don’t use them. However I use the torrent links, this is a very useful feature. But if you are paranoid about those links, you always can obfuscate them with javascript. No bot will be able to open the links.

  20. TQD
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:05

It shouldn’t be hard to block / filter the rapidshare links

  21. Alkaline
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:05

How about negotiate something with your host? Have them talk to you first before taking any actions upon RLSLOG.

    And, Mike’s right ;)

  22. Crux (Admin)
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:06

The best thing for you to do as being able to protect your site and offer information is to remove ALL torrent and rapidshare links, prohobit URL / HTTP in comments.

Most people who come here know where to get stuff anyway, the rest who is not that knowledgeable is a great risk for you.

  23. Charlie
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:09

I also say remove any links to rapidshare or torrents. You can find those anywhere, but real reviews are hard to find.

  24. The_Doctor
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:10

Keep the nti links, but the rapidshare links should go since the DO contain copyrighted materials directly linked from your site, even if a user posted it. Changing hosting companies would be a very good idea… since you have issues with your hosting company, why not just get a cabinet and take a direct line from someone, just bypass the whole hosting ordeal. Whatever cabinet space you have left over you can resell. it will spare you fro future attempts, now places know they can go straight to your hosting provider and get you turned off with just a bot letter.. wait until the Web Sheriff gets on them, then rlslog will be gone.

    September 16th, 2007 | 13:13

I really think that the removal of all torrent and rapidshare links would help and anyone who can’t find the releases without the links are just stupid … and if u are going to move to another host then u could maybe add some categories to the site too , like games->action,simulation,driving etc

  27. NuZZ
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:14

People could attempt to sabotage the website spamming tones of RS links.

But obviously stupid, this shouldn’t happen.
I say just keep going the way we are and if something similar happens again – take action.

For all we know it won’t happen again.

  28. September 16th, 2007 | 13:14

I hope i can help because i have a good knowledge of the law but i dont know where you are located.

Torrents ARE legal to post a link to because you are:
    1) not hosting it on your site
    2) a .torrent is not copyrighted material (the files in the .torrent are)

Rapidshare links are most likely to be illegal because its a direct link to the copyrighted (most of the time) material

  29. viranth
    September 16th, 2007 | 13:17

Just don’t post any rapidshare etc or torrents. People know where to get it anyways, and I for one only come here to check for new releases.

Good site, hate to see you go down.

    September 16th, 2007 | 13:19

Glad to see Rlslog is back. Didn’t realize how much I depend on this site until the site went down. Sure there are other places where you can get your news but this one stands out for its great descriptions, links to information (imdb, trailers, etc.) and occasional blooper shot…

The torrent links are a nice-to-have, definitely don’t need the rapidshare ones, however both can be removed. I think everyone would agree with you on this.

    Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I went so far as to track down the NewTorrents IRC and log on to see what was happening and the nice folks there were able to give me SOME info. Heh.

I don’t use Rapidshare, or the links on here, just the news. So personally I’m not affected if either are removed. However legally speaking, I’m sure you should be okay with the torrent links. The Rapidshares are a hard call when they are in comments. Maybe get away with it with a disclaimer about not being responsible… but that won’t stop bots. What about making a login system? Bots don’t usually create accounts and log in to sites….

Good to see rlslog back up.
It’s educational to learn of the cause. yep, that would be effective enough – email the server host and implicate the site user, and then not being able to ftp into your server. Total Bummer. You might check into a provider such as hostfresh.com (HongKong) or aims.com.my (asian comm exchange) I would think the nocs would not be so irrational from scripted form letters sent by an auto bot system.
Nothing like better filtering to divert the spam right back to where it originated from.=] let them sort it all out then. Its all about the imaginary numbers and pointing the finger- maybe the other finger? hehe

I’m glad the site is back, even gone for a short time I realise how much i rely on it. My patience for trolling torrent sites is non existent. So please keep things running even if it means moving to a foreign site or something.

as for the RS links .. i could do without them anyway. But shouldn’t the ESA or whoever be bitching to them??? I mean really. If ppl insist on RS links, I would recommend that they be posted elsewhere (perhaps warez-BB.org or similar) … or maybe posted on personal blog and then linked. If it’s a ‘commercial’ ty[e site where they get posted, perhaps rlslog could setup some referal ad revenue share or soemthing. I dunno. anyway, removing the links would clean up the comments anyway. :D remember this site is great because of it’s REVIEWS and quality/nuke information. Stops me fom wasting time on useless crap. the IMDB/RT/nTi links make life easier as well. very thankful for that.

  55. September 16th, 2007 | 14:16

Hey,Love the site hate to see you go down. I’d reccomend you remove ALL rapidshare/megaupload links and ALL torrent links.
Instead simply just name the exact torrent off Nti/Mininova/Isohunt/Piratebay and then make a small page which describes how to get their. But without actually giving a link to the torrent. Thanks for all the info appreciate it.

    September 16th, 2007 | 14:16

Switch providers, a provider that actually listens to these e-mails is stupid. It’s just scare tactics, they can’t do a damn thing. So, really switch to a different provider because suspending the site over a bot generated mail, and even without any communication is unacceptable.
Which provider does rlslog have anyway?

  57. rippk
    September 16th, 2007 | 14:17

ya, even with no links you would have got the notice, so don’t freak too much! Wish the content owners would see this as advertising their stuff and not just illegal downloading. If a movie is truely good or an album actually good … I buy it. Few and far between in last years though, the content sucks. lol. It’s not like any of us would ever be buying ALL the stuff we find in torrents if the torrents weren’t there … the cost would be astronomical. Even a movie/album a day ends up equating to about 10 thousand dollars in a year – no one can afford that!!!

Now: Check the logs, find the IP of the bot, publish…

Then it just might be that the IP-range in question gets a lot of traffic… garbage traffic… but a lot of it…

I’m all for fighting these guys the hard way. Hit them online, find personal info and hit them offline… we don’t need no stinkin’ self-proclaimed ‘internet police’ who just are too stupid to write bots than can tell the legal stuff from the illegal stuff. If you can’t do it right – just don’t do it. This downtime is gonna cost them and the fun part is finding out just much it’s going to hurt them – and how… ;)

You could easily create a members section which opens up links and comments.. as stated earlier, bots don’t log-in, they just get stuck at the login screen. Also, any torrent file, even if you host it is not illegal in any form. Rapid share is.. Just enable a members section, prevent url postings, and move hosts.

Really, by taking down the nti links, you are just giving into the demands of a bot letter and anyone else that comes after you. I think the links speak more about having the freedom to have them on your site, legally, and the mpaa and riaa pawns are more or less restricting your freedoms. Has anyone initiated a torrent sites association yet? It might be a good idea to start getting other sites involved and under one legal umbrella.

    Welcome back guys.
I really enjoy the articles posted on this site.
The information about NUKES and quality especially.
Most of us can find our own info, including nukes, etc…
BUT, this site presents the (legal) information about said release in a quick and friendly way.
    Possible actions to take:
Change ISP (although easier said then done).
    Require Login.
Encode entire site (requiring PGP or such, providing the key to members in good standing)
    Remove RapidShare links and such.
Remove Torrent links, since you just really link to a link already (just provide the availability status of the [encoded] filename).

I agree wholeheartedly with #15 jigsaw: This site is like a very good E-magazine.
One that most of us read daily.
Keep up the good work and don’t let them sh*tfuc*ers get you down.
Their companies are PROFITING off the fact that free torrents exist.
We do this for free ;?
    & we’re better @ it.

I have to agree with post 16. If you post the name of the torrent, a google searchbox could get us there.

I thought this will be story repeating (hyppoh anyone?), specially when I think there’s not a site like this one.
Just thinking of the amount of time rlslog saves me…I have even bought some of the movies featured on this site, that I, living in Spain wouldnt be able to know about, like us release only movies.
It will be very very sad day for me if this site close down for good.

    Hey dude,
Fairly new to this site and only discovered it recently and it’s become one of the first things I read every single day!! Love what you’re doing and keep up the great work – Don’t let the bully’s push you around, you have a lot of people backing you and willing to help out in any way that we can! If you must remove the torrents, then so be it .. but you won’t loose your audience, that’s for sure!

If there so called bot, impedes on your freedom of speech (ie this website), is this not deprivation of liberty ??.. There service is causing your website to be “temporarily suspended” or whatever they done, this in itself constitutes deprivation of liberty… I would send em a mail, outlining, if there dumb ass bot crawls your site and causes it to get “temporarily suspended” once more, you would seek legal advice/ counsel….. it’s the bark that scares them more so than the actual bite

  95. September 16th, 2007 | 17:10

change the webhost. the webhost is should be desperate for you monthly bill. if they’re not there are thousands of other hosts you can easily give your money too instead, martin. they obviously don’t think to highly of you either, so why aren’t you treating them the same way? customer is always right, they are the ones who pay the bill to keep the company in business. therefore ditch them for being little sluts to you.

  96. Kovski
    September 16th, 2007 | 17:22

There is absolute no reason for posting the torrent-links, since they know they can get them through newstorrents, all you could say is “Torrent uploaded on Newtorrents” so then you are not even in the greyzone

  97. Wankstar
    September 16th, 2007 | 17:33

About rapidsharelinks – perhaps we could throw them in a comment-section on another site? Perhaps under thepiratebay.org’s site?

  98. The_Doctor
    September 16th, 2007 | 18:00

Throw rapidshare links in thepiratebay.org? You know… I don’t think they will really like that too much and it would sort of put them in a position of actually being in trouble and not being able to be asses to the MPAA and etc.

The torrent links HAVE to stay, in fact, I say store the torrent files on the site. By removing the links you are giving up your freedom to have LEGAL content on your site, even keeping the torrents locally is LEGAL. Absolutely nothing with the torrents can have any affect on the site. As I said before, removing them means you just bent over and got a sausage fest from the mpaa and riaa up the you know what.

What ever happened to good old Internet activism and fighting for our rights? Even the FSF has sort of lost it, yet if it wasn’t for them and GNU the world would ruled by microsoft. Look at thepiratebay, mininova, if they were intimidated, they would be gone.

Just move hosts, in fact, don’t even use a host, no web account or dedicated server, get set-up the right way. You should be in full control of your domain, and your IP. A threat from a bot shouldn’t have you tame down the site, you should be beefing it up, get bigger!

  100. September 16th, 2007 | 18:09

If you dont want to leave torrent links you should just post the MD5 hash# for the torrent instead, thats what im going to do when i open the release blog on my site.

  101. Panda
    September 16th, 2007 | 18:13

    The Anti-Botting Panda says:

All you need to do is look for the signature of the bot when it hits your site. The combination of USER-AGENT and other items will identify it as not a regular browser.

Then just insert some script into this blog system so that, when the bot is detected browsing the site, you return a 404 instead of the normal page.

It should be pretty easy to look at the server logs and pinpoint the signature of the bot amongst all the browser hits.

Definitely grab the server logs from your hosting provider and go through it looking for this bot. I’m sure lots of people here will be willing to help if you want to split up the huge logs and distribute it around to speed up the search.

After that, it’s merely a minor scripting adjustment, and no more bot!

    Good luck!

    1. Get rid of Rapidshare links.

    2. Do not get rid of Torrent links. Simply provide a link to the torrent page – not the torrent itself.

    3. Change your webhosting company. It seems like for a small thing – they get scared and close your site. Find a better host who wont be so scared.

  107. blunden
    September 16th, 2007 | 19:51

Just remove RS and torrent links. We don’t need them. This will also tidy up the comments from all the “Where is the torrent?!!!!!1111one” and the likes. Seriously, if you can’t even search for a public torrent (or preferably use a better source for your downloads), you don’t deserve it. I mean, you could probably even google it and find it faster than waiting for a reply to your question.

And about BayTSP. How can they justify demanding immediate removal of content when they can’t even reply to your questions the same day? To do that I think you should have to have phone or email support 24/7 or only be able to ask the webmaster to remove it in the same time they take to answer. Well, I guess these Anti-Piracy people never were especially good at the truth, the law or logic. :(

I’m glad that RLSLog is back up. I don’t come here for the torrent files, or RS links, I come here to read about new movies that I might otherwise never have known about. Once I have the title, I usually turn to Usenet. I’m not in favor of censoring sites to satisfy the American media corporations (BTW, I’m American), but if you have to delete the torrent files and RS links in order to keep this site running, I’d rather see that happen, than to see the site disappear completely. Honestly, the one time I tried to use a torrent file from this site, I kept getting a message accusing me of being a leecher and my speed was about 2K.

  124. Nico
    September 17th, 2007 | 02:37

Men, this is a great magazine, as it was mentioned above, get rid of RS links on posts and comments, just keep the name of the torrent… everybody can do a bit of copy+paste right?

Thanks for all your hard work!

  125. SweatLoaf
    September 17th, 2007 | 04:36

Much as I hate censorship, I’d have to agree with the majority here. . . if it’s problematic, drop the links – Your coverage is one of the highlights of my feedreading, but I dodge the site most of the torrents are hosted on based on their popups anyway.

The solution can be to link to other sites that have torrent download links.

So it should be no legal hassle to give a google search link or to link some site like this one http://torrentscoop.com/. They dont link to the torrent , instead they link to the torrent sites.

just a tech note… i don’t think content provided in FLASH is indexed and cached by “web crawlers” like google or BOTS.

i may be wrong, but a members area where the various bits of info were small flash text files would only viewable by actual people.

too much work for most of these copyright places to mess with.

then they kinda have to read all of the legal stuff.

torrent links will be fine, aslong as your ISP understands the concept of torrents and that they do not contain content, your torrent links do not link to content, however rapidshare directly links to content so i would drop linking directly to content just to prevent problems. and i would talk to the ISP and make sure they know what a torrent is, so noone can take down the site claiming links to content.

hope you solve future problems ;) and that your ISP stays true and understanding

Just an idea, maybe you could put one of those random generated codes with a background that only humans can read not the bot like what they use to stop BOTS signing up to email/accounts/stuff. it claims to stop bots. you could put this step on RS and Torrent links.
