Domain Pizza.com sold for $2.6 million

A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m – after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994. Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction. It’s crazy, it’s just crazy,” Mr Clark, who lives in North Potomac, Maryland, was quoted as saying by the Baltimore Sun newspaper. “It will make a significant difference in my life, for sure,” he added. Mr Clark registered the domain name in 1994, when the world wide web was just starting. He had hoped that pizza.com would help to get a contract with a pizza firm for his consulting company.

He sold his business in 2000, but kept paying the $20 annual fees for maintaining the domain, which he also used to sell advertisements. In January, Mr Clark decided to sell it after hearing that another domain – Vodka.com – was sold for $3m in 2006. “I thought, ‘Why don’t I just try to see what the level of interest is?’” Mr Clark said. “If someone’s willing to pay that much for Vodka.com, maybe there’s more interest in pizza.com.” The online auction was launched on 27 March. The first bid was $100, jumping to $2.6m a week later. Having accepted the latter offer, Mr Clark hopes to get his windfall in a few days’ time when the transaction is completed.

@11 My guess is that pizza.com is run as a functional site about pizzas so some MegaCorp can’t easily lawyer the owner’s ass off and steal his domain. If it doesn’t start to redirect to a corporate website sometime soon then the buyers were clearly morons.

Donno, that website is clearly wrong. It claims pizza.com to be $1000 and rlslog $11000. By my estimates (2.6m (value of pizza.com) x 11 (the difference)), rlslog.net is actually worth $286m.

  32. No-Neck

@31…Yea your estimate could be valid. But Pizza.com was bid on.And actual value and auction price are 2 different things.I checked another calculator that quoted rlslog.net @ $116.00us.But i think its cool to be able to turn an investment into a windfall.Hope rlslog never sells.Or I’ll be back to trolling and filtering the junk on isohunt and tpb again lol.

Actually cyber squatters – registering domains for no reason other than to extort money out of companies later – can be challenged in the courts. It just so happens Pizza.com is generic enough that no one company can say it is infringing on their name. If you registered disney.com and tried the same stunt you’ll find yourself in court and probably lose.

Imagine how many people type the search word “Pizza” in Google. The site may be rubbish, but it has advertisements pasted all over it.

I know someone who owns a very popular “Domain name” (he’s not a nice person, so i won’t give him free advertisement) he does nothing with it, the site is basically empty except for a few ads, and he makes 2k a month from it. So basically… he makes 2K a month for doing NOTHING. I own 3 sites, and only update them once a month. All together i make just under 1k a month. It’s a real nice monthly bonus. Keeps a smile on my face knowing I’m getting money for free =)
