Do you play FPS Games? Go to jail!
A little scary news arrived from Germany (by the way, you can go to prison if you download a movie there as well). We all probably remember a one month old attack of 18 year old student who wounded at least 27 people in his school. As the message says, he was a huge fan of popular action game Counter Strike, and something in his brain probably fucked up, so he decided to try it “live”. As a result of this tragedy, two state governments in Bavaria and Lower Saxony have drafted legislation which, according to the Financial Times, would “subject developers, distributors and players of video games whose goal is to inflict ‘cruel violence on humans or human-looking characters’ to a fine and a maximum of one year in jail.” If the measures pass, German gamers, amateur and pro alike, will have to lay off the FPS games for quite a long while and stick to more traditional non-violent games. May be a free copy of The Sims would do the trick?

The Sims can be violent as well. For example, if you don’t like somebody very bad, you can fight him/her.

well I think that if The Sims are violent as well, you would find something in every game. Pacman’s killing these other “monsters”, Tetris is demolishing lines full of blocks and Commander Keen also has some sort of weapons
Here in Germany noone is happy about this decisions… the problem are the old people who make laws and never played such games themself….

Damn conservative politicans. Hopefully these laws won’t pass congress. They would not only hurt gamer (DSL is cheap in Germany so most of them would dl the games anyway
) but also the economy and ger. reputation.
And btw, there have been censored versions of computer games that were released in Germany due to the violence, e.g. HL 1, where you shoot at robots. Things like that just suck for most of the people (over 18), and that has nothing to do with protection of minors.
But seriously, most of the politicans who request even harder laws were born during WWII (looong time ago) and probably never played such a game or talked to gamers.
Btw² Martin, you forgot to mention that this debate is not limited to Germany. EU Commissioner for Justice, Franco Frattini, and the British politican John Reid are other politicans who certainly don’t like Counter-Strike etc. and want to forbid them

They should just ban guns. Sure, you can still kill people with knives or clubs or your bare hands if needed, but a kid who snaps in school and goes on a killing spree with a knife isn’t going to injure anywhere near 27 people before he gets taken down.
On a larger scale, we should really be putting more effort into researching genetic engineering and cloning technologies. Determine before people are even created that they will be balanced stable and healthy, and the world will be a better place.
As for all the religious kooks who think technology is an affront to their imaginary gods, just round them all up in 1 place and drop a nuke on them. It will be far less violent in the long-run, and the future generations will thank us.
