vlc media player can easily hard code subs and stream it back so you can save the file with subs to burn to dvd. one thing cool is that you can play vlc faster and speed the process up.

As Terry says above, if you watch your DivX/XviD files in a stand-alone player, the best option is to have them included in the video as image subs (xsub format). This way, you don't have to worry if your player supports srt text subs in your own language. Just google for AviAddxsubs, an excellent tool!

@Epiquestions: DivX 6 is no longer just a codec, it also is a container format. The subs go into the container, but not hardcoded to the movie itself. So it shouldn't take that much time to add the subs.

For those who do not wish to learn how to use Virtual Dub, FairUse Wizard is awesome at making copies from DVD to DIVX. This just a few minor editing options. To add subs to divx just google for the .srt file and your player should be able to add it.

I paid $35 for a Divx Ultra certified player, that plays nearly every media format known. I burn tv series and movies to dvd-r's, with nice menus, multiple audio tracks and subs, just like a regular dvd. This is the real benefit of the divx format, since their actual player software sucks.

Please note that it would take a couple of hours (2+) to hardcode subs since it is not just placing the subs "on top" of the video so to say. It is inserting it into the video, so some reencoding is necessary and a loss of video quality(not really noticeable) is expected.

I personally don't like hardcoding subs(except for anime) but to each his own. Good Luck :)

follow up to Lol_Gadaffi... Or if you're new to ripping try Auto Gordian Knot. You still need to learn virtualdub for editing though

@Terry
Divx certified players can handle subs(hardcoded or not).

@tony
Search for the subtitle of the movie in http://www.divxsubtitles.net/
http://www.opensubtitles.org/
http://subscene.com/

Just rename the subs to be the same name as the avi and place it in the same directory. VLC,PC w/ vobsub installed,DVDplayer(divx compatible) should be able to play it with the subs.

If you want to hardcode(meaning put the sub in the file so only the avi file is needed) the subs then use AviRecomp it's free

Tutorials are here
http://beans.seartipy.com/2007/05/20/step-3a-merginghardcoding-subtitles-with-avidivxxvid-files-using-avirecomp/

Or for all help with videos just go to videohelp.com you'll find lots of tutorials and software for your multimedia needs

For those asking about cutting and pasting bits of videos, just get VirtualDub. It's free and does this job perfectly (along with more).
