Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing: The Very Best Of (Remastered) (2008)

The Sunday evening is a fine time to post some good music and it would be a great shame to miss this release: a legendary British rock band Dire Straits, which was extremely popular back in 80s and 90s mainly in Europe, returns in this Remastered version of their Best Of. Sultans Of Swing: The Very Best Of features 16 rock singles which will throw you back to 20-year ol’ good rock.

This compilation repeats seven tracks from 1988’s Money For Nothing anthology. Given that Mark Knopfler and crew have recorded one new album during the decade between best-of collections, how different could Sultans of Swing be? For one thing, CD dominance has made for longer compilations, and this one is fleshed out by singles, three tracks from 1991’s On Every Street, and Knopfler’s solo “Local Hero” theme, performed live. More importantly, the second track here is the band’s terrific second single, “Lady Writer,” previously only available on the otherwise dismal Communiqué LP. Five tracks from Dire Straits’ huge Brothers in Arms LP appear here, but only two tracks surface from Making Movies, the group’s pinnacle achievement. Ultimately, if you own Making Movies and this compilation, you own the essential Dire Straits.

How is this different from the 1998 edition? And don’t say “it’s remastered”, ’cause that one was remastered too.

Unfortunately it’s only 107mb…for 16 tracks?! For a band known for their pro recoding dynamics with a massive soundstage, and carefully engineered imaging; it would be nice to see something in a lossless format.

With all the low end releases coming out thesse days, it’s always nice to hear a decent band that understands that you can take time to record an audiophile quality CD; i-Pod’s aren’t the only thing people listen to music with, some of us still care about sound quality.

On the flip side, I haven’t downloaded yet so I apologize if I am wrong and this is actually a decent rip, but looks like a tin can, overcompressed MP3 to me, too bad.

MARTIN: Thanks for the post all the same, but I think I’ll go buy it instead.

I totally agree with @10. This is a waste and shame. This release deserves FLAC (I will rip into WAV), not MP3.

That is the wrong version. I too can find links to that one. Better yet, I can open my desk draw and pull out the original CD release from the 80s. I’m looking to decide if I should bother with this “remastered” version and invest in a “new” copy of an old favorite.

Can someone please tell me if this is the official re-issue of their 1998 Best of album, because I can’t find this info on Amazon nor wikipedia. I got the original CD from 1998 and would like to know if I need to buy this new remastered edition. I agree with @10, not every music is to be played on iPods, some things are worth listening in best quality possible.

Hey, this may be scene news but what do I know?

Source: Keznews.com (FF users need to have Adblock plus and No Script enabled due to some ads)

Yesterday Microsoft released a new update for Windows Vista via Windows Update – KB940510. This update, when installed, will detect certain software used to bypass Windows product activation.

Here’s how Microsoft describes this latest update:

This update enables Windows Vista to detect activation exploits that bypass product activation and that interfere with usual Windows operation. An exploit is a form of software that replaces or modifies authentic Windows components. When exploits are present on a system, it indicates that a software or hardware vendor may have tampered with genuine Windows to enable the sale of counterfeit software. Therefore, the security and the privacy of the computer are put at risk. After this update is installed, you will know if exploits are present on the system.

    And here’s what it does:

When the update is installed, no functionality of your operating system will be affected. If no exploits are detected, the update silently exits. If exploits are detected, you will be provided a link to a Web site that describes how you can remove the exploits. When the exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate your copy of Windows. If you do not want to remove the exploits, Windows may disable the exploits and then ask you to use a valid product key to activate Windows.

Let’s take a look at this update in action. To do that we need a Windows installation that’s cracked by one of the hacks that this new update picks up on – I’ll be using the Paradox OEM BIOS hack.

Then we have to wait for the update to appear … this came in yesterday on some systems but not on others, so it’s a waiting game …

    … waiting … waiting …

    Ahh! There it is!

@fxyrslf My apologies, I used one of the torrents linked to on this page, and as I had nothing to compare it to, I assumed it was the scene release.

For anyone who did for some reason want the crappy non scene rip, password is sinlesslinks.com

I’m working on the scene release version now. I used Kamo’s link (comment 7). So if my upload really was bad quality, stay away from that torrent.
