When everyone finally saw it – and more than a little alcohol was consumed my livingroom erupted in the best discussion/fight I have ever seen in my entire LIFE! The Woman were actually “LISTENING” TO what brothers were saying, my wife and I were amazed at hearing all my words come out in a Movie almost verbatim. THANK YOU TIM.

She could identify with our progression and how much she has changed under my tutelage and Patient instruction. I am expecting to hear many more successes regarding this Movie!

I would like to point out that this is not a “proper movie” but is like a documentary, with the film owner playing horse by himself. Yes, the opening credits list in one caption “written, produced, shot, directed, edited and scored by Tim Alexander.” Like i was saying, the “film” stars the Haitian guy from Heroes Jimmy Jean-Louis as a black man going through the drama of marrying a black woman.

What basically happens is this Tim Alexander guy shot 17 scenes varying in length from 30 seconds to two minutes. the scenes show our casts in different “typical” situations like James and Tonya finds one of Tonya’s friend being beaten by his husband- and its been like that for 2 years and yet she still stays with him. After such a scene Tim Shows it to people across America, holding interviews and seminars to explore the thematics of that scene. In essence, The Diary is some kind of a docu-drama.

Personally, I didn’t enjoy it for a number of reasons. The movie serves as a talking point as it opens up both intra and inter-racial issues, in a more bold way. I commend this, but the hid behind sacrificed artistic vision and chose to have discussions as a way of expressing his vision. Maybe that was his vision, but if so, one tends to question some of his interviewing techniques where he solicits a guided response. The movie “something new” or “The Brothers” and indeed, “jungle fever” tackled these issues in a more satisfying way.

The movie also exposed the Haitian (sorry for the label) as a not-so-good actor. Maybe he is good so we can blame the . His dialogue is forced, stiff and stilted. I won’t comment about the camera work or else “I’ll be hating” but watch the scene when he goes to look for a new girlfriend in the club (bad scene location).

One last thing I didn’t like about the movie was the tendency not only to stereotype people, but also moralise situations. Maybe the writer/producer/director/scorer/editor is trying to tap into the lucrative church-going folks but the way he elevates the male actor to the point of being a saint while demonising females certainly leaves a lot to be desired. This exploitative tendency also manifests itself in the clip used to market the movie on the internet- having the Haitian bring to his ex girlfriend a white girl just so people could get talking.
