A few of my mates recommend this movie a few weeks back, as I’m not a bollywood movie viewer I ignored them. After a bit of research i might watch it after all. Dev.D is a 2009 Indian romantic drama film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The movie received mostly positive reviews. Times News Network termed the film as a “brilliant breakthrough for Bollywood” and rated it 5/5. It was embraced by the media, critics and public alike, and is considered to be a path breaking film depicting the youth of contemporary India. If you enjoyed the novel named Devdas, or a well known movie starring Shahrukh Khan titled the same, you would enjoy this.

Previously adapted for the screen by such revered filmmakers as P.C. Barua and Bimal Roy, Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D is a contemporary take on author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s popular novel Devdas. Traditionally, the story of Devdas finds the eponymous character, a legendary lover, becoming so despaired at the loss of his true love that he begins to veer down a perilous path of self-destruction. Alternately, this version of the story paints Devdas as a self-pitying hypocrite whose will is so weak that he cannot even summon the fortitude to stand up for himself. The son of a zamindar (tax collector), Devdas longs to marry childhood sweetheart Paro. Unfortunately for the would-be couple, differences in status and caste make the prospect of marriage impossible. Sent to Calcutta as Paro is married off to a wealthy yet aged widower, Devdas meets the prostitute Chandramukhi (Kalki) and ultimately falls into a tragic cycle of excess due to an overpowering sense of remorse.

    ppl who are aware of the org devdas wud enjoy this movie way more..brilliant modern day take on the drunk lover..must watch!!
    The director of this movie, Anurag Kashyap, is a David Lynch of sorts..Watch his other works that are equally good..No Smoking, Black Friday (best of the lot), and Gulaal (DVDRIP aint out yet)…

    Seriouisly, I dont understand the hype around this movie… this has to be the lamest storyline ever.. Im sure we all have seen our fair share of dopeheads and CSWs. Time wasted watching this crap

    There are a lot of excellent Bollywood movies out at the moment and they appeal to all nationalities. Releaselog should give them equal coverage as they are excellent family viewing.

    Treating it at face value, its a normal movie. But takin into account all the other crappy flicks bollywood dishes out this is a contemporary take of Devdas ( a brilliant original novel/play from yester-year). Overall its a bold movie with good direction and screenplay. And i feel that Slumdog was too over-hyped. Apart from ARR, the movie was even ordinarier than this!!!

    For the past 1 year (almost) I was nagging for this movie to be posted here, and fina. Frankly the director Anurag Kashyap is currently one of the best director under the sun. Recently saw another one of his movie GooLOL, and that was awesome too. And yes, this is gonna be one of the best movie of this year IMO. Brilliant work.

    If you know what "Romio+Julet" (starring Leo DiCaprio) was to Shakespeare's novel, then you can understand what this is for the original Devdas which is one of the best romantic novel ever written. Only in this case this movie is done in a way which is better than "Romio+Julet". Just ignore the loser who said that sex and dugs are its USP, he is deffo a moran. Finally ball-e-wood has found a world class director.

    My rating: 9/10

    That said this does NOT change my view about ball-e-wood as a whole.

    I have seen this flick 3 times @ multiplexes!

    Way to go! also the music is great as well. Very stylish background score and an awesome album!
