Demonoid Tracker Back Online, Site still Offline

It has been three months since the popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about its future, and many feared that the site would never return. Totally out of the blue, however, the tracker is now responding again.

The frontend of Demonoid is still hosted in the US, together with the popular Subdemon forums. Interestingly, the tracker - which has been offline for months - is now hosted in Malaysia, and has started to respond again, approximately 30 hours ago.

It is of course not clear what this all means, but without an official message from the Demonoid team, speculation has started. Could it be that the site has found a new host, and preparing a return? Many former Demonoid members are secretly hoping that this is indeed the case.

Last December, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, posted a message on the Subdemon forums on the possibility of a return. At the time he wrote: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

For those who forgot, here is a recap of what has happened so far. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.

So will Demonoid ever return? The fact that the tracker is back online, in a different location seems to suggest that there is something happening.

People re-up old Demonoid files with that nfo in there, you can get those from anywhere, just means it originated from Demonoid.

Demonoid was great because of the variety of the stuff you could find there. That plus the rare and old stuff that you couldn’t find anywhere else. Hopefully it will make a trimphant return soon.

An another and off topic note , HD-DVD is now finally and officially dead (as per Toshiba themselves). One of the staff guy should make a post about this since it would end the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD saga that has been going on on Releaselog for a few months now.

If someone wants to host their site in your country, it’s probably because it has a very effective judicial system and a firm concept of property rights. You should be proud. And there are better sites than demonoid people, in all the time its been down you could have found them instead of waited for demonoid to return.

There is/was no better tracker than demonoid. Anyone spouting nonsense about ther uber 1337 private tracker is an idiot. Demonoid was perfect because it had an open tracker but semi -closed site so it had more content than any private tracker but a community, basic ratio reporting and no fakes to set it apart from the big public trackers. Not to mention a great updatable interface for torrent descriptions and awesome search feature.

Demonoid owned. You could find anything. and if it wasnt already up, you requested it and someone posted it for you. There were rarely Viruses or fakes posted and the attitude were mostly friendly. It was the Epitome of sharing.
    Sniff! sniff!
    I miss it so.

For those of you who said that the demonoid tracker was still up and running ever since it went down, you must be mistaken. Maybe you had multiple trackers and you just thought you were downloading from demonoid. Whenever I tried it told me that the connection was closed, invalid tracker, or something similar. As for the “This Torrent Was Downloaded from Demonoid” text documents. Those will be included in a lot of torrents, but that doesn’t mean you’re downloading from demonoid. Some people just leave the text document in the folder when they upload it to different sites. I’m really happy to know they might be coming back though. Got many old shows and things from Demonoid that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I’m just glad I finished downloading Seasons 1-6 of Nash Bridges before they were shut down. And it was only by a couple days. Phew…

@53 Actually the last one i just finished downloading was 102GB of modern marvels and it was ONLY on demonoid tracker and i started it like a month ago. And that goes for several other torrents i got from there. Alot of stuff is still hosted on BT.

I still cant see why people think that piratebay is such a good tracker?

I know of no tracker that contains so much crap and fakes as piratebay, twenty versions of for instance prisonbreak where 50percent is fakes or nukes. and you find a lot more stuff on most any of the other big trackers. Only thing that it has going for it is that you can find swedish tvshows and movies on it.

I have really missed demonoid, it had good speed, good community and it was nicely organized.

Trackers are not required any more. DHT is the way to go. It works perfectly fine, and the blame cannot go to a single user. Websites keep trackers just as a bait - to attract people. i have made several trackerless torrents, ie if i stop the tracker, the torrents work perfectly fine with DHT. Might be a bit slow at start, but no majot loses in download speeds.

Sabin’s a great guy… He had helped alot of folks while I
was a regular user of the Demonoid community.

If Demonoid came back from the grave, I’d be all for joining it, as a full private site..
screw all the use of public tracker add-ons with it..

The layout of Demonoid was the greatest of ANY torrent site I’ve ever used.. either Private or Public.. Demois was really ahead of the game when it came to trying to make the site as user friendly as possible… The communtiy was good as well. since the demise of demoid, I’ve found other sites. I’ve grown, so to speak.. My very 1st torrent I ever shared was on Demonoid, and when it returns, I’ll be happy to share with them again as well..

This is really awesome news. Demonoid was indeed the best because of the outstanding community that had developed around it. Never many dead torrents, always good quality and great diversity, I miss demonoid very much and there was a point where I would honestly be able to get anything I could have ever wanted off of demonoid, without ever having to search any other sites, so far all you demonoid haters claiming that other sites are better show me one other site that you can claim that about.. ok I admit that since demonoid’s death mininova has come close and TPB will always be my fallback, but after Demonoid went I had to use btjunkie, tvtorrents, what.cd, mininova, torrentspy (whic sux now), and more just to keep up with my torrent habit.

When there finished with these copies they will up load them to their own private LEGAL BITTORRENT site where they will be available for Free download.
