Demonoid forcedly shut down by CRIA

It has been no longer than 6 weeks since our latest report about Demonoid, which scared thousands of its users. The site was taken offline by Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) that time, although many people thought it has been just technical issues with Demonoid’s servers. As a result of this closure, this popular tracker had to block access to all Canadians - they were simply getting timeout messages in their attempts to contact the server.

Now, when everything looked safe and sound, the site is offline once again. CRIA sent a threatening letter to Demonoid’s hosting provider (Netelligent.ca), which resulted into shutting down the whole site. Demonoid’s tracker still works and ironically wasn’t affected by this latest issue, although it’s the essential part in the process of downloading content through BitTorrent. According to the official IRC channel of this popular site, Demonoid administrator is already working on returning everything back to normal. I wouldn’t wonder if they decided to move their servers to different country and hosting company though, the pressure on p2p applications in Canada is increasing every week…

    What about the outrageous amount of taxes that you pay in Canada for that so called “privilege” of only being able to accept medical care from a government sponsored agency?

    Even the horrendous British system isn’t that restrictive that they forcibly prevent their citizens from purchasing medical care if they would like to.

    “What!?!!! This is preposterous! An organization trying to protect their interests from being robbed of their living!”

    You ignorant, corporate tool. First of all, the CRIA has nothing to gain from this, it’s all power moves and chest-inflating. Secondly, I know I don’t know you, but I’m pretty sure you’re not as rich as Britney, Justin or 50. Yet you’re defending their and their labels right to make millions upon millions of dollars from people who barely stay above the poverty level. How many times have you spent hard-earned money on a crappy movie or cd? How many times have you felt like you wasted money? If you feel gyped learn to live with it because that’s your only choice. That industry does NOTHING to guarantee your satisfaction. Most stores have a no return policy on movies, music and books. So for years they’ve been tricking us into buying cd’s or getting us into movies knowing damn well they have a product that’s mediocre at best. Well, I got a bit sick of spending my money on crap with no guarantees, making myself poorer while the rich get filthy f’n rich. This is my payback. I’VE been robbed by “Hollywood” too many times. I don’t care if Tom Cruise doesn’t get his 35 cents because I downloaded one of his DVD’s (I probably wasn’t gonna buy it anyway). Besides, I as I’m sure others have, have enjoyed certain things I downloaded so much that I went and bought them. Like I said, I’ve been burned in the wallet too many times and this just allows me to weed out the crap I wouldn’t want to spend money on. Like ‘Hot Rod’.

    @z@ph0d

    Well, one freedom you don’t have in Canada is to hold on to your own money. The government demands you give it to them so they can hand out subpar “free” healthcare to all 33 million citizens of Canada.

    Come to America, where we allow people the freedom to decide for themselves if they would like to spend their money on health care or not. If you’d rather use your money to buy a new 60″ plasma tv instead of healthcare, you can. In Canada, you can not. Thats just one example, like you asked for.

  7. Alfred
    November 10th, 2007 | 01:20

    @BrotherJustin

    It’s a little different than that. If you order a dinner in a restaurant, and you don’t enjoy it, you can’t just ignore the check when the waiter brings it. You still have to pay.

    Same thing with buying a movie or music, after you’ve watched or listened to it, you can’t just say “I don’t like it” and not pay. If that was an option, everyone would go to a movie theater and demand their money back on the way out after watching a movie.

    And you said that defendeing the “labels right to make millions upon millions of dollars from people who barely stay above the poverty level.” is anything near reality?? The label doesn’t have a “right” to make any money at all, they offer a product for sale, and people have the choice to buy it or not.

    And if someone is barely above the poverty line, they might make better choices to spend their money on than music and movies. In fact, if they watched less movies, they might have more time to make money and get out from under their poverty.

    I don’t think the amount of money going to the government to pay for a Canadian persons health care can be compared to the price of a 60 inch plasma. Plus go watch SiCKO it compares all health cares to USA.

    I vote that Oink, Demonoid, and The Pirate Bay
    purchase an island and setup an independent country
    and an independent ISP!

    First down was Oink, next was Demonoid.

    Which site is next?

    @ lee welton

    It would be so nice to live in a country like the USA, where only the wealthy can afford to pay for the insanely over priced cost of health care. I would love to live in a place were money comes before my health. It seems like such an ethical system. It would be great to live in a place were half the bankruptcy is caused by health care costs….It sounds like such a nice place to live.

    Canadian’s have plenty of choice when it comes to health care. We can choose whichever doctor we want, and we can go where ever we want for treatment. The only thing the government is involved in is the payment. True we can’t choose a private insurance company, but why would I want to have a for-profit company screwing me as I’m lying in a hospital.

    So with all the money I save I can go down to the States and buy that 60″ plasma. It’ll be half the price too, because the almighty US dollar isn’t so mighty. Then I can watch Corner Gas from my “free” hospital bed…. if I can find an open one.

    Come on guys, I covered this one pro-actively. Read post 96 all the way to the bottom. Feel free to sound out the bigger words if they give you trouble.

    And good luck affording that 60inch plasma TV after your cancer diagnosis - you’re gonna be in debt up to your eyeballs right up ’till you die. Or you could always just buy the TV, ignore the cancer, and die all the quicker. You can’t watch TV from the grave. Christ, even an appendectomy will put you in debt to the tune of a small house! Ya, great little system ya got there. Enjoy it.

    Having lived in both the States and Canada, I have to say on a purely anecdotal basis that I’ve always gotten far better and prompter care in Canada than in the U.S. So go ahead and make yourself feel better by pretending there’s no choice; it’s like car insurance, in the province I currently live in there’s only private car insurance but we get f**cked in the ass for it, whereas in B.C. the rates are faaaaar better and nicer to the consumers because of ICBC (a provincial crown corporation). So, yeah, they don’t get the choice. Thank gods I live in Alberta where we can can pay huge amounts of money to the provider of our choice, hooray!…..

    Somehow I don’t think it’s a good idea to entirely deregulate essential/needed services. Look at the push by the ISPs against Net Neutrality, for example. The consumer doesn’t really have a choice, but if the CITIZEN could have an impact…. if it came down to a straw poll or a referendum I’m quite sure that there at very least wouldn’t be strong enough support in Canada to shut down torrent sites like Demonoid, but because even in this “socialist” (yeah right) country power in that sphere is in the hands of an industry organization rather than a governmental/democratically-based one sites that are even technically legal are being shut down. For shame. If Canada was really as communist and lefty then we wouldn’t be having these problems with Demonoid and other such sites (like the IMSLP; check it’s website or its wikipedia entry for THAT tale of industry triumphing over laws and individuals)!

    What I don’t get is that the CRIA has absolutely no legal right to shut down demonoid. The CRIA already agreed with the Canadian government that they would get a portion of the sales of all blank media sold in Canada in exchange for the revenue they would lose by people downloading music in Canada off sites like demonoid. They made their deal and now they want to ignore it cause they are greey bastards who want more money. Seriously demonoid should fight it in court because as I said they have no legal right to do this.

    Your government (The Nixon era) actually helped the company’s in the health care industry to rob you of your money if you get sick in USA. Yeah, thats really great.

    Hope you enjoy your 60″ plasma tv while your dying of some simple decease, because you don’t afford the treatment.

Why are you debating (or fighting in some cases)? Do you honestly believe you’re going to convince anybody living in the US/Canada that the system in the opposing country is better?! Who cares?! Who cares if somebody is bashing your “perfect” healthcare system?! Let them be idiots, and live wherever you believe is better! There is no need to continue…why dont you stay on subject here?

    @Darth:

    Never wanted a Canada vs US debate, much less a health care debate. When posters started attacking Canada and Canadians over this whole CRIA nonsense I simply challenged them to back up their claims. The best they could come up with was uninformed blasting of our taxes and health care. I don’t quite know how that arose from the initial question of us lacking basic freedoms. That was the initial statement that I challenged (and am still waiting on a valid response to if anyone actually has one). I’m not trying to claim any sort of superiority, just to disprove this unfounded claims.

    “They need to move the servers to Africa or South America, some place where they have more worries than people sharing files with each other.”

    One of those worries is not having the internet infrastructure or hosting services to be able to do such a thing.

    Personally I can’t think of any worse place on earth than Africa.
    Another one of those “worries” they have is will the US withhold the aid they depend on because of a policy decision they’ve taken which annoys the US.

    “What I don’t get is that the CRIA has absolutely no legal right to shut down demonoid. The CRIA already agreed with the Canadian government that they would get a portion of the sales of all blank media sold in Canada”

    The levy Canadians pay on blank media has absolutely nothing to do with Demonoid or the illegality of it’s operations.

    The Canadian levy on CDs means nobody will be prosecuted for making a copy of a CD they own for personal use.
    That’s it. Nothing more.
    All P2P falls outside this exemption.

    So they have as much legal right to get demonoid shut down in Canada as they would in the US.

    All good things come to an end. Demonoid was the best out there for rare and hard to find torrents. Sigh. This leaves a dark day for us and for what? Ah, the almighty dollar, yes now I remember. I remember a time when I bought cassettes and actually taped music off this free thing called a radio without any reprecussions of either myself or the radio station getting shutdown. What’s next a house to house search for every recordable device in america?

    Some words for non-internet loving companies: This is how it works. Whatever you sink, we build back up. Whomever you sue, ten new pirates are recruited. Wherever you go, we are already ahead of you. You are the past and the forgotten, we are the internet.

    “oh please come back demonoid i miss you” thats just so dam lame

    grow up and live a bloody real life instead of a life where you look at a bloody screen all the time and think the world is over cause some torrent sites are going under..

    going out getting p*ssed and banging a bird after is far much better then sitting listening to all these site owners who think they can rule over bloody big people “roll my eyes”

    once a site gets big it will get shut down simple as that since there is only so much you can do before you reach a dead end and thats when the big boys come knocking on your door ;)

    In my opinion, “I’ve been in the scene since several years before general population ever heard of an MP3″ Piracy will never stop, I dont mean to brag but I DL every piece of media that sparks my interest, too many have the taste of free media of their lips and fact is, for every educated and trained codec technician attempting to generate a copy protection scheme, there is 500 people out here which may not only have more training and education, but are far smarter than anybody who does it for a living. To the leaders of the video industry> Learn from the music industry, you cannot win, all that money could go toward lowering the final retail cost of the material, if that where to happen, I would definitely purchase more DVD’s and HD content. It can be a PITA to do some of these trans-code’s I would rather buy a final product, but not at these prices and absolutely not with the reported final profit margins these production/manufacturing companies keep! I can just picture hundreds of mounties charging in to swoop down on those servers that provide us Americans so much pirated pleasure. LOL. Anyway, I love Demonoid and hope it’s back this time. As a matter of fact, I’m going to make it a point to actually donate to them if it gets running. Why can’t practice what they preach? Maybe they can’ get both of their faces to agree. Demonoid should look into moving to Nicaragua,Honduras,or El Salvador.
