    For those who yell “they will never stop online-piracy”, think about this: A legal letter to the provider, that’s all it takes!

    See how easy it becomes for “anti-piracy” (or “pro-grabbing-huge-amounts-of-money-from-the-industry-b*st*rds” as I like to call them) to take down torrent sites? This is just the beginning. The only good thing is that Demos (THE MAN behind Demonoid) won’t stop, but just tries again and again. I really like Demonoid. It’s a great place for quality torrents. I really hope they will be back soon.

    a legal letter is just a piece of paper, it doesnt really do anything to stop online piracy as a whole, sure they might get a website to go offline but there are thousands of other ways to get warez or movies. Do you really think just because they stop 1 website others are not going to popup ? Its a war they will NEVER win. They have been trying the same thing for years now and all its done is made people go underground.

    Demonoid will be back up sometime soon, maybe a day, maybe a week, maybe a couple of weeks, maybe a month, but it will be back up. They need to move the servers to Africa or South America, some place where they have more worries than people sharing files with each other. File sharing is just crippling the Canadian government. The country is in complete turmoil over this situation. It affects education, crime and poverty. YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DID WHAT THEY DID, CAN’T YOU??????

    FYI - before this happened, canucks, (at least the smart ones) could just connect to demonoid through a proxy and all was well(so long as it wasn’t a canadian based proxy =)

    As a Canadian , I was horribly upset when Demonoid blocked all Canadian traffic. Then , reading a post from Martin , I heard I could still connect through a proxy server. Used to think I was a somewhat smart Canadian , now Im not so sure ( lol ) . Anyhow , could anyone out there either explain to me or send me links on how to go about doing such a thing , it would be greatly appreciated , and if and when Demonoid is back up and I can access it , I will send invites to those in need of one that helped me with this topic.     I find a large portion of the little known Anime I watch on Demonoid as it’s hard to find the rarer titles elsewhere. I usually end up buying DVDs of the ones I decide I like. There are other sources, but it’s much easier on Demonoid, knowing that someone more often than not will be seeding. :/

    Man, why don’t the webmasters of “questionable content” such as BT just outright eliminate legal risk - host from Greece. Unless things have changed quite recently, there is absolutely NO COPYRIGHT LEGISLATION whatsoever in Greece. So even if you offered direct downloads of copyrighted works, who’s going to prosecute a legal activity? None of this “we’re technically legal” crap that doesn’t seem to matter in todays legal system, just cut out the legal system altogether by staying completely legal.

    Hmm…well this blows. CRIA can go ffck themselves…

    What I dont understand is why they would do this kind of thing TWICE! First they require restriction to Canadian users, now they shut the entire site down. What prevented them from trying this the first time, and why do they have the ability to do it now? Obviously, something has happened that we dont know about, maybe a new law passed or something…

    Anyway, I think the best move would be to mimic TPB. TPB has been the biggest p2p protector in existence…hmm…..Maybe TPB should host demonoid! They already have two of the most popular public torrent sites already, why not add a private site (not to mention the most popular private site)?

    If something isnt done, Im going to be upset. After all, I love demonoid!

    I’m sure torrent sites are prepared for these kinds of bumps in the road and are enacting “plan b”. Ultimately, sites like Demonoid are going to have to get with the program and invest in private/self-perpetuated ISPs. If a letter to the provider can shut down something as big as Demonoid they’ve gotta be thinking about ways to avoid this in the future.

    Jesus no - don’t let TPB anywhere near Demonoid. That’s the single BEST thing about Demonoid - they’re NOT run by TPB. Not that there’s anything wrong with TPB - but do we really need another dump site with ZERO organization and no expectations that what you’re downloading will be safe or accurate. TPB is good because everything under the sun shows up there. Demonoid is good for exactly the opposite reason - you don’t have to wade through a ton of crap before you find what you’re looking for.

    Not to mention the Demonoid community is just awesome. Public trackers completely lack this sense of community. It’s a shame that people will only act like decent people when they’re being forced to do so.

    This really only occurred to me this very minute - what right does the CRIA have stirring up trouble for Demonoid or anyone else for that matter?! Thanks to the levy imposed on blank recording media “pirating” music in Canada is a COMPLETELY LEGALLY PROTECTED activity. I could understand if it was the CMPDA (Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Assoc) as the laws cover music ONLY, leaving movies, software, etc still protected by copyright. So by the CRIA’s own insistence, copying music is ENTIRELY LEGAL in Canada. In other words any legal “threats” that Demonoid has received from the CRIA are not valid, are not enforceable, and could very well constitute harassment. If I was running Demonoid I’d fight the action and couter-sue for harassment and legal expenses.

    We always could. Demonoid’s method of screening out Canadians was none-too-thorough. A simple transparent proxy residing outside of Canada is all it took. It didn’t even have to be an anonymizing proxy.

    Do your homework numbnutz - we enjoy plenty of freedoms. Many are not shared by many of our so-called industrialized nations. For example, you can’t be thrown in jail here just for saying “gee, I wish the Prime Minister was dead”. Try that in many other countries (including America) and see what happens!
    Name me just one freedom that’s common in other countries that we do not have in Canada.

    Just to let you know, this has happened a few times, and I have been with demonoid since it started, chances are this is less than a one month move, and personally they are very good at starting back up and never seem to lose a file, or atleast on their sites, so just wait time can only tell, we all love demonoid, so it will repay us with enough support.

    ISP’s are in the worst way in this whole digital millennium crapola. If they comply and obey, the public roasts them alive. If they refuse and deny requests to name names, then THEY are being held accountable for the actions in question - that’s the way the laws are starting to swing in many countries. I feel for the ISP’s - I truly do.

    That being said, tho, I’d swear a mortal enemy of any ISP that would cough up ANY info about me to ANYBODY for ANY reason (besides the info that it transmitted as an integral part of the whole TCP/IP mishmash for the nerds and retentives out there). It’s just really crappy that they are being put in the position to have to do so more and more these days. It’s a HUGH scare tactic that’s been working like a charm for RIAA, and will serve many other xIA’s very well in the future. It’s the laws that need to be addressed in all fairness, not the ISPs (with the notable exception of AOL - they need to be addressed to a deserted island and sent postage due with no return address).

    Since the Supreme Court of Canada already threw out the case against Canadian Citizens downloading in Canada, I doubt they have any legal authority. Since the Supreme Court sets precedence, I would look at this as a harrassment suit, and suggest the wonderful people at Demonoid file a suit againt them. Legally they are doing nothing wrong, they are not selling and therefore are not criminals.

    Seems the tracker may be offline now as well. Have a couple demonoid torrents active and none have been able to scrape for a while now - connection being actively refused. Hopefully some solution is found.

    You kinda picked a moot point there bud.

    First of all, we have a socialized health care system - think NHS in Britan - so any lifesaving care and the majority of hospital procedures are paid for by your citizenship (it’s managed at a provincial level financially, but the majority of the rules of the system are federal making the same system available across the country).

    And secondly, for the stuff that’s not provided for by the federal system (ie free) like prescription drugs, elective procedures, etc we DO in fact have personal health insurance. There’s several insurers that sell private plans for $x.xx/month similar to the US approach but not as sweeping in scope. But there are many insurers that sell through Employers’ benefit systems. At least a basic level of health insurance coverage can be expected for little or no cost in this Country just by having a full time job. Most employers offer tiered levels of these benefits by co-pay with the employer typically paying at least 50% of the premium of the selected plan.

    If there’s only one thing I was allowed to be proud of it’s our health care system. It has its faults, for sure, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I just hope we can keep the American uber-corporate influences the hell OUT of our hospitals.

    And before someone craps the taxes BS out there pie holes, NO WE ARE NOT TAXED TO DEATH. The taxes we pay are perfectly reasonable - especially when you consider what we get back in services for our tax dollar. Right now, my tax bracket leaves my paycheck about 20% lighter. That’s all gov’t deductions included - federal tax, provincial tax, employment insurance and “old age” pension premiums. And I get about 4% back through mandatory vacation pay that my employer is responsible for. Not a bad system. Not perfect, but FAR from bad.

All I can say to that is: No we can’t, and shame on you for even contemplating the morality of doing such a thing. That’s the very thing that makes me so much want to vomit when I think about the way some countries run their health care. Why would you tolerate, let alone want to, live in such a system?!
