Dell launches Blu-Ray notebook for sub-$1000
Dell this week introduced a notebook with a Blu-ray disc player for less than $1,000, and has dropped the price of some of its high-end XPS models by $699. Dell is offering its Blu-ray Inspiron 1525 for $879 at a time when consumers are expected to embrace high-definition DVDs, now that Sony-backed Blu-ray has won the format battle with Toshiba-backed HD DVD. Movie studios and consumer electronics retailers recently dropped support for HD DVD. With consumers no longer having to choose between the two competing formats, Dell apparently wants to jump-start interest around the winner with the Inspiron 1525, which has a 15.4-inch display and an HDMI port for connecting to high-definition displays and HDTVs.

The Inspiron player can burn files, such as digital photos and videos, to a Blu-ray disc, as well as play and burn traditional DVDs and CDs, Dell said. A Blu-ray disc can hold as much as 50 GB of data versus 8.5 GB on a standard DVD. The top-of-the-line Inspiron includes a 1.83-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, Windows Vista Home Premium, 3 GB of memory, and a 320-GB hard drive. Dell introduced the Blu-ray Inspiron on Thursday and cut prices by $699 on Friday on select XPS notebooks. Dell is offering the XPS M1330 and M1530 for a starting price of $1,029 and $999, respectively. The basic M1330 and M1530 come with a 1.66-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 processor, Vista Home Premium, 1 GB of memory, and a 120-GB hard drive.

What gfx card ? I think Dell is one of the best laptop maker. I like their Laptops design and power ^^
quote.”The Inspiron player can burn files, such as digital photos and videos” WHAT A REVOLUTION!!!!
@#8, the key point is the continuation of that sentence “… to a Blu-Ray disc”. That’s pretty good at that price point.
Dell is the Best
i Alwys Buy The new LapTops and the get better and better pPl
SPOOOON!!! Now when an affordable blu-ray bunner hits the shelf along with affordable blank media, i will be all over that.
great, hopefully the blank discs will cost below 20 bucks a piece…..
I went to dells site in canada, and started to customize one that had a bd drive, the one that is included is only a Bluray ROM drive, no burning!!!–> Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) [Included in Price]
or for $200, you can add –>
Blu-ray Disc Drive 2X (BD/DVD/CD burner w/double layer BD write capability) [add $200 or $5/month1]
it would probably be cheaper in the usa
@3&6 so who is the best laptop maker then?
I nearly always buy Dell machines. I have multiple laptops and desktops from them. Yes, sometimes things do go wrong but they are always very supportive when resolving the issue.
Very nice price point for a BluRay ROM and 200 dollars for the burner isn’t bad either. Overall I’ve tried a lot of laptops and Dell’s have always lasted the longest with the fewest issues (if your not going to build one your self). Plus now they are cutting price to be more competitive with the cheap brands. But I must say I’d like to take that MAC Book Air out for a night on the town… it’s seksi!
@14: Alienware? Or the company that makes them for Navy Seals…..lol
@17: Alienware is owned by Dell…
@18: Uhhhhhh…dam that just shattered my dream
For the 1000- price it is very versatile item to have espetially for someone who won`t be playing lots of HD content.
I just wonder if it is possible to upgrade my Dell XPS lap to utilize BluRay tech? IMHO, Dell makes really nice laptops. Never had any serious troubles with any of them, unlike other brands. The only thing that surpasses my Dell laps is ‘95 Toshiba Satellite, which still works like a charm and up to this day gave me completely no trouble at all.
Burn to BluRay? Maybe when they make affordable media and/or re-writable BluRays but not until then.
@14,17,19… Try a Sager notebook.
I dont know why u lot like Dell, in the UK they the worst pc/laptop you can buy end off full stop.
HP’s Voodoo is better than Dell’s Alienware, for good gaming notebooks.
^^^ but they’re all a bit overpriced for the same thing you can get elsewhere.
Read the Clevo Guide for more resellers that are not as overpriced (for the same notebooks) as Alienware

I’ll by a blur-ray player in a year or two when the price drops down to 50 bucks even.
@27 by that time, HD movies will have gone digital and Blu-ray will be used only for physical backups.
Is it upgradable like the PS3 player?
Anyone have any Dell coupon codes?
