Dell’s much-awaited entry into the netbook market has finally happened as buyers in U.S., Japan and a few other European countries can now purchase the Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (a.k.a Inspiron 910). Available in both Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows XP flavor, the 2.2 lbs Inspiron Mini 9 is powered by Intel’s N270 1.6GHz Atom CPU, GMA 950 Graphics and 8.9″ glossy LED-backlit LCD (1024×600). Primary storage is handled by 4/8/16 GB solid state drives whereas the battery is a 4-cell 32Whr one.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbooks

Dell rarely disappoints when it comes to accessories and the Inspiron Mini 9 is no exception. There’s a whole new line of custom “Designed for Dell” backpacks, messenger bags, convertible cases from brands like Timbuk2 and others for their first netbook. Dell has priced the Inspiron Mini 9 with Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP starting at $349 & $399 respectively. Alpine White version is always an $25 upgrade. Windows XP pre-loaded units are shipping immediately whereas the Ubuntu 8.04 Mini 9 featuring customized interface would be available after a couple of weeks.

    so this can’t be upgraded past 1GB? that sucks considering the graphics card shares the memory…

    still wouldn’t mind having one but wish it supported 2gb

    LoL

    If your into modding your stuff get the MSI Wind. I have one and triple boot Linux, OSX and XP.

    Mine has non solid stat HDD but its upgraded to 250GB so its a tad bit more practical. Weighs in at around 1.1kg with my 6 cell battery. Plus the MSI wind has 10″ screen same Atom CPU and mine has the 1.5GB Ram upgrade + over clocked to 2Ghz.

    All that said the Dell does look neat!

    Still I’d go the MSI Wind any day..

    Nice post, Netbooks kick ass

    Another toy. So is this considered an upgrade from a cell phone? Some people still prefer to use real computers.

    Now can anyone tell me what the point of this is. The only thing i can think of is using it to surf the internet and check mail.
    I guess there are people out there that only need a computer to do that. For me it is completely useless. I will stick with my comp.

    specs:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz CPU
    GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
    SAMSUNG High-gloss Black 21.6″ 5ms (2ms GTG) Widescreen (1680×1050)
    4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
    4 x USB 2.0, 1 x IEEE 1394a, 2 x eSATA 3Gb/s

    compared to:

    Intel’s N270 1.6GHz Atom CPU
    GMA 950 Graphics
    8.9″ glossy LED-backlit LCD (1024×600)
    up to 1GB DDR2 533MHz RAM
    optional Bluetooth 2.1;
    802.11g WiFi,
    trio of USB 2.0 ports

    It’s a netbook, a ultra portable computer you can take with you everywhere. You can’t compare it to a normal pc, not even a normal laptop, it’s not meant to compete with pc’s or normal laptops.

    It sucks that only the cheapest model is available with Ubuntu. If you would like to have better specs you have to buy Windows XP with it.

    Actually you can choose the cheap linux model and add extra ram and hdd. It will be at the same price, as the windows models, but will come with Linux installed.

    @8

    lol, no one cares about your specs. stop stroking your e-peen.

    it’s obviously a niche computer. that’s why it’s called a ‘netbook.’ it’s for people only looking for basics and don’t want to spend for a full blown laptop.

    sorry dudes or dudettes about my previous post. i didnt mean to brag. I was just showing how usesless this would be for me.

    I see now that its purpose is to surf the internet. i should have noticed by the title “netbook”
