Dell introduced green dekstop: Studio Hybrid

With its ovoid-cylindrical design, the Dell Studio Hybrid is a new twist on the small-form-factor PC. Its size, though, is reminiscent of others in that space, including the Apple Mac mini, and HP’s Slimline PCs like the s3330f. The Dell Studio Hybrid costs $874 direct, and $1,064 with a 19-inch widescreen monitor. It’s an energy-efficient and environment-friendly design (hence the “hybrid” moniker), but thanks to its Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Penryn-based processor, it can keep up not only with the other systems in the compact space but with larger tower-based PCs as well.

It does suffer from weak 3D performance due to the system’s integrated graphics, but if you don’t need to play 3D games, the Studio Hybrid is a good alternative to the boxy mainstream PCs that have dominated the market since the dawn of personal computing. Specs include the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 Gbytes of RAM, a 250-Gbyte hard drive, with an integrated Intel Mobile 965 Express. A definite plus is the exclusion of most types of “crapware,”, or the myriad little trial programs and applications that can slow down a system. The system’s low power also earns it the PC Magazine “GreenTech Approved” label, consistent with Dell’s May pledge to trim the power of its notebooks and desktops by 25 percent.

Those computers look like they could fall over pretty easily and break. I used to have a Dell pc and a laptop, but they both overheated to a ridiculous extent and eventually broke because of all kinds of hardware problems. It is best to build your own pc or at least pick all the individual parts of it yourself.

Ok another “miracle” product, I mean cmon 800 bucks for PC? even if its as green as grass ppl dont give a sh!t about it…No normal person cares too much about “green” things if it has cash savings involved. Althou it had to be paid more attention, you know – global warming stuff etcetc…But with these kind of prices you will only scare ppl off, if you know what I mean :)

A desperate attempt to copy the MAC’s slick design. Rather than make a copy cat how about innovate something useful. There is a difference between innovation and modification and Dell still does not grasp that.

I played COD4 on one of these at a demo stand at the electronics expo and it ran on low/med settings. so stop bashing integrated graphics they get the job done and ill be getting one of these after seeing how good it played and how it helps the environment in this age of global warming. funny how you losers bash something when its “green” do you enjoy destroying your environment dipsh!ts?

    July 29th, 2008 | 21:07

i like the wooden design – its cool for people like me who own a gaming pc and a desktop replacement laptop(surf station) for space/energy saver reasons. i guess no one really wants to play games with these ones.

    July 29th, 2008 | 22:25

Man, what is this ‘Less is more’ trend that is hitting the PC market? Those crappy little notebooks and powerless systems like this one, what people (except people who don’t know jack about computers) would buy this? Design sure is nice, but lets face it THE SPECS SUCK!!!

Just give me a nice higtower which I can fill with harddisks, a whopping videocard (or 2, or even 4!) and lot’s of other neat stuff that actually improves perfomance.

And integrated graphics do suck. Now if they would implement state of the art graphic chips (Nvidia 9xxx series for example) it would be a good alternative. But usually it’s just something from the lousy 6xxx generation. And that is sooooo 2006!

i’m with green rules, to save the planet is cool. guess what there are people that don’t need top of the art gfx but need a top of the art tower and energy saving equipment.

for all those people that cry mac mini, take a look at the mini again and tell me why this tower should be a design copy, if it is only for the size… apple took that idea from barebone who manufacture mini tower pcs for ages now.

    July 29th, 2008 | 23:11

$1k+ for that? Overpriced and underpowered. You can build a faster PC for $400, or one with 6-8 times the processing capacity for the same $1k+ price.

Besides looking like it would tip over easily (as sleazy joe mentioned), the rounded top means that you can’t put anything on top of them. I have one of my speakers as well as some other stuff on top of mine.

Unless you order an extra stand and put it on top…

looks like this thing looks more like a toy box for little kids, when I looked at it at first, I thought I could just tap on the front thing so that it would fall out from the back (probably that’s not the case, but hey, it’s Dell, it’s always crap that falls apart when you look at it. LOL). Seriously, in my eyes this is a plastic toy or something :P

Compare it to the new desktop Mac, it looks steady as hell, and not at all like a plastic toy. I would know, I’m using one right now! :P
Software is steady, I don’t have any problems with running Leopard or did I have with Tiger or any other like Jaguar, etc. It’s stylish, and it works perfect, not for n00bs, Mac is for people who actually can think logically!
Windows is for n00bs, who STILL can’t think logically!

And Mac is actually a money saver, once you got one you can use it for years. A Dell falls apart every so often (so it makes you buy a new one after you had this for like 6 months?maybe?) and you need to fix those virusses all the time… doesn’t that get annoying? Time is money, right?

    Ok, done ranting :P

“Green is right” if you’re quite done hurling insults around to compensate for your own feelings of inadequacy and general worthless existance – you’ll notice people, including me, pointed out the obvious. $1k for the specs they are offering is a RIP OFF. You can get a FAR more capable computer for half that price. This is a bad deal end of story.

Oh and I doubt there’s anything special about this computer. It probably has an efficient power supply and that’s it. You can buy 80%+ efficient PSUs seperately if you so wish.

You’re just being fooled into paying a lot more for a lot less hardware, in the disguise of saving the planet. In short you’re being conned.

But don’t let that stop you spending $1,000 in order to protect your self righteous ego while the rest of us laugh at how you just burned your money and Dell just profiteered at your gullibility.

lol at all the idiots who think “it must be true, penn and teller said so”.

LOL at the idiots who will pay $1000 for this.

LOL at the idiots who think wood = not green. You think plastic is green? just what the world needs; more petrochemicals. Cutting down trees isn’t the best idea in the world but certainly better than polluting the world with more petrochems.

LOL at the idiots who think that 99% of the population need any higher spec than offered by this PC – nerds with their 2-4 graphics cards are a very small (and very BO smelling) minority of PC users.

Idiots who think they are too “PC literate”/poweruser to use something like this are the best!

I specd and priced several options before deciding to purchase this pc. I live off-grid for 10 years now and POWER MATTERS. The specs compare very well with laptops that cost 50 to 100% more and it uses much less power. It is very quite, uses very little desk space and looks good. it is on a sturdy stand, no it does not fall over. I am no moron, have been programming before most of you were born (since 1972). I have used many different systems, laptops, Apples and still do. I think it’s a good deal unless you have time to waste on moronic games and money to waste on power hungry video cards and don’t give a dam about environmental issues.
May you suffer lots of power failures.
