I am Russian and I fu.cking hated both movies “Night watch” and “Day watch”. Before the movie was released the producing company made a big advert campaign and promised some “neverseenbefore special effects”, omg! what a letdown this movie was. I’d only recommend this to a hardcore Sci-fi fan. Other people might just as well pass it, and I only watched it coz I hoped it would be better than 1st part, god I was misled :)

I still need to see Night Watch again, the first time I saw it I was confused trying to keep up with the subtitles and what was happening.

Loved the first one of these, but loved this one even more. A dvd rip of this has been out for a few month now btw!

This film is based on a Trilogy of books, and each book is based on 1 character and contains 3 stories. Nightwatch the 1st book, was based on Anton. Daywatch the film, was not actually Daywatch the 2nd book at all, it was a combiniation of the 2nd and 3rd story from the first book ‘Nightwatch’.

The child in this Daywatch film is NOT actually Anton’s son in the book, and the chalk of destiny is not picked up by Anton. Basicaly the 3rd story in the 1st book is about the blonde girl with the specs (Svetlana) also it’s all meant to take place at the top of a building NOT a party.

So this film is not actually correct. There are many faults in this film really, but that’s generally what happens with book to films adaptations.

Source of above = My Girlfriend whos read all 3 books.

Still, bloody GREAT film, one of the best of the year for me. It combines so many different genres, it’s visuals were on par with 300/LOTR for me, but much darker and dare I say believable as it’s set in recent times. This film has smashed all Russian box office figures, beating even LOTR. Not to forget the acting was equally as good as the visuals!

Good entertainment. I actually preferred watching this at home than at the cinema.

never heard of the films before and d/l’d Night Watch before getting this one. would definitely recommend both films, but don’t bother with this one yet if you haven’t seen the Night Watch first – this won’t make a bit of sense to you.

the films are kind of hard to follow but they are both most definitely worth it in the end.

western films generally dealing with this kind of material can’t seem to avoid religiosity and end up seeping with Judæo-Christian ideology.

these movies tell a really good story without all the same old tired themes, symbolism or endoctrination of western films.

the acting is incredible and aren’t undermined by the effects. they really come together quite naturally with only a few over-the-top scenes.

Awesome film. Watched it subbed a couple of months ago.
I really love it and i loved the “Night Watch”.
Maybe because It doesn’t have this Hollywoodish style which bore me to death.
Good sci-fi story also. A little confusing at the beggining but completely swallows you in with time. Classic “Good vs.Evil” Where Good can be evil and Evil can be good.
Good acting. And Janna Friske is… ummm… Goddess :)
    Definitely a keeper for me.

I am Russian as well and these movies sucked… for a russian movie. It was pretty much designed to be an American style action sci-fi with some religious elements. It’s something many countries’ Film industries are doing to increase their sales; traditional movies of those countries are poorly conveyed to mainstream foreign audiences so they go by the dominant existing model. Remember “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?” It was the most typical Chinese movie to the point of being a parody of one, but it won
an oscar for actively attempting hollywood penetration. I don’t want to inadvertently trigger an american movies are sux/american movies rulez yo! discussion. It is sufficed to say that the traditional Russian movies (especially from the surrealist school) can show you exactly how different cinema can be and still remain amazing. My 2 favourites are “Window to Paris” and Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” (NO, not the 2004 one with George facking Clooney!)
    peace.

    @21: What a load of b0ll0cks.

I’m austalian, don’t know a word of Russian and LOVED both these highly original movies.

It just takes an original approach to appreciate them. They kick a** over anything coming from Hollywood. Anyone interested in quality sci-fi/fantasy or just smart movies in general must give this and its predecessor a try.

I bought Night Watch on DVD. And by the way, Day Watch has been on torrent for MONTHS! I downloaded this months ago, why it’s taken so long to get on RLSLOG is beyond me, I actually emailed these guys months about it to recommend it, but noooo it had to be “scene” first.

Also, if the provided subs don’t work well for you, there are variations at subscene. Some subs I found didn’t have good translations.

Do not let this movie pass you by, at least give it a go! But see Night Watch first! This is the sequel and requires some idea of what is going on to appreciate it fully. I can’t recommend these movies highly enough.

Great both films – interesting and different style of special effects – the film surprised everybody in the depth and unusual techniques and showed most of Hollywood up.

Hence the director in the process of making the comic book WANTED by Mark Miller with James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie.

If these 2 films are anything to go by even tho the adaptation will not be accurate like the books it should still be fun.

Im not a stickler for subs but its alwasy nice to have a choice depending on the mood – no point in being anal about subs if the dub enriches some people dont like to read.

The director might even make a bit more money….or do people think everyone works for free or arts sake?
Not for everyone but if your like to think when watching a SF movie then give it a try.

    October 27th, 2007 | 22:16

The dub on the original Nightwatch was actually very good. So much so that I actually found myself flitting back and forth between sub and dub for the first 15 minutes of the movie on DVD before finally settling on the subs.

Its like the UK release of Initial D with two completely different musical soundtracks to choose from!

If they’ve canned the 3rd movie for some reason, it’s a pity because you do NOT normally get such story quality from sequels. At least not from hollywood anyway. I was really looking forward to news of the 3rd installation…

I first heard about this movie on tv labeled as “the russian matrix”. It has some effects indeed but far away from the artificial, effect loaded matrix trilogy. I think too that its too american, one of the goals may be the international market. They tried to reach the most people with dubbing the film so that the most stupid perople who cant read will watch it…(by the way what is the problem with dubbing? you can still switch to the original language(+subs), dont you?
I saw both films, they are good, not as revolutionary as matrix but still nice movies with a slightly new (russian?) style for the americanized film watchers.

If this one follows the same pattern as Night Watch, y’all would be much better off getting the Russian release, which has been out for eons. The international version of Night Watch had quite a lot cut from the Russian version, while much of what was cut is nonsensical, at least to non-Russians, it was no more so than much of the rest of the movie and some of what was cut explained a few things. Not, mind you, that much is ever explained at all.

My husband loves both Night Watch and Day Watch, so, sadly, I’ve seen both literally dozens of times. Frankly I don’t get what the big deal is. The basic story is pedestrian at absolute best and has been done a thousand times, most often far better. The storytelling itself comes in fits and jerks and is full of plot holes the size of small stars and more unexplained ‘convenient’ events than you can shake a Russian cigarette at. The much-lauded special effects are adequate, but nothing more — certainly no new ground gets broken here. You’ve seen all this stuff before a hundred times, and probably done a lot better. The acting is likewise adequate. These may or may not be great actors, it’s hard to tell as the material never really gives them anything to do save fill cardboard roles and look solemn and depressed a lot. The one bright spot is the cinematography, which is, I must admit, absolutely stunning. Whether or not that alone is sufficient to save a pair of films that are otherwise a mess (this one more so than the its predecessor), I couldn’t say, but at least these films have that much going for them — that’s a lot more than these kinds of films usually have.
