Dark City 1998 INTERNAL DVDRip XviD-KiNESiS

Staff Pick

First there was darkness…, then came… the strangers.

Hello everyone! First of all, I want to say that these news are dedicated to a special friend I have made. Thank you, I really enjoy the time with you :) Now on with my post!

As u can see nothing good seems to come out of the scene, so I thought myself I might delight you guys with a Staff-Pick to pass some time. The sentence written in bold on top is the first line you hear, when you watch that movie. In front of you a pitch black sky with an ocean of stars reveals itself. Welcome to the Dark City!

I have chosen this movie, because I was always fascinated by the attempt to capture the word “infinity” into graphical elements and the creators of Dark City have done a damn good job. By creating the never ending, always changing city you empathize quiet a lot with John, the main actor, who on his attempt to flee the city is never able to find rest. The same counts for you, this movie has one of the shortest average shot lengths (ASL) of any modern narrative production at 1.8 seconds. There is a cut almost every 2 seconds. This means you never get to analyze a scene properly, because the picture always changes and except that, there is almost total darkness everywhere anyway…

Thank you, dear reader for reading this and have a lot of fun with Dark City

Synopsis: Upon awakening with a start in an icy bathtub in a strange room–with a woman’s dead body inconveniently nearby–John Murdoch can’t remember how he got there. With a police detective hot on his trail and a psychiatrist skulking around, Murdoch discovers that the key to his mystery is the presence of strange extraterrestrial creatures, the Strangers, who are experimenting with the memories of the humans in his city–from which there may be no escape. Ambitious sci-fi noir, with rich production design and a dense, Kafkaesque concept.

    Amazing movie. It put my girlfriend to sleep the last time I played the dvd, but other than Battlestar Galactica her attention span wanes with any sci-fi show/movie we watch anyway.

    I saw this when it was released to dvd. Didn’t know what to expect and was really surprised by how good it was. sci-fi mystery noir all the way, and unexpectedly high production values for effects.

    it’s the inspiration for matrix… one of the best scifi flicks ever made

  19. nick
    April 8th, 2008 | 02:39

    it wasn’t an inspiration for the matrix, it came out the same year and was dwarfed by the matrix. the matrix is good, but dark city is great. one of the best sci-fi films ever, indeed.

    April 8th, 2008 | 02:42

    also, if you enjoyed dark city, rent/buy it and watch with roger ebert’s commentary. he gives a ton of detail and context to everything, and declares it as a pinnacle of sci-fi cinema.

    ———————————————————

    Agreed…..best Sci-Fi movie ever? Thats just disrespectful to movies like Soilent Green, Alien (1979), Metropolis (1927), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Blade Runner (1982), Donnie Darko (2001), The Thing (1982), all of which were just as good or even better than Dark City in thier own ways. Don’t misunderstand me….DC is a good movie…but you guys are really over hyping it.

    @nick

    Matrix was released one year after dark city…of course the Wachowski brothers got inspired by the story that. quote ” Director Alex Proyas first wrote the story of Dark City in 1990 as a detective story. The protagonist was a detective investigating a case that did not make logical sense, driving him insane as the evidence pointed to a larger, incomprehensible scheme. The detective was originally in pursuit of Murdoch, but Proyas considered the detective’s perspective too analytical and changed it to the perspective of the man being chased to take a more emotive point of view. The original plot was changed to the story of Eddie Walenski in the film, played by Colin Friels. Proyas was also inspired by science fiction stories of simulated reality that he read during his childhood. The director considered the result to be a Raymond Chandler story with a science fiction twist.[5]

    The initial ending for Dark City was originally bleak, with the Strangers claiming victory. Proyas, not liking the ending, decided to alter it to focus on the “individual’s triumph” in an environment where individuality was being suppressed ”

    A true classic…just like The Matrix. Two of my favorite ever.

    There are many other reasons why Martix (1999) is so similar to Dark City (1998) (besides the plot):

    Both films were filmed in Fox Studios in Sidney.

    Sets from Dark City, including rooftops, buildings and others exteriors, were reused when filming The Matrix.

    Visual effects for both films were made by the same company (DFILM Services).

    Soilent Green , 2001: A Space Odyssey , Blade Runner (1982) those were grear sci-fi movies….oh and Metropolis (1927) cause of the design and the artistic feeling of that film..to bad Fritz Lang is dead,i would definitely kiss him!!!
    so…Dark city..ok movie (its my opinion)…the end of that movie is bad…

    Hehe, I own this on DVD. Love this movie! :D

    @13 No, you´re wrong, the Matrix came out in 1999, this came out in 1998. Also, “The Matrix” was already well into pre-production/shooting by the time this was released, so I wouldn´t call it an “inspiration for the Matrix”. The end of the century saw a lot of these “alternative reality” movies. If you liked this one, you may wanna check out:

    - ExistenZ (Cronenberg)
    - The 13th Floor (don´t really like it as much as the others, but its OK)
    - Fight Club (my favourite movie of all time)

    ENJOY! :D

    It was rumored a few months back that one of my favorite films of all time, DARK CITY, would be getting re-released with brand new special FX work added. No other details were revealed and it has been silent since then - until now. The other day I chatted with writer David Goyer, who is off in Chicago directing THE UNBORN for Rogue Pictures, who revealed a few more details on the project that any hardcore fan will appreciate. Read on for the skinny.

    While on the set of his upcoming film UNBORN, writer-director David Goyer updated us on the re-release of DARK CITY, which he wrote for Alex Proyas to direct. “It’s coming out fairly soon [and will] probably have limited theatrical, but Im not sure,” he explains, “I have seen almost all of it and I took part in an over hour long making-of.”

    In addition to the special features, Goyer reveals that there’s more to the re-release than just special FX upgrades. “[They re-did] the score and the cuts a little longer,” he reveals, “all of the parties involved did fairly lenghtly interviews with us, they’ll be incluced on there.”

    He’s also quite sure that there will be a Blu-ray release. Join me in a lengthy scream of happiness. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

    Released in 1998, Alex Proyas, (The Crow) directs this futuristic thriller about a man waking up to find he is wanted for brutal murders he doesn’t remember. Haunted by mysterious beings who stop time and alter reality, he seeks to unravel the riddle of his identity. William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelley all star, even Melissa George makes a cameo!

    The 720p release is

    Dark.City.720p.HDTV.x264.AC3.5.1.Eng-SM.mkv

    But there’s only 6 seeds on my private tracker so it won’t be surfacing on public trackers for a long time, if at all.

    I’d download and seed it publicly but I’ve tried that before with BSG and Firefly and nobody seeded so the torrents died.

    Turns out my (I think it’s mine) BSG torrent didn’t die. I might consider getting the 720p Dark City torrent if there’s enough demand.

    Great movie, horrible release. I know it’s INTERNAL, but this thing even uses xvid-QPEL which breaks compatibility with the vast majority of standalone players. And it still doesn’t achieve adequate video or sound quality.
    I’m really looking forward to a high quality and compatible 2CD release since this movie deserves better.

    @72 chaddles,

    Glad you liked it. BTW, if you want to download it, or any other YouTube video, just go to;

    http://keepvid.com/

    Put in the URL for the YouTube page (or Daily Motion, Ifilm, etc), then click the link that comes up. Rename the file after downloading. It will be in FLV format. Play with VLC, dedicated FLV player, etc.
