Dark City 1998 Directors Cut DVDRiP XViD-NODLABS

NODLABS has pre’d DVDRip of the “Dark City” SciFi movie dated back from 1998. Personally, i haven’t seen it yet (wonder how i passed it  ), so i don’t know what’s the difference between “normal” (theatrical) and this DC version. But according to good ratings and reviews seems to be interesting so i’ll put it into my “must to see list”. :-)

Plot: John Murdoch awakens alone in a strange hotel to find that he has lost his memory and is wanted for a series of brutal and bizarre murders. While trying to piece together his past, he stumbles upon a fiendish underworld controlled by a group of beings known as The Strangers who possess the ability to put people to sleep and alter the city and its inhabitants. Now Murdoch must find a way to stop them before they take control of his mind and destroy him.

Strangely I wasn’t impressed with this when it released in 1998. Now though after having rewatched it many years later I see that it was quite impressive for the time. It is a good movie.

    As IMDB writes:
    Runtime: 100 min | 111 min (director’s cut)

this version should add another 11 minutes.

Excellent movie….Blew me away when I first saw it. Also it was one of my first DVD formatted movies….I had to pay £600.00 to import a region free player from the USA to the UK. The same spec’ DVD can bought in Asda for under £15.00!!! lol. My first DVD film was….Flubber….WTF!?! lol

This is the #1 film where I’m totally out-of-whack with the rest of the world… I thought it was cr*p! I’d give it a 5 at best. weird huh! I watched it when I was 11 and hated it. I watched it again in my late 20’s to see if I was just too young, and still hated it. Boring, UNatmospheric, UNartistic, and did I mention it is boring too? I just can’t understand the film’s praise. So… there’s my $0.02. Anyone scared of mentioning how cr*p the movie is now has an ally. :D (won’t bother downloading this one, but appreciate the post).

recommend turning sound off until you see keifer sutherland’s pocket watch

  29. Protektor
    July 18th, 2008 | 19:50

This was an amazing movie when it came out. Way ahead of it’s time. Before people had even heard of the Matrix being made or what it was even suppose to be about. The ideas and concepts in the movie are amazing. Too bad the original DVD was pretty much a no frills release. It was originally released in a paper lock-tight case that New Line Cinema used to be fond of back then.

I am annoyed in one respect that it seems like the movie companies are always releasing 3-4 different versions of the same movie in hopes that you will buy it again. I bought this when it first came out on DVD. I’m glad I bought it but I will wait to see what all is on the new version to see if it is worth buying again.

    July 18th, 2008 | 19:51

ok, i put the question another way.

is those 11 minutes worth watching? I saw the theatre version, not the DC. But if it’s basically the same, i won’t DL the DC.

    So, any answers, please?

  31. Metube
    July 18th, 2008 | 19:52

I’m betting the voiceover won’t be in this. The director was made to put it in by the studio and as this is the Director’s Cut…

“I watched it when I was 11 and hated it. I watched it again in my late 20’s to see if I was just too young, and still hated it.”

Since the movie came about 10 years ago, you must have been involved in some kind of time warp to see it at both 11 and during your late 20’s.

The Matrix was cool in the way in the way the concept of reality was revealed. I was completely blown away when Neo went through the rabbit hole. I totally wasn’t expecting it even after seeing the trailers. I came out of the cinema thinking that mebbe I could fly if I concentrated real hard.

When I watched Dark City I didn’t get the same “awe” as I did from The Matrix or Bladerunner and I usually really, really, really, love cyberpunk stuff. Mebbe it was the lack of good action, or just me not taking a liking to Rugus Sewell. But I think mainly I just found the world and story uninteresting. Mebbe the Director’s Cut adds the missing element like Leon The Professional was improved with more of the drama scenes.

But I will wait for some of your reviews. They’ve been playing it on Foxtel anyway.

Director’s cut? I’ll take whatever they add… love this movie. I hope they didn’t add 10 mn of Sutherland, he’s the weak link of the movie… the asthmatic breathing is so over the top, it’s pathetic. The movie is still worth watching over and over though… scifi at its best.

The flashback scenes to the house burning down at Shell Beach, that is my fire brigade you see around the burning house.
We burnt the prop house for the movie.
It was filmed in Sydney, Australia, and it is a VERY good film.

“maybe the guy didnt see it when it actually came out he doesnt say he does and therefor could have seen it when he was 11 and then agen in his late 20s so stop trying to make yourselves out as smarter than him”

How is that even possible if the movie came out 10 years go. At the most, he’d have to see it the EXACT year it came out to be 21, now. 11+10=21. You see how that works? Now, if he waited 3 years to see the movie when he was 11, the equation would be 11+10-3=18. 11 was his age, it came out 10 years ago, and he waited 3 years to see it, closing the gap to just 7 years ago, and not the maximum of 10. So, defending his remark about his age was pretty futile. Being that it’s just 3rd grade math, there.

This is an interesting movie… not for everyone. Some of the sci-fi ideas in it were unique at the time and may have been done better since… but you’ll enjoy it if you remember it is 10 years old.

Today, when i see again Dark City, the concept/scenario still is impressive. Even the soundtrack is better !

i think the movie isn’t about wrapping reality or the strangers, rather its about love and how people connect with each other… about how character still shows even if given a different life and a different path…

overall its still my #1 movie till date… the ending is really sweet, unlike matrix… matrix #3 should just be forgotten altogether…

    July 19th, 2008 | 10:35

What is the biggest difference between it and the original?

ALEX PROYAS: The general pace of the movie is quite different. The director’s cut more or less is the version I had originally sent out when I was first testing the movie. We had problems in testing and it’s why the studio had us add in the voice overs, which I thought was rubbish really! My instinct then was when something wasn’t playing right to speed it up and I’ve never been happy with that, so this version is back to a more leisurely and thoughtful pace it was meant to be. The voice over from the beginning is gone of course. There is also a few scenes added back that were ditched that I think are perfectly good scenes and I have no idea why we dropped them then.

I’m really happy with it! You’re allowed into the world more and you have more time with its characters. Literally almost every scene has another line of dialogue or stuff at the beginning or end. Some people may not notice a difference, but I think you should still feel a difference. I like it a lot more than the theatrical cut.

I can’t believe some of you are trying to tell me that The Matrix in some way copied Dark City !! The Matrix has very little in common with a movie that did not do very well when it was released, i mean why would anybody copy a movie that was a flop at the box office? it may look a little smilar but thats about all it does, for those of you a little older look for a movie called Bound released in 1996 and also by the Wachowski Brothers, the way this movie is shot has much more in common with the Matrix and was released 2 years before Dark City.

A brilliant, inspired work of pure genius!!!

The most underrated film of the recent times! A unique mix of film noir and sci-fi. I suspect many here too young to appreciate the noir style and therefore naturally a drawn to the flashier and more action packed The Matrix. This is a poor comparison imho!

No mention here of the luscious Jen Connelly (before she became skeletal, here she is still quite plump and fleshy :)

Looking forward to the 720p DC version! :)
