PowerDVD is getting bigger and “smarter” just like Nero :S

See-it-All – Extend your notebook viewing time by saving power and auto-adjusting playback speed

Sounds like an interesting feature, especially if you have a laptop with poor battery life. Lord of the Rings at 4x speed FTW.

I keep trying PowerDVD and wanting to like it but usually I end up uninstalling it after 10 minutes. Some day there will be a version that I won’t hate. Someday…

Waiting for a non-bloat version makes about as much sense as waiting for a non-bloat version of nero. Face it, this is the way the old software we love will continue to be released, and it will only get worse. Its really all about disabling the crap you dont need on startup, then its not bloatware any longer. Its takes one minute to do, then you have a layer that in my option offers some of the best video and audio options on the market, like clev-2.

Is this the version of PowerDVD that was crippled by removing the capability to play Bluray (or maybe exclusively BD+) HD video files from harddisk?

I read something like that a week or so ago.

(The idea being that – since ripping to HD is possible now – this way you still need the BD-disc to play such content.)

    Still using WinDVD 6.

PowerDVD was good 8 years ago when it wasn’t demanding as WinDVD and played DVDs on weaker computers smoothly.

WinDVD was ruined in version 7 with removing the usage of the mouse wheel which I love to adjust the volume.

I like to copy my dvd/blu-ray videos to my hard drive and watch them from there to avoid the extra noise of optical drives…is watching those easier and (in some cases in previous versions it was not even possible) possible with this one??

I found the info regarding castration of a recent version of Pow3rdvd on http://www.doom9.org (at 2007-11-17 in news):

    quote:
‘And speaking of selling things to the public, Cyberlink recently removed one very useful feature from their PowerDVD Ultra player – the software used to play both HD formats from your harddisk, but that feature has disappeared without notice in the most recent patch. When asked, Cyberlink will tell you that the feature has been removed due to pressure from the AACS LA and the movie studios…’

doom9 does not mention the exact version of powerdvd that outroduced the feature.

I also am a BIG fan of the VLC player. It will play files that Media Player OR Power DVD will not play. Sometimes in MP I get audio and just the ‘bouncing colours’ for video. I know it’s a codec issue, but don’t care ’cause VLC playes them fine. LOL!!

Anyrate. I am not sure if VLC can do the Blue so to speak, so this may be a handy application to add to your Christmas list.

    Take Media player classics instead.

No shiny 200MB special effects. Does what it is supposed to do. No install, no serial/crack just DL and play anything (If you are missing codecs download latest ffdshow)

I prefer free sw just because it has features i need not the ones that look great but takes 20%cpu

I used CORE’s release of PowerDVD 7.3.3304, uninstalled it, and installed this new 7.3.3516 -DVT release, and now i get no sound playing ANY media with PowerDVD.. Then I remove -DVT, and re-install CORE’s – now the sound is back again..

What’s wrong with this new release?? ..me using Vista maybe??

    LOL!

    Intervideo WinDVD??

Jesus Christ… thats the lamest excuse for a Media Player I’ve ever seen. Bugs, crashes galore… dont like the way its bundled with every new PC also….

Cyberlink PowerDVD FTW! Tho, yeh, this version does tend to have a heap of useless extras. 6 is the benchmark imo for any DVD-Media player.
