Cyberbullying made illegal by new law

In Dardenne Prairie, Mo., town officials have passed a measure making online harassment illegal. It’s a different kind of Megan’s Law, made in response to the death of 13-year-old Megan Meier. She hanged herself last year after receiving a malicious message from a friend she met online. Megan became friends with Josh Evans on the social networking site Myspace.com. Josh claimed he was 16 years old and being home-schooled in a nearby town. But one day, Josh sent a message to the young girl, saying she was “a bad person” and “everyone hates you.” The cruelty and magnitude of the messages led Megan to hang herself in her bedroom closet on Oct. 16, 2006. Weeks later, her parents learned that Josh was not a real person. He was just an online identity created by a parent of a former friend of Megan’s and her mother who lived down the street in their St. Louis suburb.

The two teenagers had argued, and the girl’s mother wanted to find out whether Megan was saying negative things about her daughter. Using clues from a journalist’s article, bloggers not only identified but began to harangue the friend’s mother, hurling epithets and referring to the girl’s family as “psychos who pushed a teenager to suicide.” The mother’s contact details and a photo of her husband were also posted online, as if to invite the online community to take justice into their own hands. At least a third of all teenagers say that they have been victims of cyberbullying at some point. But victims of online harassment that doesn’t escalate to physical harm sometimes do not pursue legal action. So no cursing about English at RLSLOG anymore or we’re gonna sue you, got that?

Call me crazy, but isn’t a law limiting the things you can say kind of, how would i say this… unconstitutional?

but who cares, how important is the constitution at this point anyway?

Yes, its everybodys fault xcept the parents. A familiy is an entity which helps you through your childhood, helps with your problems and teaches right and wrong. If a family cant support their child, dont give her/him a pc unless you monitor it. Quite simple in my eyes :(

Nah, harassment laws have included verbal abuse for decades – freedom of speech does not include abuse or slander; where cyber-bullying clearly lies. The question will be how do they enforce something like this, where it’s possible to gain almost complete anonymity over the internet – you can easily just say it was someone else unless they catch you in the act – which would be very hard to do.

Any of you heard of Lori Drew? She set up a fake myspace account and eventually drove one of her daughter’s friends to suicide.

People like her(Drew) need to go to jail.

Good step towards restricting people’s rights. Tipycal american
approach. If I have the right for love, then I have the right for hate… If i can say: I love you, then I can say: I hate you. So simple, no need to find any offense. The only ones who are responsible for the girs’s death are her parents.
Why couldn’t tell them she got a message like that? Come on… you have to be an idiot letting your 13 years old child using internet. This is not a peaceful word.

public slander is illegal, however you can say whatever you want to anyone unless they file a restraining order against you for it.

Anyone who is stupid enough to kill themselves because of something that is said to them, especially something said to them online, doesn’t really deserve to live in the first place. The stupid and weak have ways of killing themselves off, at least some of them are responsible enough to do it without endangering others. ^_^

Its kids for crying out loud, they do stupid things all day long. Thats what being a kid is all about, doing stupid stuff and learning from your mistakes. But theres a huge difference between making mistakes and being manipulated into doing things you cant regret, like suicide, especially when adults are involved. Freedom of speech comes with responsibility, something which a lot of people dont seem to want to accept. And I cant someone would actually think suicide could somehow benefit society, “the weak dont deserve to live”, thats what the nazis thought.

    Hikaricore……..

Those who call others stupid and weak are often so themself.

You have a pretty hateful streak in your persona.

She was a young girl, and was possibly already suffering depression or a plethora of other mental illness’s, making her highly susceptible to negative suggestions, abuse and hateful messages.

Again….. she was a young girl, do you know have a sister ? a daughter ? . Perhaps one day when you do, you will understand yourself a little more.

Your views of human life have become shallow, narrow and jaded, far to much exposure to the internet and playing games.

Try getting out in the real world, and educate and widen your view of life and the people around you.

And to anyone growing hard and cold inside themselves i suggest the same. Go spend time with loved ones, family and friend……… if you don’t have any……… go make some!

Children are susceptible at this point in their lives and try to become accepted by their peers by attempting to ‘fit in’.

Children being naive has been exploited by others (including adults) to reinforce negative images/stereotypes which have led to these sad events.

I personally think it’s a good that people who are found to be perpetrating this kind of behaviour are brought to the attention of the authorities.

Before the widespread use of the net, mobiles etc, children had a least one place (hopefully) they could go and not have to face bullies- HOME. It just seems that even now bullying can continue 24/7.

Children should be protected and made to feel safe in their environments.

I agree with the guys talking about how if you kill yourself, then good ritence.
I mean comon! There are billions of us, and hundreds of millions are ‘brought up’ improperly. To be to superficial and trivial in things.

Killing yourself should be something someone only does for the direct good of others. Eg. Sacrifice. That is the only time it can really be justified.

I cherish life, as toward the 2nd/3rd quarter of the century immortality COULD will be in reach of humans. Thats really spectacular…
Still… We were born to survive. The only real reason we are here is to survive – mainly in form of reproduction – until we evolve some more, and some more until what ever the hell is supposed to happen then…
Life is questionable, but still I would not purge my “hard drive” intentionally :p.

But I INVITE all “emos”, as they are called, to purge what ever part of themselves they want as long as it doesn’t effect me :) .

    It’s sad. . .
The girl, as well the mother of the friend..or better yet, both families need counseling & some serious help.

A little misguided girl sitting in her home (with a roof) on the computer (probaly in her own room) conversing to some unknown leads to some wrong choices…
and she commits suicide…it’s a pity. Sure.
But there are TONS of ways this could have been prevented.
    ..hotlines.. forums.. community centers..friends, FAMILY?
Even friiiiiiking MYfackingSPACE could have helped
if she had reported abuse!?! Most, if not all “friend sites”
/ social network / community sites have a way of reporting abuse and even having them verify and if true contact the authorities.
Both families obviously had problems to begin with.

But you know what I think, fack’ them…
    Everyone has got problems.

They obviously weren’t smart enough to deal with theirs,
that’s sad, especially living in the country they do,
which offers soo much help & support.
I rather show my support to the other half of the world, which were born with problems or been given problems by “superior” countries and can’t do nothing about it…..

    WTF HAPPENED TO THE EXPRESSION
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”

Children are being KILLED WITH BULLETS & BOMBS and their parents can’t do nothing about it, while another child gets insulted a few times while her parents could have but did nothing.

THAT’S WHAT SAD. IT’S LIFE. WE ALL GOTTA DEAL WITH IT.

@ 0000, yours is the best comment i have seen here. Children are being overexposed to stuff prematurely and this is bound to have serious repercussions. parents are only interested in earning money, they think that buying play stations and plasma’s for their kids is all they should do. parents rarely spend time with kids these days and the child seeks to the outside world for conversation, and here’s where the problem starts.

I agree that you take responsibility for your actions but kids (ie HS age kids)do tend to take relationships very seriously, and their image in their social group.
Cyberbullying can be a very effective tool against someone you dislike. I have a daughter who was bullied at school (verbal and minor physical) and it nearly destroyed her – until she found she had friends as well. Her final comment on the subject of further bullying was “I’ll deck her” (ie punch her out) – not an ideal solution but effective.
With cyber bullying it is a silent campaign, who do you ‘deck’?

Call me anti-social / jaded / whatever you like really – This is my opinion, if you dont like it, thats great, have your own say, thats the joy of the internet :D

But I’d place the blame 100% on the parents of the child that /quit.

Apparently they weren’t paying close enough attention to / caring for their child. I know alot of ppl will argue with me about making assumptions there, but if they aren’t to blame who is?

It’s not up to others to protect that girls mental health.. It’s up to her and her parents. That may simply not be feasible anymore, to monitor or control her 24/7, but that doesn’t make it any less the parents responsibility. If they CANT protect their child they should be finding ways to do so / fighting for the right to, or even just limiting her freedom / not granting total license like most parents do these days :S

I’d also argue that if she was set off by a few words on the internet, it probably would’ve happened eventually with some other cause. People don’t become mentally unstable in a day, there are almost always a plethora of underlying factors.

There will also ALWAYS be people out there that do the wrong thing, and thats NEVER going to change. It’s up to parents to either protect their children, or to give them the tools to protect themselves. Ignorance is no defense in court, why should it hold up in raising a human life?

““the weak dont deserve to live”, thats what the nazis thought.” – erm no, actually I’m pretty sure survival of the fittest was nature’s idea.. And in every circle of nature its a REQUIREMENT for a species’ continued survival. Why do we believe we’re so different?

Neitchzie just realized what a ridiculous notion the idea of total equality is. Equality is a great ideal, we’d all love to think that every human being is just as valuable as any other. Yet by nursing our weak/lame/unstable/crippled/sickly/’unworthy’ we do weaken society as a whole (resources, manpower, etc), so how can you argue that they aren’t a negative effect?

The harsh reality that Neitchzie saw, was that we’ve already passed the point of population on earth that’s sustainable over the long term. If we put in population control worldwide today, and said that each couple could only have 2 children (zero population growth), we’d still be screwed.

Society needs to develop SOME method whereby people must actually FIGHT to survive (ie, survival of the fittest,) or we’re literally going to pity ourselves to death.

Of course the problem was, who has the power to decide who is more valuable than someone else? Noone really should have that right. And yes, I also agree, the Nazi’s had some quite odd, unfair & inhumane ideas on that. But as usual nature seems to have found a way, where depression, mental instability & suicides are at a ridiculous high, people who quite likely COULD become a value to society, are literally sacrificing themselves because the world is so screwed up.

Yes I agree its a tragedy, but no I don’t agree this should change law regarding the internet in any way. Its just yet another depressed teenager and another symptom of a much larger problem.

@ Everyone who doesn’t know anything about this story other than what was posted here:

The girl’s myspace use was monitored extremely close. So close in fact that she didn’t even know her own password . . . only the parents knew it. Also there was only one computer in the house and it wasn’t in her room. The parents of the other girl’s family and a few people from the community all joined in on this online harassment. The parents that started the fake account knew this girl had self esteem issues and suffered from an eating disorder and yet persisted with such an evil deception. Megan had killed herself most likely because she was pushed over the edge by a “boy” who led her on and then began posting many horrible things about her, even posting personal messages they had shared. The girl’s mother took her other daughter to an appointment and told Megan to get off the computer. The mother came home and she was still on so the mother was mad at her. The last thing Megan said to her mom was “I thought you were on my side.” She then went to her room and hanged herself. When an ambulance came to the house, everyone involved was told to keep quiet about the account. The other family then started to try and comfort Megan’s family as if they hadn’t had any hand in her death at all. These people even asked to store their foosball table at Megan’s family’s house. Upon realizing what they had done, they chopped up the table and dumped it on their lawn.

Anyone with the internet would know the whole story. To make it fair I do keep up with events. I’m journalist at all times, I guess.

    @96 4121

Well, then if the girl was so far gone this could have happened anytime. The internet has zero to do with the fact the girl was suicidal and the parents raised her to be a freaking EMO… If teasing led to her suicide it could have happened anytime anywhere. The stuff you described sounds the opposite of leaving your child without assistance. The parents sheltered the kid so much that they basically made sure she would be in very poor shape to fight off agressors.

Face it, no amount of protection will ever save a weak minded individual from blaming the world and do the suicide coward way out. This is a stupid law and will NEVER be enforced.

“Society needs to develop SOME method whereby people must actually FIGHT to survive (ie, survival of the fittest,) or we’re literally going to pity ourselves to death”

No need. There will always be some way of selection. Like “commit suicide if the kid next door makes fun of you online”. Honestly, i see little need to coushin all of society to make sush weak/unfit people survive. If they do survive (highly unlikely) what will they, in the future, do to their kids? Perhaps drown them in the tub or something! Waste of resources.

I feel for the parents of the child (losing a child must be horrible) but maybe next time they’ll raise a fighter instead of such a loser.

    @99

I was only stating the entirety of the facts since a lot of it was left out the story and a lot of people commenting were saying stuff that went against things in the actual reports (parents not caring about her, not close to her, not monitoring computer usage).

I do admit that bullying by peers is something that people just have to deal with, but bullying by adults who pretend to be peers and say things they know (and yes they knew) would trigger a bad reaction in her brain? Hell, that’s just a tad bit demented. Had she been a little older or even made it to dinner she may have learned to cope.

    @101 Basil

Circunstances are clear “basil”, kid was on the verge of doing the suicide routine and a tiny push was all it took. What facts do you want me to consider? The kid was a grade A loser and proved it with flying colours. And i would bet you know about as much as me so why do you get off on telling me to stop writting?

And i’m a “computer geek”? What do you know about me you moron? Do you know what i do for a living? what interaction have we had? Cuz i sure don’t remember

I bet you don’t even know what survival of the fittest really means and you’re getting ape on me? LOL… Please don’t kill yourself too, i could never live with myself afterwards… Oh wait… I wouldn’t give a crap…

The backstory on this was good to read, as much as it was clearly from the parents perspective and sounds a little distorted in parts to me, we never see totally unbiased news from anywhere in the media heh :/

For instance “keeping quiet” isn’t something i’d be considering after i knew someone had just driven my daughter to suicide.

But yes it’s a terrible situation, although it sounds like the parents were quite aware of what was happening.. Surely they could’ve done something to stop these people interacting with their child.

From the sounds of it the other family was quite mentally disturbed as well, Idlely and knowingly destroying a young girl. But I know situations like these rarely end up being that clear cut.

“The parents of the other girl’s family and a few people from the community all joined in on this online harassment.” It sounds more like she’s had a tough time with a lot of people, than a specific incident that ‘killed’ her. Infact it sounds like the typical schoolyard group teasing that kids have been going through for eons, just delivered online.

Children (and yes adults too) can be very cruel with their teasing, and here in Australia we’re some of the worst at it. I was both an ‘overprotected’ and ‘overachieving’ child, and I’ve been teased more than once with material that could’ve driven me all the way to suicide. That is, if I hadn’t grown the confidence to dish it out back where it came from, or the maturity to know that sometimes in life, I will find someone that won’t like me, and if they don’t want accept me for who I am then they’re simply not worth my time. Theres plenty more people out there, and plenty of them will.

To look over my own past, if I had’ve committed suicide, the blame (if not on myself) would NOT be on the people that teased me, but my parents for not teaching me or allowing me the room to develop the skills to protect myself early enough in life. I’ve seen 7 and 8 year old kids with these skills, which I didn’t develop until late into high school, and some 30 year olds I know still don’t have. It’s purely up to upbringing.

If anything I look back now at events during my school life with a fondness, for it was these ‘bullys’ that forced me to face my fears and made me become the man I am today.

In the end the ability to be insulted by someone, and look them back in the face and tell them no, you’re wrong, I’m f***ing awesome, is the very definition of self-confidence. The very lack of which is what killed this girl. :(

I certainly couldn’t blame MySpace and I’m still not convinced at blaming the people that did all this to that poor girl either. I’d love someone to show me a person who’s gone through life and never been teased. Hers may have been particularly harsh and ill timed, but I don’t see anything thats happened to her thats exceptionally unusual from what happens to thousands upon thousands of other kids.. It’s the modern day rite of passage. “Survival of the fittest” even as I mentioned before.

“Children are being KILLED WITH BULLETS & BOMBS and their parents can’t do nothing about it, while another child gets insulted a few times while her parents could have but did nothing.”

Very well put! I think that sums it up nicely. In the end there was very little Myspace or a 3rd party could’ve done to help this girl, but plenty the parents could’ve done. Infact they were the only ones in a position to see what was happening and do something about it. Their blaming others is understandable, but unfortunately just not honest. They were far from helpless bystanders, they just didn’t do enough to save her.

Also just for the record, I may subscribe to ’survival of the fittest’, but I also give my $35 a month to ‘Save the Children’. The kids that are dying without even a chance to succeed – thats criminal.
