Cyberbullying becoming a new inet problem
Nearly one in three teenagers who use the Internet say they have been harassed online by “cyberbullies” who spread rumors, post embarrassing pictures, make private conversations public and even send threatening messages. “Bullying has entered the digital age,” the Pew Internet & American Life Project stated this week in a report based on a telephone poll of 935 kids, ages 12 to 17. Adolescent cruelty has moved from the whispers and shouts of the schoolyard to the online world, where teens often feel insulated from the consequences of their actions, kids reported in focus groups conducted in addition to the poll. One 15-year-old boy admitted threatening to kill a girl in an electronic message.”I played a prank on someone but it wasn’t serious,” the boy told researchers. “I told them I was going to come take them from their house and kill them and throw them in the woods.
It’s the best prank because it’s like ‘Oh my God, I’m calling the police,’ and I was like ‘I’m just kidding, I was just messing with you.’ She got so scared though.” Girls reported being bullied online more often than boys, with girls aged 15 to 17 being the most common targets. Fifteen percent of teenagers who use the Internet said their private e-mail, instant messages or text messages have been forwarded to others or posted to public sites without their permission. Thirteen percent said rumors have been spread about them online, and another 13 percent have received threatening or aggressive e-mails, IMs or text messages. Six percent said cyberbullies have posted embarrassing pictures of them online. I’m pretty sure most of you have also an experience with cyberbullying, especially if you are an user of some personal forum or site like Facebook. Although I do not consider it as a real threat yet, it may be really annoying for some people.

Not to sound like a complaint..
but if you’re going to post news, please make it interesting or technology related, please.
^^^^^^^ Sounds like someone is a victim of cyber bullying .. =[
yes, post intellectual news or i’ll kill you.
I have been mocking the whole cyber-bullying scheme since it became ‘the hot news’ a year ago. I really believe that its a bunch of hype by bureaucrats, and nothing of a concern really. It should just be called harassment, not cyber bullying.
Nick – but this is technology news. I.E News regarding the use or in this case, the misuse of technology.
I work for a mobile/cell phone company and I get customers attempting to bully me for various reasons. The differerence is that I am 39 and have the age and experience to handle it. The average Teenager does not, this is why it’s a problem.
lmao!! cyberbullies.. WTF? They have never heard of the mute button and or ignore feature? Right click name and ignore perma. If that doesnt work ask a damn admin to mute them. A bunch of pussies in the world and on the internet. This is whats wrong with schools and kids killing people. Instead of letting kids stand up for themselves, they bitch and moan to a teacher and everyone is shitting themselves. Kids complain about being bullied in school and that’s why they used the ak-47 on there friends and loved ones. Bullshit. If schools allowed self defense classes and let the kids beat the hell out of each other while being supervised to make sure no one died, it would all be okay.

doesnt sound like you understoot the issue if you think the mute/ignore button will help this problem.
but again this is probably not the right forum to do this discussion, judging by the level of inteligence usually spewed out on other posts.
thumbs up to Martin for posting it, its very relevant and quite a lot of people are affected by it. from people being threatened to kill to people having intimate pictures and conversations posted online.
cyber bullying…. i remember about 6 years ago when this was on my school news channel. channel 1 news, it is sad when you get so offended and scared buy mere text. if someone posts something about you forget about it, maybe argue about you have a little fun text fighting then give it up. it is only text.
nah seriously… i had this guy follow me for 2 years online… hed copy my photos, post them on forums saying stupid shit to make me look bad, making out to be me!
its very annoying, it doesnt really bother me, the way i see it is… if the loser has time to sit there thinking about me, hes really saying how much of a wanker he is, with nothing better to do! but i could see how young kids get affected… so yeh
Why can’t people learn not to disclose anything personal on the internet, keep their online identities apart from their real one and learn to ignore e-clowns who try to harass them? It’s not that hard and it avoids you loads of problems.
Besides, you can ignore a an online flame or e-gossip but you can’t ignore a punch to the gut. Teens should just suck it up and live in the real world.
Cyberbullying… just shut the fuck up!
Gizzzmo is right. People give away their most private parts on websites like MySpace. That information is there for everyone to see and abuse. I know it’s ‘the life’ nowadays to do so, but it makes a thing like cyberbullying so damn easy.
#7 (elc) I guess you mean by intelligence “people who don’t share your view”? An intelligent person can avoid a thing like cyber-bullying by changing his MO or even finding the source. Somebody tried this shit on me once, I found out who it was (it is usually somebody you know) and kicked his ass. Never been ‘bullied’ again. Of course you can just sit back and read every e-mail coming in, but you are an idiot if you do.
#9 (lucas) YOU did put the original pictures online right? When an image is on the net it’s free for all, don’t whine if it turns up on some unsavourly sites. Some female friends of mine are whining on about the fact that people are abusing (jacking-off to) their online pictures. My advise: don’t post any sexy pictures of yourself. But nooooo, they want to show the world how ‘hot’ they are. IT’S THEIR OWN DAMN FAULT!!!
You don’t have to read e-mails, you can ignore persons in a chat or change your account, you can avoid being flamed on a forum. It IS that easy. If you don’t now how, get of the freakin’ internet!
is there an anonymous care-line for the victims?
Its a serious debate about cyberbullying and some of you act like you was born under a stone.Whats you problem !?.If you dont like the page, leave when there still is a lot of Internet users who have to learn it the hard way when they dont see the bad dudes behind the screen and thanks for a good web page.
Survival of the e-fittest. Bully or get bullied. To be honest I ‘m thinking along the same lines as Mr X, this could slowly grow into an ‘International Problem’ thus prompting more censorship and policing further down the line.
Kids need to be taught about privacy, tolerance and how to counter act bullying whether online or at school.
the problem is is that it’s more than that so many people are dying now fr nothing people being stalked on the internet having threat messages and such….
you can say this and that about it but the thing is people are gullible and will fall for certian stuff especially if they are computer illiterate first and foremost parents should put security on their pcs to prevent kids for doing such activity….
next instead of people like al sharpton to ban a word while anyone can walk into wal mart and buy a gun we need tighter laws on guns and other deadly weapons
Nobody cares. Log off and shut up.
The world’s fucked. Unfortunately we made it this way.

well one time, a friend of mine pretended has a girl and had videochating with a guy of the area that things is the best, then posted the video on the net of the guy showing is peanus LOL it was pure ownage
cyber bully?? wtf lololllol..
only idiots who lives on the internet get “bullied” lolol
Shup up or i’ll cyber wedgy you!
I think I could be a career cyber-bully, it would be very fun.
Its pretty much anarchy on internet, unlimited freedom makes people total assholes. I mean just look at the comments here, when was the last time you told a total stranger t shut up in real life? Most people dont, because then they have to deal with the consequences and conflicts, something which you can completely ignore online. Internet is pretty much a sandbox for psychopaths.
MadBunny you should know the difference between a joke and a real “shut up”, get a life dude you really need it. I feel sorry for you and I’ll gladly cyber wedgy you too! here i come!
rofl .. cyber-bully.
It’s just the internet, if you feel threatened by it, call your ISP, and cancel the service. Nobody is making you stay, matter of fact, nobody wants you to stay, you’re wasting bandwidth.

Bullying in just plain society is not acceptable…. I do not care for it one bit…. We need to stop it now and address the issue when it come up.
