Countrywide inet filters launched in Australia
WEB users have slammed a Federal government plan to filter Net content, with a couriermail.com.au poll showing major opposition to the soon-to-be-trialled proposal. Internet service providers will test a blacklist of about 1000 illegal websites for the Rudd Government’s bid to protect Australians from viewing obscene material. Within days, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy will ask internet service providers such as BigPond and iiNet to participate in a live pilot trial to test internet filters.
The blacklists would probably apply to “real depictions of actual sexual activity:, child pornography, bestiality, material containing excessive violence or sexual violence, detailed instruction in crime, violence or drug use and material which advocated the commission of a terrorist act. But the filtering plan has infuriated net users, because it could slow internet speeds by 30 per cent even though it will do little to block illegal content. That’s the warning from technical experts, who also say the plan could expose users’ financial details during online banking sessions and see popular websites including Facebook and YouTube banned.

This goes pretty much against the basic purpose of the internet.
yesssss. web users win another one
Who voted for that prick?
notice to Americans, vote wisely – things like this start happening when there is a douchbag in charge.
Could someone please tell me how the Labour party became more conservative than the Liberal party?
Our art galleries are being censored, our internet is being censored, it’s ridiculous. Tin Tin has completely lost the plot.
Gotta love that your country stinks, eh? This would NEVER happen in a normal country. There would be riots and politicians would be beheaded.
So i guess rlslog will be the first thing to be banend, due to us being able to say “terrorist”!
Gotta love that your country stinks, eh? This would NEVER happen in a normal country. There would be riots and politicians would be beheaded.
Because of course George W would never try anything like it would he? The truth is it can happen in any democracy if the douchebags in charge are set to control public perception. Even in Canada a political party sought to include a censorship provision hidden in a tax bill. Luckily for them a few reporters caught on.
If this is so, im leaving the country. What is this? Communism?
The great firewall of Australia?
Content filtering (for your own good) is going to be a centerpiece of Australia’s new anti-immigration policy. Nobody in their right mind would want to immigrate to Australia with outrageous prices for substandard Internet access and unwanted and unwarranted big-brother protection.
Our sympathy Aussies. But we are soon to follow with Internet usage capped by greedy ISP’s.
Live Free and Free the Internet.
Why would the people of Australia support a government act that basically says that the Australians can’t monitor what information they are allowed to access on the Internet them selves. I can understand if the argument was for minors but this act is for the entire Country. Seems like Australia is starting to copy Chinas extreme regulations of media distribution.

As Random said – visit http://nocleanfeed.com/
Don’t just speak about it on forums – write to the minister
Write to your local member
Explain that as a young person (if you are) you voted for them thinking they were different than the Liberals and you won’t vote for them again – and you will remember in a few years when the election comes around
I work in government and letters to the minister do get noticed – the more the better
If you want to know more or any help contact me here no.australian.censorship@gmail.com
Seriously, together we can stop this – but it must be more than writing comments on blogs and forums.
This is bullsh*t. The Australian government are a bunch of wankers.
oh great. that means the new zealand government will follow suit. god f*ing dammit the internet is crap as it is here, we dont need this.
#8 No George W would not impose this on the American people but the Marxist, Socialist read: communist Barack Obama will. It’s called the “fairness act” which will be passed as law the second day of his term if elected.
This program is destined for failure and embarrassment for Senator Conroy, he’d be wise to ditch it before too much money has been wasted.

But my local member is – well- a member; total tool, former advisor to the PM we kicked out a year ago, and his party even had to load the pre-selection process to get him in. Now he is going to be a real help (not); perhaps I should contact him on his web address?? silly me, my comments would be filtered out!
This is a really bad scene, I would have hoped better from Australia. However, even if we don’t behead our politicians (as ‘asdasdq’ would advise) we do kick them out – ‘Kevin07′ you are warned
I guess the priests will go back to screwing kids. LOFL!
Just use a proxy located outside your country. Done!
Slow internet speed by up to 30%?
As if they weren’t slow enough already!
1. Proxy.
2. VPN.
Take your pick.
It will not happen.
To get any legislation through the Senate, the labour Government need either the support of the Coalition or ALL 7 of the other Senators.
If the Coalition say NO to the filtering crap, it will only take one of the other 7 Senators to say No, then the whole filtering thing is dead.
However, you still need to voice your concerns over this whole thing. Email, write letters, make calls – whatever.
Electronic Frontiers Australia is the only place you need to visit and keep an eye on for all the info you need, not the media.
govtwatcher is spot on…it will not happen. There is an almighty outcry, and the Labour Party dont have the numbers…in the ozzie media this week there has been universal condemnation, even from within their party…
@Blankz you’re correct George W has done nothing but uphold U.S citizen’s rights he should be given a medal.
Tool.
I am SOOOO looking forward to this! I mean, a 256kb connection already being shared between 4 computers…..whats to lose?
No one in Australia supports this act, i have not met a single person who does, that’s why we don’t have riots or beheadings (that and its the 21st century) and that’s also why not much is being done by citizens in the form of activism, because they think that just by disagreeing to it that their opinion will be heard. Me and a few friends are going to make our opinion heard, I hope others do to.
We’ve got a few thousand blacklisted sites in Sweden too. Easily bypassed by using other DNS, but still.
We could use a VPN or Proxy but its really not he point, I can see the requirement for filtering some content, however once one thing gets filtered they continue filtering more and more until we turn into China and North Korea. Unfortunately this will be left to the decision of one man who was born before the internet has old fashioned ways which has no idea how important the internet is for today’s freedom of speech.
So this is how it all starts – first they tell you they are doing it to protect you, for your own good. You just need to nod once. And before you know it, you’ve become a slave, a puppet. And your beloved Govt. has turned from democratic to totallitarian regime.
Any Australian reading this, if you value your freedom, speak up. Shout. Gather on the streets.
that is what we get with all those anti-pedo policies, which the only real purpose is to bring us, another censored media, just like the tv and others alredy are, our free speech is going to trash another time. say goodbye to the internet as we met it.
F U C K CENSORSHIP oh and by the way even this craphole site believes in CENSORSHIP so Dont kid yourself thinking that this place is for Freedom of Speech because they aren’t!!!
This is BS, a hate Kevin Rudd he is so smug. This isn’t communist China it’s a free democratic society which should be able to choose. I am not condoning looking at these sites but the morals of this are just screwed up.
So “real depictions of actual sexual activity” is not OK in down under now? Are the Aussies turning to become wussies? Afraid of the pussies?

hmmmm…. i guess you maybe haven’t heard about bush and his position on FISA and getting court orders for phone records and signing statements. those things have been happening all along.
and it’s inevitable to some extent…just how gradual says how much resistance there will be. as long as it’s a slow erosion people will accept.
Get ready people the
NEW WORLD ORDER is coming.
google it to find out more
i can imagine the chaser’s blocking rudd entrance to parliment building & claiming mandatory content filtering.
Yet another thoughtless scheme the aussie govenrment has dreamed up in their goal to bubblewrap Australia… (simular to hiking the price of pre-mix drinks to stop kids drinking…which only boosted the sales of str8 spirits and put the dangerous task of mixing drinks in the hands of the kids)…people find away around this sort of rubbish and the work arounds often take that activity further and further away from the governments ability to regulate and control safety. Either Kevin Rudd is too dumb to realise this or he Thinks his country is to thick that away around it wont be found!
Surely this breaches some freedom to information act. A small minded, and poorly thort out scheme that devorces them of their default responsibility to catch irresponsible individuals that ruin it for the rest of us.
Complete rubbish!
Its quite simple people – the Labour party in Australia f#@kn sux! Kevin DUDD is more suitable name for him
