Console sales grew by 57% from last year
US sales of video game consoles and software have grown 57% over the past year, defying the economic downturn. Consumers snapped up consoles, games and accessories worth $1.7bn during March, according to research firm NPD. Nintendo’s Wii came top with 720,000 units. Microsoft sold 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles, ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3 which found 257,000 customers. “You’d never know the US economy was under distress by looking at the sales figures,” said NPD’s Anita Frazer. Nintendo executives said Wii sales had been driven by the release of Super Smash Bros Brawl, which was the best-selling game in the US in March with 2.7 million copies sold.
Runner-up in the games hit list was the Xbox version of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, with 752,000 sales. Microsoft also celebrated overtaking arch rival Sony in the console wars. Sales of its Xbox 360 had been lagging during the past two months, mainly due to a “supply issue”. Sony for its part said that sales of its relatively new PlayStation 3 had doubled over the past year, and predicted that new games such as Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 would help to sustain momentum.

As far as the economy, I think think that gaming is good bang for the buck as far as entertainment value. Especially if you d/l them all. haha

You are also forgetting Kill Zone 2, Little Big Planet, R:FOM 2 and HOME, myslef being an 360 owner have nothing to look forward to apart from Gear of War 2
@21 GTA4!!!! Who cares if its for multiple consoles. Xbox owners get downloadable content. But I really want to get a ps3 as soon as I can, I love the console just dont have the mula to dish out atm. And maybe a Wii eventually too..

For the massive install base lead that the 360 has over the PS3 and M$’s deal for downloadable episodes, only 58% of pre-order sales of GTA4 belong to the 360 (the difference in units is in the tens of thousands, not millions).
Maybe M$’s $50m investment in this exclusive downloadable content is hitting as many 360 owners as they had hoped. Not to mention that all Arcade/Core owners HAVE to purchase a HDD in order to play it whenever it comes out.
I have heard the extra content is not all that great but we will find out very soon. DLC will make gaming worse off, EA annouced you will have to pay £ /$ / euro for guns in BF : Bad Company if you buy the standard addition WTF so i will only be buying a 3/4, thats not on

EA has stated they will NOT be charging for the extra/better guns do to an out roar from fans and potential buyers.
At first they were going to, but it pissed the gamers off.
