Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst (Advance) (2008)

Conor Oberst is someone who is very much a “love him or hate him” name and person in modern music.  As the lead singer and face of Bright Eyes, he’s become the face of modern emo indie music.  Depending on who you ask, he’s either the next Bob Dylan, or a whiny hack.  Well, I saw this Advance, courtesy of RTB, of his first “solo” work in 13 years.  Released on indie giant label Merge records, home to artists like The Arcade Fire, Spoon, Camera Obscura and more, this will be a release that those of you who enjoy that sound should really like.

Conor Mullen Oberst (born February 15, 1980) is an American songwriter, singer, poet, best known for his work in Bright Eyes. He has also played in several other bands, including Desaparecidos, The Faint, Commander Venus, Park Ave., and his newest project Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band.

@2 you can go listen to rap or whatever it is stupid people listen to. This isn’t emo, Bright Eyes was never emo, and emo itself as a genre was never really emo. There is no such thing as emo. So get over it, this is good stuff.

Hey hey! Smug hipster! So.. that genre that doesn’t actually exist formed in the 90s that multiple artists addressed themselves by (and still do!).. they’re all part of a secret lie that’s whole purpose is for profit and mass confusion? wait wait.. are you saying wikipedia is lying to? OH NOES!

@9 Hey @sshole! I like wikipedia, and everyone knows its never wrong. A quick quote: “As a result, the term “emo” became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music.”

Whiny? Yes. Talented? Definitely. Whether you can appreciate his style of music, Colon Oberst writes songs full of feeling and common experience. He is definitely far from emo, irregardless of the definition of the word you choose to embrace. I’ll definitely be giving this a chance.

    Thanks for this.

And to all you guys arguing over emo, for the love of God, leave it be. Nobody is going to win. Save comments for things that actually relate to the release, not some pissy back and forth between two people that will never meet.

“he’s become the face of modern emo indie music”

folk rock/indie is far more accurate , his music resembles nothing remotely close to emo including early 90’s to present.

I’m disappointed. I love some of his previous stuff (”A perfect sonett” anyone?) but it seems like he’s heading in a new direction with this album. More country.

Emo used to be something completely different, it started in the ’80’s a band called Dag Nasty used to be considered emo, but now it’s just tagged as “old school punk” or whatever. I don’t understand genre’s and never will :P
To someone this kind of music may be “emo” because there is some emotional writing going on, and it sounds emotional because the way the singer brings it. To other people this might just be poetry and just good lyric writing where someone has been putting his heart in.

I don’t know, I never really listened to Bright Eyes and don’t even knew the singers name was Conor Oberst… I’ll give it a try anyway, maybe I’ll like it or maybe not…
