Comcast to create “Bill of P2P rights”

A few weeks after Comcast’s non-deal deal with BitTorrent on making the latter’s P2P apps run more smoothly for the cable operator’s broadband subs, the largest U.S. cable operator said it will begin testing Pando Networks‘ file-sharing technology. On top of that, the two have issued a call for a “P2P bill of rights and responsibilities.” Comcast and Pando plan to convene a group of “industry experts” to discern what options and controls consumers should have when using P2P apps. Secondly, the two want to address what processes and practices ISPs should use to manage file-sharing running on their networks.

One particularly knotty issue the pair hopes to solve is whether “P2P users should have the right to control their computers’ resources when using P2P applications.” As for the tests, Comcast and Pando will examine how file-sharing programs run on other ISP networks, including cable, DSL, fiber and wireless and measure things like performance, speed, distance and geography and bandwidth consumption. Comcast’s recent interest in working with P2P companies comes after the cable company experienced a good deal of regulatory and public criticism for its attempts to slow down file-sharing activity. Feeling somewhat chastened by the backlash, Comcast said it was trying to reduce stress on its bandwidth.

SO 2(to start) commercial entitys want to dictate what the people are allowed to do on the internet??? Oh, sorry..did I say “dictate”?…meant to say come up with some nice ideas that we, the users, have to adhere to so they can fill thier pockets even more? I’m not sure but I’ve got this nagging feeling at the back of my neck that tells me this will not bode well for “we, the users”.

so they want to prove P2P is bad, or prove it’s good?

companies always want to prove something either way before they start research like this

I hope this doesn’t develop into a battle for freedom of speech and rights. I hope “P2P users should have the right to control their computer[s]” because technology should not limit global communication, but enhance it. I understand the legal battles for intellectual property rights, but do governments or ISP’s have the right to limit national or even international communication, be it file sharing or speech. The Internet, this medium, provides dialogue and co-operation over entire continents. I hope the future of the Internet will be developed by the users of it and not by those who seek to control its constantly evolving, socially-guided development.

It’ll just make Comcast even worse off. If my ISP tried to tell me what to do with the amount of bandwidth I payed for, I’d swap ISP, plain and simple. If I pay for 4mb,10mb, whatever, I’m gonna decide how to use those mb’s.

Comcast’s interest in saving bandwidth is completely serving their own interests. Saved bandwidth is bandwidth they can sell to other people.

Comcast just needs to give it a rest…How many ploys are they going to bring forth in order to try and control their network…Comcast is always trying to shape new laws into the American Government, but they understood the rules they had to follow first getting into ISP…And once again I will state who in their right mind would use a p2p program founded by a Isp? I know I wouldn’t, one would have the feds knocking at the door in no time….But I think the American Government will get tired of comcast and their ploys and start to fine them for their unfair practice trades, for the ethic this company has sucks…Them 5 points of ethic they do not cover, but I have to use comcast for this is the fastest connection we have in my area…And yes I know my ethics suck as well, but I am not getting paid for mine so who cares…hahahaha

I use a ISP that is half the speed of comcast b/c I hate them so much. I don’t get how they plan on controlling my computers resources. No one that I know would use that crap program in that case. This article doesnt even tell me what exactly this means for those who do have comcast. I got a feeling they will really crack down on file sharers soon.

I seriously hope Comcast learns the hard way that the customer comes first. and all goverments and isp’s have no right to control any part of the net.

I don’t care how it affects “We the users”, all I care about is how it affects “We the pirates”. And honestly, this only affects those of you who can’t do anything except use torrents. I’ve got plenty of other routes to get my releases besides bittorrent, so none of this really concerns me.

btw, I’ve been pirating software since I first ever got a PC and nothing the software industry has done since ‘87 has ever affected my getting software without paying. if bittorrent goes away, it will only affect those that were already on the fence about whether or not to buy the software. I don’t have the option to buy it, so I never will.

Hey everyone, I have some interesting information for you all: Comcast is on the verge of extinction. I know someone who works in development at Verizon. Currently, Verizon owns full rights to fiber optic cable, which is going to be the next dominating form of hi-speed Internet. Because they own the rights, Comcast isn’t allowed to produce their own fiber-optic networks.

Verizon is currently testing the technology in smaller areas and it’s being met with encouragement. Comcast has been monitoring their activities and is getting scared. They won’t be around much longer once fiber-optic begins to spread further.

I was told fiber-optic would be available through Verizon in most areas by the end of this year.

The problem is, Comcast and all the other cable providers in the US hold a monopoly of each area. If I did something really bad to piss Comcast off, and they shut off my internet and refused to cooperate, I would have NO OTHER ALTERNATIVES! I just wouldnt have cable anymore…What is that called? A monopoly. Funny…the Anti-Trust act is suppose to protect us from such things. Ironically enough, it is the government itself that prevents competing cable companies to service the same area…(eg, the government is disregarding its own law)

Lovely…if only I had the ability to move someplace else…

Fcking democrats…fcking republicans…Yet another piece of evidence to prove I am the only sane person left alive…

What they have to do before this is, increase the damn speed to 100mbps for the users now instead 2009. Maybe that helps to reduce stress on their lines even though most people including me will try to cap it lol.

Or sit and wait for “internet 2″ they been testing for universities and governments.
