Coalition of teachers demands ban on videogame
A coalition of groups representing four million teachers in several countries, including Canada, is urging retailers to refuse to sell a controversial video game about school bullying. Bully: Scholarship Edition features a shaven-headed teenager who adjusts to life at a new boarding school by harassing others, which the organizations say glorifies bullying. The abuse includes dunking pupils’ heads in toilets, photographing them naked and physically assaulting them. Teachers are also targeted. “We’re asking retailers to be responsible,” Emily Noble, president of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, said Monday. “Yes, they can sell it and make a buck out of this, but is this the kind of marketing that they want to be [doing], selling games that glorify violence?”
The video game, which goes on sale Tuesday, is an updated version of the original game, Bully. Both titles were developed by Vancouver-based Rockstar Games, which is also responsible for the controversial Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt series. Monday, a spokesman noted that Bully won several awards and said critics are overreacting. A recent review of Bully: Scholarship Edition on the video game website IGN.com calls it “a light-hearted simulation of the horrors of high school.” Most of the combat is hand-to-hand fighting, the review says, though there are also other weapons: “Firecrackers explode in an opponent’s face, itching powder distracts an enemy, stink bombs damage their pride and marbles make pursuers tumble to the ground.” The game, which is rated Teen for players 13 and over, is being released for XBox 360 and Wii.

Well, this game blew anyway. The point is, Im really starting to get sick of whiny little idiots who still think media should be censored for fear that it will “corrupt our youth”. Listen, buddy…if you dont want your children corrupted, DONT GIVE IT TO THEM! Bloody hell, WTF is wrong with these parents if they have such a beef against stuff like this?! Are they incapable of enforcing their f’ing duty as parents?! Or do they just lack the man/womanhood that they try so hard to show off?! Learn to be adults before having children, you morons! And teachers need to get a life and stop trying to force people to do things that go by their “superior judgment”. Every human being is capable of making their own f’ing choice.

I’m not against any game, i think all games are fine and do not put people up to violence more. However, this game should be strictly sold only to people of 21+ in my opinion. Do we really want to see more Columbine incidents ? I won’t say this will put all people up to it but i don’t support school bullying, it can make someone’s youth horrible. I do think it’s fine however to have it as a game as i said, if it’s being sold to a 18 or 21+ age.
Well it may not be appealing to some, but I’ve been wanting to play the game… I remember when it came out, the media was going crazy over how “controversial” it is… Well the only difference this game has from other violent games is that you’re a teen in it. If you’re an adult, would you let your son play a game like the Punisher and not allow him to play this game? Not much of a difference… You shove people into meat grinders, drill their brains out, feed people to pirhannas, and even throw people in cremators in the Punisher… Who cares? If you don’t wanna play it, don’t get it.

I picked it up for the PS2 and laughed at it because it’s so obviously a spit-in-the-face at people that thought it was going to be a “Columbine simulator.” It was one of the mildest, silliest things I think I’ve ever played, with not much more violence than you’d see on network TV or would come across in a real high school. And the main character is trying to MAKE PEACE with all of the bullying groups of the school, not pick on innocent kids. Yeah, there are pranks and most fighting is done with fists. Any teachers picked on are horrible people anyway, because most everybody in the game is horrible.
Well, it all comes back to “if you don’t like it, don’t let your kids play it,” doesn’t it? God forbid you actually pay attention to what your kids are doing.

Rockstar makes the best games for PC – IMO (CoD4 is an exeption).

Just shows how stupid society is becoming, Bully is not particularly violent, its no Manhunt, in fact from what I recall there was hardly any, if no blood in the game hence the “Teen” rating. Its one of the smartest video games out there and has a really wicked sense of humor, more people need to play Bully, its a seriously under-rated classic.

Thats funny, i actually was sort of pissed that i sold my WII when i saw this today at blueshirts, i put it on featured next to our wii demo station and loaded it into the wii for all to play.

Sounds like fun. Just another game that imitates life . If schools have issues with bullying maybe they should sort that out and stop butting into the ideas of games developers. Sounds more like the developers are being blamed for the teachers incompetence. Maybe they should ban Batman, Spider-man etc since they promote vigilante violence or Mario because it promotes jumping on someones head. I can sit and play Call of duty 4 all day but I don’t see myself reaching for machine gun and blasting everyone in sight. If they had it their way we would end up with games like walking the old lady across the street which I can’t see flying off the shelves without a little gore. I for one am for censorship when it’s valid. In this case i don’t think it is. I think that the video game based rating system works. It should become the parents responsibility to control what is allowed in their own homes.

I was wondering what was this “Columbine” thing cuz someone was talking about it…..So I checked it up the Net and I was like shocked.
I am just an 18 year old guy who like everybody else likes playing a Rated/violent games and watchin movies . I dont know why people/teenagers cant draw a line between right and wrong. But I do think that violent games and movies do contribute to things like school shooting, whatever the rating be of a game even a 10 year old can get it from anyone/internet etc. so its not foolproof there. I don’t live in America so I don’t know how things are there…. the other reason is easily available weapons and many other factors…..maybe I went a bit off topic here its just that I am shocked from what I have read about Columbine

With such saturation in our society of the seedier side of human nature.. it’s absolutely bound to rub off on a certain weak willed section of society.. and it’s exactly this type of person, who whilst being able to tell right from wrong, still finds it impossible to restrain or control himself..
As for this game.. to me it looks bloody terrible, a pointless waste of time and HD space.. there are people with such inadequate mental faculties that they will be amused by it and tempted to.. for example.. dunk heads and strip and photograph (slap happy, a phrase which I find utterly vile, happens already.. it’s certainly not going to take much to devolve into something else.)
The fact of the matter is that 18+ WON’T be playing this game because it is simply purile and lame.. it’s only going to appeal to the very section who should not be playing it.. but Rockstar know all this anyway… Personally I WOULD ban this game, it’s too stupid for adults and completely unsuitable for children.

As far as banning of this is concerned, I’m totally with #22 ELCouz. If voilence is the problem, then they should strt with boxing and all forms of martial art, then they should hang Bas Rutten and line up the WWE wrestlers against the wall to face a firing sqad. Then they should track down and neuter / spay all the SOB commenters @ Rlslog just like myself… etc etc. And finally decide whether to ban this game or not. (Damn those pansy a5s baastards! i remember playing this on ps2 and in all honesty i found it a dumbed down version of GTA if anything, and in the game the main character helps out some teachers, nerds and even the lunch lady at times. bullying has and always will happen its pack mentality, humans at the core are no different then most animals (grouping up and picking on the weak) so banning a video game will stop this?? pffffft what a joke how about people actually be parents and if their kid is being a bully give him a smack across the head….

Played the original on Ps2 and it was reasonable. Well done enough that it did not annoy the hell out of me and kept me playing. Those moving for this to be banned don’t and will likely never understand that the game is built as a comedic look on a school’s user structure, not some bullying-simulator. The school that this game presents to the player is already a joke in terms of the hierarchy of staff and students, to the point that any sane individual can see that any wrongdoing is justifiable simply due to it being so unreal.
Maybe if Rockstar had thrown in some drugs and violent gang interaction it would be as bad as these four-million people try to make it seem. To themselves, if no one else, that is.

This makes me wonder about the education of children. These teachers don’t seem to have any problem stomping on freedom of speech and thought, and yet they have the power to do it more so than anyone else by teaching to-be citizens what thoughts and actions are right or wrong.
Amazing how the school board admits no liability when one of it’s social experiments goes off. Hell of a lobby to fight against, when it’s an entirely welfare economy (a very well paid one at that).
Truth is, education comes from the concept of straw into bricks. Learning how to deal with things like food, waste, fresh water and recycling add value in quality of life. The value of education they teach is questionable.
So what if some students got together and mock their sacred cow, some of them deserve it (as most can likely attest).

That’s part of what made the game so cool in the first place. In the game footage they’ve been showing on the televisions around here, you only see ONE piece of gameplay footage involving a gun, and even then you can tell it’s a Super-Soaker type. This is just another attempt by people who are politically motivated against any groundbreaking or alterstream (what I call the alternative to mainstream) media to try and influence what we do. Just because this is the same people behind GTA and Manhunt doesn’t mean all their games focus on the immoral activities some people choose to participate in. I can come up with at least three games made by larger companies than Rockstar that should be restricted for some of the content they have, and they’re choosing to go after THIS?!
Another thing to think about–how many of these teachers actually sat down and played this game to its fullest when it was first released? Obviously they didn’t, because they would have known better. It’s the Dogma Effect–people trash on a project until they experience it, and they realize that the content was not at all what they had been imagining it to be. Tell you what–play the game, THEN come back to us, and we’ll see if your opinion stays the same. Until then, keep your political motivations to yourself and let the gaming public decide its fate.
