Cloverfield READNFO 720p Bluray x264-Chakra
A pretty old scene group Chakra (do you remember their SVCDs?) released a Blu-ray rip of great thriller Cloverfield. I associate this movie mostly with shaky cam which caused dizzy feelings to many people, but it was actually quite original, although the trailer looked more promising than final result. Anyway, this release comes with a special mkv2bluray file which enables you to convert the standard mkv file to burnable Bluray disc, which is playable on PS3 (and on XboX360 in the future), so you don’t have to hassle with reencoding the whole movie.
Cloverfield follows five New Yorkers from the perspective of hand held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie starts as a monster of unknown origin destroys a building. As they go to investigate, parts of the building and the head of the Statue of Liberty come raining down. The movie follows their adventure trying to escape and save a friend, a love interest of the main character.

When you haven’t watched this yet you should. I really liked it. I thought I would hate the shaky camera thing, and I did the first 15 minutes, but after that I got used to it. It does give the movie a more intense/first person feeling.

The principle behind the mkv2bluray conversion will only work on standard blu-ray compliant res mkv files (i.e. 1280×720 or 1920×1080). This can be done simply using a batch file or TSremux – to create the directory structure.
Anything non-standard res will have to be encoded to the standard res if you then want to create a blu-ray or AVCHD.

If anyone is interested I will be filming the bluray original with a CAMcorder off the tv and transferring the sd card file image online. You can then upload it onto your CAMcorder and watch it using the CAMcorder AS ORIGINALLY INTENDED by the creator before his demise!

I downloaded the Hdrip from the comment post of THiZZ but the file has asyncronous audio – does anyone can confirm that? At the Party scene – the audio is off by 2seconds

I had the same problem with the 720p Cloverfield rip. Unrar the files without any other application running in the background….no music listening, no watching movies…just let the computer do his unrar-work…..after this the async audio was not in the unpacked file. try it

No beginning , no middle, no end.
While an attempt at a European styled moody, artistic, true to life drama, it is a completely pathetic release.
The key drama is someone getting to his past girlfriend (who was cheating on him). I was simply praying that the camera battery would just die and I would be put out of my misery. The real ending isn’t any better though.

There have been quite a bit of nonsensical viewpoints posted so far.
First off this release should be nuked for non-compliance with scene rules for being undersized.

The Bluray tag in a release name is only meant to specify the source. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 support AVC part 10 – H.264 decoding. The issue is that both of these console do not support mkv containers. A different container or compatible image must be used then to allow playback on these machines.

Chakra is not just one group, you would know this if you had a clue. They do have power to push and encourage direction, but without the acceptance of other large families, those standards will not flourish. It’s possible that BD5 and BD9 idea make take hold, but it is a limited idea because they are targeting playback for one console, and due to size limitations of DVD9, they will never be able to add some of the cool things once re-authoring tools are developed without sacrificing quality of the main video.

What Chakra should be asking themselves is why even bother? Neither console has seen their protection measures defeated, thus you are left with a costly and time consuming process of burning media for playback.
It would be a much better choice to encourage users to build their own HTPC and stick with mkv container as it matures. Chapters can be added, you can stream mkv files over a network, and additionally you aren’t going to have sacrifice the quality of an encode to fit the space limitations of a DVD5 or DVD9. Nobody knows when burnable BluRay discs will be affordable or if the Xbox 360 will ever see a BluRay-Rom drive. Why waste time on a restricted, expensive, and futile path targeting the PS3 and Xbox 360? It is less costly and you are offered far more flexibility just targeting playback on a PC or Tvix, Popcorn Hour, Istar, etc and archiving releases on a hard drive.
My eyes lit up when I saw this post.I avoided the DVD rip and have been waiting for this for a long time now.
But now it seems the quality may not be as expected,after reading the comments.Will check the sample though.
I don’t know why this movie hasn’t been released here in India yet,when movies like Iron Man,Rambo 4 and Vantage Point have been released.
Question, Will this look better then a dvd rip if I watch it on my computer? or will it be the same thing pretty much?

Yes, there are other BluRay players besides the PS3, but the PS3 has the largest installed base and is fully compliant for 2.0 features.
This still does not address the other arguments previously stated. Additionally, PC support is limited by several factors. There is no open source player support, you must also add support for UDF 2.5 to each machine. To top it off, PC playback without burning to media requires the use of virtualization application.
Dedicated BluRay players are limited; so that means you’ll be spending lots of money on DL DVD9 media. Until the PS3 and Xbox 360 have their security measures defeated, you won’t see homebrew development which would allow for ports of XBMC. Thus networked media tank players like Tvix, Popcorn Hour, IstarHD offer better functionality over consoles and support mkv. NMT are a better choice if you can’t afford to build an HTPC. These NMT products should be considered beta hardware, because they have lots of bugs, but they are a step in the right direction.

@72 – A DVD rip is *AT BEST* 720x by ??? (often 640 or even lower). This is 1280x by ???
That means maybe TWICE the resolution – You do the math !

English subs are inside the mkv, use VLC or MediaPLayer Classic to see them.
Btw i have the .sub file but it doesnt seem to work (with RS links provided up in comm 31 (thanks)) Only a rar with the sub inside, and no usual .idx.. I wanted extra subs too :p
Does anyone have just the mkv2bluray file? I’d hate to download the whole movie just for the (presumably) small file.

Good news, Chakra has decided that scene rules no longer
apply, so give us your R5 line cr*p as retail dvdrips,
bring on your dvdshrinked DVDs, your TV cap oos or missing
a few scenes? No problem.
We have rules for a reason and if we allow one group to
ignore them we have to allow all groups to do the same.
What really annoys me is the arrogance behind Chakras
decision to release their cr*p. “We are Chakra, we want
it done this way so f*ck the rules and everyone better
bend over”. It doesn’t work this way. If you want to do
something different you FIRST change the rules and
THEN you start releasing the new way but you don’t try to
force your idea on everyone else. And if the other groups
don’t agree you are out of luck.
We will proper every single Chakra release that breaks the
rules and we encourage the other groups to do the same.
And now please excuse me, i have to rip LOTR DVD,
upscale it and release it as a Blu-Ray rip.
Don’t you just love a world without rules…
