Here we have a classic iNTERNAL rip of Citizen Kane. Considered by many to be the best film ever made, this is the story of Charles Foster Kane. I personally loved this movie and may all call it one of my favorite movies too. IMDb rates it high, 30th on the top 250. UBiK releases a nice 2cd rip. Included are the two commentaries found on the Warner release and extras!
The newspaper baron Charles Foster Kane, one of the richest and most powerful men in America if not the world, dies. A newspaperman digs into his past seeking the meaning of his enigmatic last word: “Rosebud.” He finds evidence of a child torn away from his family to serve Mammon. Grown into manhood, Charles Foster Kane becomes a newspaperman to indulge his idealism. He marries the niece of the man who will become President of the United States, and gradually assumes more and more power while losing more and more of his soul. Kane’s money and power does not bring him happiness, as he has lost his youthful idealism, as has the America he is a symbol for.

@2 Pah! LOTR is an example to behold for fantasy genre, that's true. CK is the lost art of film making and telling a simple story.

That may be a bit harsh but off all the potential greatest of all time films, this is my least favorite.
@5 Star Wars received somewhat similar criticism on initial release. Many great films are disliked by critics at first but are appreciated by the audience. Maybe it's just in the nature of a critic to have an opposing view.

@6 I'm pretty sure those reviews were not contemporaneous though. I don't have a problem with people that like the movie, I encourage people to watch and make up their own minds. For me though, the film was actually a notch below average.

It's a bit overrated though but it is still "inspiring" many filmmakers worldwide. Don't take what Bergman said too seriously. He was so diff. from his contemporary and was only trying to uphold his school/style of cinematic creativity by making this look less significant. Creative ppl do that all the time.
Ironically Orson Welles influenced europian industry more than he did Hollywood IMO. Drama+Mysrey movies made in the europe (mainly in French) are still better than most Hollywood productions in the same genre.

@Johnny666 – Absolutely agree with you, Bergman had his own style of film making. CK is, for me, no more overrated than Halloween or Psycho, they both set genre benchmarks for future film makers.
Jaydon, you have to understand that when critics (and most other people) go nuts over this movie, they're doing so while putting it in historical context.
Had it come out today, I don't think anybody would make a big fuss, but in 1941 it was extraordinary. It helped lay the foundation of modern storytelling in Hollywood films. So if you're interested in film as art/expressive medium, film history etc. (like most critics), you will get a kick out of this one.
I think the reason this film is a classic is because Welles invented a new camera lens for the film and made depth of focus obsolete at his choosing. So he was able to have events in the background being significant.
Airplane and Top Secret uses the same lens to greater effect….and their less boring.
This great movie is woefully lacking in linkage..

@chris77 – I was sincerely going to leave him alone until he/she asserted openly that Eraserhead was "boring". I don't care if you think I'm trying to be elitist, or contrived or whatever, but if you think a masterfully created cult classic like Eraserhead, an important movie even if you didn't care for the story, was "boring", then I'm comfortable in concluding you either have a short attention span, are poorly cultured, or are otherwise too unsophisticated to appreciate quality filmmaking. There's subjectivity, and then there's just being flat out unrefined.
