CIA, FBI Edited Wikipedia Entries On Iraq, Guantanamo

People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program. The changes may violate Wikipedia’s conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said on Thursday. The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches. The program allows users to track the source of computers used to make changes to the popular Internet encyclopedia where anyone can submit and edit entries. WikiScanner revealed that CIA computers were used to edit an entry on the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

A graphic on casualties was edited to add that many figures were estimated and were not broken down by class. Another entry on former CIA chief William Colby was edited by CIA computers to expand his career history and discuss the merits of a Vietnam War rural pacification program that he headed. Aerial and satellite images of the U.S. prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were removed using a computer traced to the FBI, WikiScanner showed. CIA spokesman George Little said he could not confirm whether CIA computers were used in the changes, adding that “the agency always expects its computer systems to be used responsibly.” The FBI did not have an immediate response. Computers at numerous other organizations and companies were found to have been involved in editing articles related to them. Griffith said he developed WikiScanner “to create minor public relations disasters for companies and organizations I dislike (and) to see what ‘interesting organizations’ (which I am neutral towards) are up to.” It was not known whether changes were made by an official representative of an agency or company, Griffith said, but it was certain the change was made by someone with access to the organization’s network. It violates Wikipedia’s neutrality guidelines for a person with close ties to an issue to contribute to an entry about it, said spokeswoman Sandy Ordonez of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia’s parent organization. However, she said, “Wikipedia is self- correcting,” meaning misleading entries can be quickly revised by another editor. She said Wikimedia welcomed the WikiScanner.

    This is nothing new.
Lots of people who work for senators have edited their opponents’ wiki pages. The most well known example is the Kennedy assasination allegations.
Also employees form many companies have been known to edit pages concerning the company they work for.

The so called security on Wikipedia is very weak. Every other article I read contains either faults, unreferenced sources or ‘hidden’ phrases like “Ted is gay” or “Mets suck balls”. Sure, in time these faults are found, but more are added every day. Wikipedia is fun, but can never be used as a reference in a thesis.

And their ‘code of conduct’ is one big laugh, even with this so called Wikiscanner. Just use another computer on a different location, and there you are.

No, it has never been more than a fun page. But they are trying so hard…

Mr. X, that little Mickey Mouse pic is the greatest thing I have seen today!! Awesome!! As for the article, keep up the prisonplanet stories, because, like Alex Jones says, we gotta get the word out about these freaks in the NWO, CFR, Bildeberg’s, etc…

  13. August 19th, 2007 | 03:08

Yeah.. Mickey is now my avatar.

(Back on topic!).. The article is superb dude, Thanks for the heads up Mr. X.

This is a HUGE deal and potentially VERY embarrasing to “da man”, a BIG thanks to Virgil Griffith, “Wikiscanner” is an astounding idea!!

    Hats off to all involved.

For those of you looking for the mickey mouse pic…. try google:

    August 19th, 2007 | 03:23

@ greg: for instance, if you were a popular guy, wich had a wikipedia page, and someone knew that you were downloading illegal content from the internet, and added that to your wikipedia page. Then other people would know that you were doing bad things (from a communist perspective), and they would put you in jail. But to cover it up, you would stay awake and delete that from your wikipedia page. Then you would be fine.
The same was is how the US goverment hires people to cover up their tracks and remove entries wich say that they’ve done bad things.

    August 19th, 2007 | 03:33

It’s not that they don’t want people for the government contributing, it’s that they don’t want the articles turning into a ’spin’ or ‘cover up’. The CIA sees something about them that they don’t like on there… and even if it is indeed a true fact with evidence, they pull it off. Therefore it’s not in the interest of truth anymore, but instead personal agenda. It’s the same as if Hitler (if he were alive) went on and removed all reference to Nazi Germany and the Holocost from his article simply because it was ‘bad press’; or Microsoft removing any mention there might be to security holes in Windows.

    @ Dipshit (appropriate name),

“The article is superb dude, Thanks for the heads up Mr. X.”

Where the fuck have you been? This has been on every national news program and media for days now!

BTW, the American government et al must put a lot more value in Wikipedia than I do.

As far as I’m concerned it’s like The Bible – written by numerous different sources at different times all over the place and with different agendas. Also, just like the Bible it’s okay to have a read of and take what you want from it, but for fuck’s sake don’t take it as gospel(?) and don’t live your life by it! :)

I wonder if Virgil’s got a Biblescanner, now that would be nice.

  21. August 19th, 2007 | 04:19

    Hey hibby.

    Suck my balls.

BTW… you’re not quite as smart as you think.. your bible comment is as obvious as they come.

TEH CIA AND TEH FBI WENT ON WIKIPEDIA?! dude anybody can get on, and in regards to them editing/clarifying entries in Iraq/Afghanistan, OBVIOUSLY, the government is wholly invested in the war and they too take part in the wiki madness. just move along fellas, there is no grand conspiracy here.

That’s the reason why wikipedia survives such vandals without a problem. Not the vandals win, retard.

For every 1 person taking the time to vandalise a page there are dozens of editors who can undo this with one click.

Actually, no. You could get a good night’s sleep and just let wikipedia delete such entries, as per their rules on unsourced and original research on living persons.

Looks like the british government is in on it too. records show that they edited articles on saddam, iraq, the iraq war, and various other things that would be classed as conflicts of interest.

    August 19th, 2007 | 19:06

So Wikipedia doesn’t let anyone edit an article if they are in any way related to the article? Like if the article is about that person, or their family, their school, their race, their gender, their country, the company they work for, the business they are in, etc…?

These would all be considered conflicts of interest?

The American government is just a child with toys (witch just happen to be more nukes and a bigger army then any one else) and NSA, CIA, FBI, … are its parents trying to clean up after all the mess it makes. The real story there is nothing to what they are really doing. The freedoms of the people in “land of the free” died fully with the patriot act. I don’t support terrorist but is there really was after the “the American way of life” (what a cliché) then they are the ones that should scream “mission accomplished”. At least the “new treat” of the Korean don’t have any obvious ties to America. (recap: al-Qaeda trained and outfitted by the US army and Sadam put in power by the CIA)

  44. WHO GIVES A FUCK IF THEY EDITED IT????
