Chrysler equips new cars with wireless internet

Stuck in a traffic jam and really hoping you could update your Facebook page? You soon may be able to in a Chrysler. The No. 3 of the Big Three U.S. automakers will announce a wireless Internet-access option for all 2009 models on Thursday, according to various media reports. Costs of the option — called UConnect Web — and service subscriptions have not been finalized, according to Wired magazine and the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a notion of always wanting to be connected wherever you are,” Scott Slagle, Chrysler’s senior manager of global marketing strategy, tells the L.A. Times. “There’s a demand for that.”

The cars will receive 3G cellular broadband signals, then route them to any Wi-Fi enabled devices in or around the vehicle.  Traffic-safety advocates are less than enthused. “Stop already!” Russ Rader of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety told the Times. “Clearly this is a problem. Our cars are becoming just another place to catch up on calls and now e-mail, and that’s a real safety problem.” It remains to be seen which models will get UConnect and what it will cost. Chrysler says it will be competitive with laptop wireless cards, and customers won’t be tied to long contracts.

“And this just in: a seventeen car pileup was caused today on the 401 when a driver attempted to update his Facebook page, comb his hair, and Blackberry his spouse for a shopping list, all while travelling at 130 km/h. Needless to say, this did not last very long. Six people are dead, and fourteen others are in critical condition at nearby hospitals. A spokesperson from Chrysler was unavailable for comment.”

Maybe You Blokes could realize that there is more than a DRIVER in a car. Look how popular in car dvd systems are. Also people use game consoles in their cars . Now whether its kids or The passenger, Let a woman drive and you cold play cod4 online. Watch YouTube.

With wireless internet being broadcast, you could use a laptop in the BACK or fron for anything possible

yup; this is moronic. better to spend time making cheaper lighter cars that use way less fuel…

besides, i already have a laptop with aircrack and linux - why pay for wifi?

  21. Greg
    June 25th, 2008 | 20:47

They should make it so the internet on the console doesn’t work while the vehicle is in motion. As far as other devices in the vehicle, they use them at their own risk. Chrysler should come up with some way of disabling the driver from using the internet while driving.

Chrysler used to make some really cool cars, sucks thats all gone pretty much. At least they are going to bring back the dodge challenger, hopefully it won’t cost way too much. Also chevrolet’s new camaro looks decent too. To me all these newer cars just look like boxes with wheels, its time to bring some styling back.

They should make a linux version complete with aircrack.

So if your lights are flashing on your modem have a look outside and see if theres a crysler parked up.

  26. Steven
    June 25th, 2008 | 21:34

@20, because doing that would cost the automakers billions, whereas putting wifi in a car costs hundreds. I’m sure it’ll be optional, so don’t get it, if you don’t want it.

With this & JINI (I wouldn’t trust the Microsoft driver for the steering wheel, gas, & brake) you could have your myspace friends take turns driving you to various destinations. And with the parking cameras you could simultaneously upload the trip to youtube!!! Of course there’s a practical application: “Honey, I’m drunk! Can you grab the joystick from bedroom & guide me home?”

I dont understand,,,I have a 3g phone, I have a wireless laptop in my vehicle already, that has wifi and bluetooth. I can connect my phone whihc I already pay for to my laptop and have internet anywhere. Seems to me just to be another gadget to make cars more expensive, but to me its restrictive. I have to use it in the car and what if your near a wi-fi signal and dont need to burn 3g min,,opps your going to have too. If you need internet in your car get a 3g phone service that you can use with your phone and laptop and then carry around a small high gain antenna in your car and enjoy internet on the go…

    Traffic accidents blah,blah,blah

This can actually HELP road safety just like a car radio does by broadcasting traffic data and stuff.
It could send data to the navi about collapled roads, obstactions and stuff.
And what do m.p.g’s have to do with any of this?

In a first year business class I recall the case of an RV driver who put it in cruise control and went to the bathroom. Yes, the RV obviously flipped off the road and crashed. He sued the RV company and won a new RV. His defense: “It did not say I have to at the wheel when I put cruise control on.”

I can see how wifi in your car is useful, but for the love of small children that are not yet road kill, do not give this to americans.

@ Grifter… The Charger was also brought back, I have the 6.2L hemi Superbee version and of course there is also the Jeep Unlimited, The challenger is due for release anytime soon now. For all you others theres more than just a driver in a car but most of you I guess are too young to even remember life without cellphones and the latest video game was Pong and people actually got off their 2ss and did things, and education actually was education not some pretense of acedemia of which you only need half a brain cell to graduate high school.
