Chrome: Google will introduce new browser today

Google managed to steal the march on the IT news press by announcing its forthcoming new browser whilst the US was busy celebrating Labour Day. As the rest of the world was scratching around for news because the US was shut, Google could be guaranteed to get lots of attention worldwide for its announcement. The free browser, called Chrome, is supposed to be available for downloading today in more than 100 countries for computers running on Windows. Versions for OSX and Linux are still being worked on.

Chrome has more tools for Web surfers to cloak their online preferences, creating a shield that could make it more difficult for Google and other marketing networks to figure out which ads are most likely to appeal to which individuals. Having had a look at it there is not much difference between Chrome and all the other browsers out there and time will tell where its security holes are. Quite where this will leave Firefox – which ranks as the second most popular browser, and which has been dependent on Google support – is anyone’s guess. Google recently extended its advertising alliance with Firefox through 2011.

‘As the rest of the world was scratching around for news because the US was shut’

WTF?!? I had no idea it was labour day in the US and couldn’t care less…yanks really do think the world revolves around them don’t they! The only US news anyone is interested in is the election so we don’t have to put up with the current monkey you’ve got in the sh!te house

I totally agree with Samsun, in case you didn’t know there is a world outside of the states, not that many of you knew that or care, the only reason we have to keep up with the US news is in case that dumb arse( yep, thats how it’s spelt, IT’S AN ENGLISH WORD, it means bottom, not donkey) you have in charge decide to invade us for any kind of poor excuse (WMD?, IT’S ALL ABOUT OIL). Time to broaden you horizons.

I just don’t think I could browse the Web anymore without all my FF extensions. We’ve been spoiled rotten with FF!

AdBlock Plus ALONE is something I don’t think I could live without, let alone DTA, Foxmarks, Greasemonkey, IE Tab, etc…

At this point, I just don’t see any browser topping FF beyond the “store-bought consumer” level. For us power users, we’d have to see a browser that was either backwards-compatible with FF extensions, or one that had a big enough community to emulate all the existing extensions.

And I haven’t even STARTED talking about security, stability, etc…

Im sorry #3/4, are we going to talk about this browser? or talk bad about America? im more interested about this browser…not that i disagree about the monkey in the sh!t house or that Americans sometimes think the world runs around them :)

    http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/

haha…i just wonder since i dont see a link yet of any sort to it other than a blog, if you will need google pack or whatever its called to use it. any thoughts? :)

can’t understand why people talk all this juvenile rot about Americans…they gave us the internet and have enriched the dreary cultures of the world in countless progressive and innovative ways. embrace reason and liberate your minds… if you stop living in the dark age of superstitions you might one day be worthy to utter the name and understand what it means to be “AMERICAN”

13 – ‘can’t understand why people talk all this juvenile rot about Americans…they gave us the internet’

Thats not true, its a myth that the US army or NASA or however the story goes invented the internet. It was some Swedish guy I believe…off the top of my head anyway.

Back on-topic – this will have to be pretty amazing to get people away from ff i think….most people use IE and are unlikely to change, those who want a better browser eare generally happy with ff….this is google tho so you never know

It’s good to have another browser out there. Let’s wait and see of it is any good.

Regarding the “american” crap talk, who cares? Americans are parochial, so what. I’ve lived in a dozen countries in four continents and it is the same everywhere. Humans are like that, not just americans and expecting more of americans simply means that, after all, you consider them special. They are not.

Take a look at the grand Labor Day celebrations in China, half way around the world. Or did you think it’s American? It’s a world holiday, although it’s natural for some countries in Africa to not observe it.

I copied these words from Wikipedia if you believed in Wikipedia I believed the US government was initiated the internet:

“Many people use the terms Internet and World Wide Web (or just the Web) interchangeably, but, as discussed above, the two terms are not synonymous.”

I searched for “The World Wide Web” and I found these words “The World Wide Web was created in 1989 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland and released in 1992″

“Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee OM KBE FRS FREng FRSA (born 8 June 1955) is an English computer scientist”

doesn’t matter who invented it we’re after all are human.

  26. monkey tree
    September 2nd, 2008 | 15:20

absolutely right! America didn’t invent the internet – they developed it and gave it to the world in the form of the WWW. I don’t think other countries and cultures would have been forward thinking and ballsey enough to do that…

  27. I don't get this
    September 2nd, 2008 | 15:30

    Doesn’t make sense…

“Google managed to steal the march on the IT news press by announcing its forthcoming new browser…called Chrome”

“Chrome has more tools for Web surfers to cloak their online preferences, CREATING A SHIELD THAT COULD MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR GOOGLE and other marketing networks to figure out which ads are most likely to appeal to which individuals.”

    Huh???
They’re making Chrome to shield us from them???

Actually the http protocol (the foundation of the modern world wide web) was invented by a Brit called Tim Berners-Lee in Belgium.
If it wasn’t for him everyone would still be using bbs and phoning websites manually instead of using urls

I agree with Bonksi, the Us need to knwo there is a world out there but when I was over there the news papers were full of artciles about hwo cool america is and why the world loves america.. Not bad for being the most hated country in the world.. Ahh to be deluded and I wish those yanks woudl learn that ARSE is the correct way to say it and as Bonksi said it isn’t ass….

I wrote arse once when talking to an american and they asked what it was the started laughing because it looked “funny but cute”…… The world is just topsy turvey… Also since america is in so much debt how cool is it really to be american? The world hates you and you will have to borrow money from your apparent enemies… Lets see america get the money after bush is gone…..

God I am glad I am an Aussie.

Speaking as a Brit’ living in sunny California (that’s America btw) – the Brit’s on here need to stop being antagonistic and grow t.f. up. Yep, Britain is awesome… American’s pretty darn good too, and most hate the President too… and frankly, a lot of the world does revolve around the U.S. including its economy, hence the UK and japanese markets now tanking and credit issues (and banks going under) all because the US and its people don’t balance its budget causing worldwide fear by banks. Given that California, if it were a country, would have the world’s 4th largest economy, and Southern California on its own representing what would be the world’s 5th largest economy… you gotta admit… the U.S> greatly effects the world.

Oh, and because I’m “in both camps”, I must be right. :D Thanks.

As for chrome… go to the posted link and read the comic… I don’t doubt once they’ve proven security isn’t an issue, chrome will be huuuge. :) hoorah for open source.

US invented the arpanet, darpanet from which internet the internet evloved, but WWW (world wide web) which we synonimise (is this correct word?) with the internet these days was invented by Sir Tim Burners Lee without whom we wouldn’t be using the browser and there would be no google and hence no Chrome.

This is pathetic. Most of you who are talking down on the US have never even been here, and base your mislead beliefs on us from the actions of 1 man. Believe it or not, most Americans HATE Bush! Frankly I believe your a bit jealous, otherwise you wouldn’t give us the attention. And I agree people are a$$holes everywhere you go, not just in America. If you actually bothered to come here you would know, instead of just talking sh!t behind a computer. We don’t think the world revolves around us, YOU do!
BTW, just to add some more idiotic facts.. the US didn’t contribute significantly in WW2 and we didn’t invent the internet, k? (Afghanistan did) There. Done.
    /end rant

Oh and Chrome has potential, but unless it has its own version of Adblock+ and great security.. I dont see it competing with the top 2. (I doubt they’ll put an adblock in there, it wouldn’t benefit their ad revenue.)

im using chrome right now. im quite happy with it actually. its got some very nice features from firefox, opera, etc all rolled into a very tight package. if you guys had read the comic google put together then we could realize that google is trying to put together a lot more than just a browser. but better optimized browsers in general, such as gears, individual processes in tabs. as for IE8 debuting they super awesome mode?! firefox has been able to do it for ages, and chrome has actually rolled out basically the same thing, cept earlier, opensource, and probably better in the long run.
