Christmas energy waste worth millions
Canon, a famous producer of printers, scanners and other hardware made an interesting study in the United Kingdom: The amount of energy wasted by UK office equipment left on standby over the ten-day Christmas period would be enough to roast 4.4 million turkeys, predicts hardware maker Canon. With offices deserted, devices left running will use 43.6 million kWh of electricity. In total, the energy wastage will cost UK businesses around £8.66m. In environmental terms, Canon’s research suggests that around 19,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide will be produced unnecessarily – enough to fill the same number of 25-metre swimming pools.
PCs are the worst energy wasters with the prediction half of them will be left on over the Christmas holiday, using 37.8 million kWh of energy. Other equipment will contribute with all fax machines expected to be left running. David Smith, marketing director at Canon UK, said the figures show that “businesses that don’t turn off their PCs and printers are literally throwing money away as well as damaging the environment over the festive period”. To be honest, I think this is pretty common standard in many companies, leaving their computers running all the time, no matter if there’s someone using it or not. And if we talk about the homeowners, don’t tell me you all turn off your computer every time you leave it (I know myself good enough
). And I’m not even thinking about plugging all electronic equipment when you leave for an extended weekend or a vacation…

nice bit of tech news there.
4.4 million turkeys rofl
Welcome to the wasteful society. A society that is the most unappreciative generation ever. I try to turn off the PC every time I’m going to take a long absence from it (about 1 or so) to save energy. If you want to waste energy, fine, you and I ultimately pay for it in the end. In 50-100 years when our coal and oil reserves are gone you aren’t going to be able to keep the PC on 24 hours a day.
wow, that’s interesting, martin. I’ll try to turn my computer off more often.
i hurd that if u keep ur computer on most of the time, without shutting off n on, it will last longer. any1 kno if this is tru?
Thats too bad because the power here is from hydro electric… and I leave my computer on constantly sO HA ! WASTE HAHAHA and I eat one fry then throw away the rest. THen when I use the toilet I use one roll of toilet paper instead of one tear of it ! HAHAHAH then I take one bite of an apple then trash the rest! THen I drive with my e-brake on in first gear everywhere so I produce extra C02 and pollute the air ! Then I dump all my oil down the fish-habitat drain ! ahhahahaha
But if you turn your computer off when you’re not using it, when are you supposed to download torrents?
My PC generally gets rebooted every four to six months or so other than that it’s on constantly unless there is a power cut or something.
in 50 years we use the piled up sexual energy of all nerdy virgins here and transform it to electricity. Should be enough for all plus moon and mars. God save the internet and all it‘s inmates.
got 1 server 1 gaming pc 1 download pc running 24/7 .. and a laptop ;/ ..
Ey The World Is gonna End In 2012 anyways right…… right.. might as well trash the world before we leave .. and Burt Reynolds Thats just ridiculous.
Kin, no one knows for sure when the world’s oil will run out, but the latest estimates put it somewhere around the end of this century. So relax guy, take a chill pill…

my pc is running 24/7 from the time i have adsl at home (juli 2006) some restarts and some electricity cut-outs was the only reason rebooting.
the monitor (tft) goes off after 15′ non using
dont think that the pc + adsl router costs so much electricity
+ speakers go off at night
- my laser mouse is always on (wasting re-chargeable batteries)
rezpkt and x, you sheep-shagging limey inbreds.
URL to the canon report?
what? turning my comp on and off daily and risk more wear and tear on my hard drives? fuck that shit.
