Here’s a limited film coming from very well known scene group SAPHiRE. Chop Shop is about life in Queens and a boy who fights for a better life. Not a major crowd pleaser, but hopefully some of you who like smaller (limited) films will enjoy this one. This film has gotten some smaller awards and was screened at some of the top Film festivals in the world: Cannes, Toronto and Berlin. Enjoy.

Quality:  This release looks very good. Video quality is top notch, very crisp and clear as can be expected from a group like SAPHiRE.

Alejandro, a tough and ambitious Latino street orphan on the verge of adolescence, lives and works in an auto-body repair shop in a sprawling junkyard on the outskirts of Queens, New York. In this chaotic world of adults, young Alejandro struggles to make a better life for himself and his 16-year-old sister, Isamar.

    this place doesn’t even exist anymore, the city got rid of it, and it’s not the outskirts of queens, it used to be right behind shea stadium. I heard that even though the filmmakers make it seem like a documentary, it’s completely fictional. hope its done well.

    I saw this at the Film Forum in NYC and it’s a great film, very happy to see it on RLSLOG as movies like this get lost in the shuffle especially during the summer.

    @26- where? i live nearby, everyone’s gone. The new stadium’s parking lot construction is taking up most of it. btw, unlike this film, ppl never lived there, it was simply a auto junkyard that shady businessmen (including gotti) turned it to stolen/illegal parts selling places.

    I haven’t been to Shea Stadium in a few years but I remember the area and it’s a lot like this film portrayed. I know with CitiField being built they have changed the area and it might not be there no more. I remember seeing as a kid the area and it scared me as a little kid.

    @5 and everybody who thinks that they know what they are talking about, “this place doesn’t even exist anymore” Oh yeah, I just drove by today and do everyday, I walk by, it has not been touched in years for # 34 who said he remembers seeing it as a kid, trust me it has not changed a bit in 60 years it’s still the same only ownership changed hands, the mob still runs things just less visible, Citi field is being built buts it’s on the Shea parking lot away from the chop shops, and there is a condo being built called Sky View Parc, yes Parc with a C, but again it’s away from the chop shops, the chopshops have not been touched in all these years, but now the city wants to take over, they are claiming eminent domain, but it’s being fought in court, until then the city can’t touch private property, stop commenting and saying it’s not there, go there and see it’s exactly the same as it always was,

    @28 are you blind? It’s where it always was, I don’t get what you mean by “The new stadium’s parking lot construction is taking up most of it” ?????????? the stadium is being built on the Mets parking lot, once it’s built they tear down Shea and that becomes a parking lot, what does this have to do with the chop shops? I think you want people to think you know the area, when infarct you have no clue, the chop shops are located east of Shea ACROSS THE STREET, construction has no affect on them, I went to the home opener at Shea and drove and the cops closed off the street because all the chop shop guys thought this would be a good day to protest the city’s proposed takeover, while their are shady characters involved their, there are also hard working legit people involved there, I was just there and saw the new signs they put up, which says no parts for sale, only repairs, who knows if this is real or just to keep the law away.

    I’m very excited to see this movie its great i was just down there a few weeks ago, and this place will end up being no more, the city for years have neglected to fix this area and now theyre kicking out everyone to build there condominiums to go along with the new mets cityfield. There is petitioning going on but what the city wants it will eventually get, i feel bad for the people there because theyre hard working and make enough to hve thier busness there and to open up one anywhere else in nyc will probably be very difficult so your looking at alot of business and families that will be ruined because of this

    I saw this film at the Toronto Film Fest last year and I highly recommend it. It’s fiction but it’s shot in a very natural way. Also, I believe the little boy that plays in the movie is not an actor but someone who used to work in the Chop Shop area.

    Just got back from the Mets game, got there early, asked a police officer if he knew where the auto repair shops were, he pointed to the right, so I took a walk, and low and be hold there it was to the right of the new stadium, just like the movie, it was so odd watching the movie then seeing the actual place, it looked like a third world country water puddles, I asked one of the guys there if they will be kicked out, he said there fighting it in court but it does not look good because some have already sold out to the city, he said that most of the politicians are on their side, it’s only the mayor and his people and the Mets , who want them out, I don’t know from any shady characters, to me it looked like everybody was hard at work there, most were Hispanic Mexican looking, anyway an interesting trip, if one is in NYC, take the 7 train to the second to last stop - Shea Stadium, when you go down the steps and are facing Shea, turn to your right, and walk straight past the new stadium, So once in for all I can confirm that this place does exist, and looks just like it did in the movie, how the previous posters said there is nothing there I’ll never know, maybe the day he went they moved it, like they moved the island on Lost, lol.

    Very amazing film, something truly rare these days. This is what deserves the term ‘Movie’. Highly recommended. Also it isn’t the usual
    H0llyw00d garbage, which get’s shoveled-in in a daily-base fashion.
    That’s kind of obvious to notice, huh?
