China completely banned YouTube

China appears to be blocking all access to YouTube. Now, why in the world would it do something like that? I’ve got some theories. First, though, the facts: YouTube use from China started dropping off the map sometime Monday night, with traffic nearly reaching a standstill by Tuesday morning. Google (which owns YouTube) has confirmed the apparent ban, though its staff is not certain of the cause. “We do not know the reason for the blockage, and we’re working as quickly as possible to restore access to our users in China,” a spokesperson says. Google does believe the Chinese government knowingly cut the access. The spokesperson, however, questions why officials wouldn’t have just blocked a specific video, as they’ve done before, rather than nixing the entire site.

YouTube has been banned by other countries as well for allowing users to upload and share videos which foreign governments in Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan and Turkey found embarrassing to their political regimes. Google is working to restore access to the site for Chinese citizens. This is not the first instance in which Chinese users have been unable to access the video sharing site. China blocked YouTube during the Tibet riots in March 2008. During that time protesters were burning shops and vehicles in an attempt to protest the Han Chinese influence. The riots left 19 dead.

    Can you say……. Tibet?

Pretending there isn't a problem, and squashing everyone who thinks there is one, is the way to go if you're Chinese.

We can't have Youtube showing the world how Tibetans are treated by the Chinese government, so let's block the Tube.

There is NO problem in Tibet. More ppl die every year in the US due to race wars.

Tibet is a very calm and peaceful place. However the Han influence is on the rise for sure. That is what happens in every big country having multiple language and culture.

More ppl die in NY in half a year than in Tibet in a whole year. What about that?

You can find even more shocking vids of racial violence in the US if you know how to search. What about the clash in the Anti-WTO protest on Seattle? What about the living skeletons in Africa who are suffering from AIDS and cannot eat for weeks at times? Tibetans are much well off compared to their atrocities.

@15 Google does NOT have the power to influence any government. They and others may think they do but governments have the power to abolish and ban, unlike Google. If the Chinese government wants to ban YouTube it's their right to do so. We in the west may not like how they do things but we're not in China. Google's only interest in restoring service to China is revenue based, like all capitalist companies. "Do no evil"? Yeah right.

  27. Moshster
    March 25th, 2009 | 18:43

@12 Losing a sub continent of YouTube users won't necessarily improve the performance of the service. YouTube content is delivered using technology that serves up content from the nearest server to the user.

Tibet has as much right as any land mass to declare sovereignty. China will be damned if they let that happen. In regards to the post about race wars in the US, I can only assume you are talking about the citizens fighting with the invaders. If you want to call Mexican vs Sovereign US Citizen a race war, I think I'm fine with that. America's only evils have and continue to be not following the US constitution.
The fundamental principal of the US is(read as supposed to be) personal independence and responsibility. The farther any nation moves from that idea the closer to fascist/communist dictatorships they will be.

Deal with it, China continues to silence it's countrymen and prevent education.

In the end, you can blame China, but what about your government??

    >>"Where politic start, honesty do stop"

  33. WorldCitizen
    March 25th, 2009 | 20:14

Oh no – here comes all of the Chinese apologists. They seemingly have no problems with China restricting free speech and want to blame all the world's problems on the US. As usual, they are incapable of accepting blame for their own problems and want to point the finger elsewhere instead of examining their internal problems.

We have people being murdered and abused all over the world, but all of these totalitarian regimes are ignored by the same Chinese apologists, who really don't CARE about the "Earth being raped," because the Chinese are one of the biggest environmental abusers as well.

Do you notice how these same apologists refuse to criticize China (as if they were brainwashed or government stooges)? They turn a blind eye to its problems and have even found a way to try blaming the YouTube banning on the US! They just want to find fault with the US, who they hate, all the while caring nothing about the many problems around this planet.

    They are hypocrites.

Also, the McCarthy hearings were over a a half century ago, and it paled in comparison to the Chinese Cultural Revolution which led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Chinese, including many intellectuals. The US has never had a purge in the same manner that you saw in both Communist, authoritarian USSR and the People's Republic of China.

America doesn't have have to pretend to be the "Land of the free," which is why millions of immigrants want to move to the US every year, including many Chinese citizens.

Yes, America still has issues, but it works to fix them: it doesn't merely try to ignore in the same manner as the Chinese government. Or its seemingly blind and ignorant defenders.

  34. Auditor
    March 25th, 2009 | 20:27

it's simple. the Chinese government doesn't have a Guantánamo Bay into which it could detain operators of YouTube, who are supporting anti-Chinese propaganda backed by the USA government.

It may appear that USA is attacking China on the basis of political differences, but that is naive and superficial. The true cause is the Aryan encroachment on Chinese people that has been going on for hundreds of years. They have attempted all kinds of dirty tricks and there's no reason to believe they'll stop any time soon, or ever.

  35. TruBlu
    March 25th, 2009 | 20:31

"The US has never had a purge in the same manner"??

Tell that to the real native americans, Vietnamis, Afghans and Irakis; US only did that in a larger global scale and still continueing to do so.

"the McCarthy hearings were over a a half century ago" but that does not reduce its evilness.

"Tibet has as much right as any land mass to declare sovereignty." Will you be able to say that if a US state demands freedom using the same logics? Tibet is a part of China.

How can you possible compare U.S. racial violence with those happening in china?

You are an absolute ignorant fool.

Racial violence in the U.S. is NOT supported and implemented by the government. It is problem here MAINLY because we all have freedoms to choose. We can own guns if we want. The government can't tell us how to live out lives. As a result, many choose a path of destruction. That is one of the many bad sides of freedom. But freedom is still worth it nonetheless.

Think people are missing th epoint here.. political crap aside. fact is chinese gouverment are beating and killing people who are tied up and are no threat. basic disregard of human rights.

Doesnt matter if more people die due to racial conflicts in the US, it aint the US gourverment doing the killing is it.

maybe if you americans go ahead an drop another "FatMan" atom bomb on them, preferably on the chinese gourverments doorstep, give them a taste of there own medicine. if the people from tibet have no human rights, then neither should the chinese gourverment. saying that, i think any country with a gouverment who is compltly incapable of enforcing basic human rights shold be over run or gouverned by someone who is capable.

but hey, thays just my opinion.

  54. Michael

Believe me it is the indisputable truth that non-threatening ordinary people have always been massacred.

With this in mind, let's annihilate with extreme prejudice all the chinese government, tibetan government, german government, iraqi government, french government, us government, english government and the likes.

The old needs to be destroyed so that the new can replace it. Change is certainly good so that more people can have their perfect human rights and happily be alive.

"Racial violence in the U.S. is NOT supported and implemented by the government."

It was, until very recently, before MLK Jr started to raise voice. KKK is still secretly active in ALL states and don't tell me to believe that is possible without covert political support. And we all know what the G men did to the Muslims during Bush regime in the name of national security. 100s of ppl are still missing after they were arrested for just being Muslim and in some cases just for wearing turban even thoigh they were non-muslim.

@WorldCitizen: No other country has a more vocal and active govt. sponsored anti-china policy than the meddlesome US. So obviously any argument trying to defend China will eventually also end up showing faults of the US. At least China does not have an agency like CIA that is killing anyone anywhere across the globe who is a threat to "American Interest".

And the silly trick of saying "Oh, all aour faults were in the past, we have learned our lessons and we are better now" is ridiculous. 50 years later Chinese ppl will also be able to say the same thing.

People's Republic of China (Mainland China) 1949–present is a very newly formed country and like the history of every major country be it US, UK, France, Russia or India, China has also been going through some violent phases in the recent past. But the present administration is very open minded and is gradually opening up even more. It is
not a totalitarian draconian regime anymore as the US would like it to be.

With the burden of having world's largerst polulation to bare on its shoulder, it has shown remarkable porgress in such a short period of time and if this continues, very soon it will topple the US centric world order – and that is why US fears China most. Bcoz US knows that once that happens, there will be no way to reclaim its posoition as the whole world knows China is not a global bully like US is.
