    Why would anyone want to use israeli software (Checkpoint)? Guaranteed backdoors. They are also buying up allot of security and financial information companies which all is very suspicious to me.

    Has this product improved? last time I used it slowed down my pc and my browsing on the internet. has anyone else given this a try? Thanks for not posting first. you are a good man john.

  5. July 16th, 2008 | 04:51

    @ hacker1 I got 8 GB ram so it can’t slow me down. :lol:

    I think it wont slow your PC too much. Only when you make deep scans -it takes longer.

    @3 They have different companies just make a google search on “checkpoint acquisitions” and about the financial info I remember I saw it on a tech news site it has to do with UK they bought up some company that sold tax information or such.

    Anyway, its a Israeli/Belarus (Little White Russia) roots company. That should signal somewhat.

    @ Nikola

    if you have 8gb of ram – u must use a 64bit OS right? unless you are running windows server?

    but zone alarm doesnt work on 64bit OS so the whole 8gb doesnt help – although 4 of those 8gb would.

    sorry im just really bored

    I have been using ZoneAlarm for as long as i can remember, and i am very happy with it.
    I have tried other security suite products and i think this is one of the best especially the firewall component (net and OS). Highly recommend!!

    @2
    I dont think thats true..

  10. July 16th, 2008 | 05:19

    @ mikey On this Pc yeah. On my other PC I run Vista 32 bit. You are right Vista 32 bit can’t use that much ram. You can have them, but Vista 32 bit will not be able to use it. Vista 64 bit addresses ram better. But Vista 64 bit has flaws too. Nobody is perfect …… :-(

    @ nikola ha as soon as I typed it I realised it was a pointless comment. work is very boring.

    On-topic I use this product and enjoy it – its great to be able to deny programs internet access and gives a good description on what is attempting to access network and internet. I personally dont find memory usage to be an issue, unless it is scanning.

  12. July 16th, 2008 | 05:36

    Best damn app in this category! I have only 512MB RAM ;) and it does NOT choke system. And yes there is a Vista only version available (32/64) that has not been updated to this version number yet.
    The AV & antispyware modules are quite reliable. And they have no conflict with Spybot. I was already using this as this release is a few days old. Thanks Nikola for placing it here for everyone to use.

    1000% recomended! :D

    I was using just ZoneAlarm for years from v5 i guess and lemme tell ya its just got worse and worse since CheckPoint acquired it. They r full of bugs, vista versions sux big time. I was having a goddamn slow speed of page load (it took 5 sec just to start loading google or any other page) and guess what it only occured after installing ZoneAlarm. Well maybe it was the need for a change so i moved to Comodo and never had a prob since then.

    You honestly believe that there is a country, any country for that matter, whom one and only sole purpose is to do stuff that suite the conspiracy you plot in your head????
    Oh yeah, I forgot, Israel has solved all of it’s issues. There’s peace with all the neighboring countries, the education systems are perfect, no corruption or hypocrisy in the government, no poor people. everything’s perfect. so now that whole country can concentrate on world domination, right?

    @37 Marshall. Get Revo Uninstaller (yeah, it’s free)… might as well get the portable version, then you don’t need to install it. If your Kaspersky is uninstalled, install it back. Then use Revo Uninstaller and select the mlast option i.e. the deepest uninstall possible. Revo will go check everything related to your Kaspersky installation (or any other) and then you check the stuff you want to remove. Just read the instructions very carefully, especially about what you check relative to the registry entries.
    Then you should be rid of the bits and pieces that are still causing you problems. Personally, I use Revo to uninstall everything, every time. Takes longer, but it’s worth it.

    @53

    You are getting ahead of yourself in your accusations. Where did I talk about world domination conspiracy. There is less sinister reason for this, just as why US and the letter agencies want to know all of my bank transactions and credit card information and so on they might have their reasons too, especially as israel/usa is very known for doubtful methods of gathering intelligence.

    I rather not give out my privacy if I can help it and that is why I stay away from security products made by certain countries. And checkpoint is starting to look way suspicious too me.

    Im guessing but you would probably not use russian/chinese encryption software to protect your privacy or business data, right? Remember the new wlan encryption standard and the chinese?

    “For years, firewall wizards such as Marcus Ranum had speculated on the existence of a Mossad backdoor in the Israeli-owned Check Point. This episode confirmed the fact that such backdoors did actually exist, whether intentionally or not, and were able to be successfully exploited in the wild.”

    You can search the web for more information it it has to do with years 1999-2002 and NSA/DOD.

    There is also a great research document on the web when it comes to exploiting FW-1 and own it TOTALLY. Its patched now thought since it “came to light”.

    Excerpt:

    “According to the NSA, two files with IP addresses in ISRAEL ‘could provide access to the firewall via SNMPv2 mechanisms.” Checkpoint’s reply indicated that the code was dead code from Carnegie Mellon University and the files were QA testing data that was left in the final released configuration files.”

  60. Aru
    July 16th, 2008 | 11:57

    Just a dumb question:

    Why should I trust their software when even their “best friend” does not? And how come checkpoint is still in the security business or has not changed its name, because the excuses for this backdoor is above lame. They actually mean that the missed to remove dead code that gave the israelis with certain ip addresses complete control over a firewall that is used to protect DoD and other government agencies and not only in the US? Giving israel the upper hand by mistake? You dont think the israeli government uses their products and audits it too?

    thanks, trying my best to give info and not sound like a nutcase =)

    Found the research paper, and its interesting also im wondering why they explicitly enable stack execution from some applications while the system has it disabled and is actually trying to protect against stack based execution which is basically useless unless you have some cool demo or really want to dare that your and all the software it is depending on is not exploitable.

    http://www.pentest.es/checkpoint_hack.pdf

    Just to kick those lying down:

    I don’t know what is wrong with companies they seem to ignore security matters or maybe its just that their “networking” skills within the company to relay information to the necessary parties to examine does work. But its is really embarrassing for a security company to ignore calls from security experts about their system being owned. Consider cisco doing this (or have they?).

    “CheckPoint was first contacted on 19-03-07. Since them many other attempts were done
    and at last we were redirected to our country –Spain-. We contacted the representative of Check
    Point at our country and many approaches attempts were made. The feedback was very
    poor and after months of waiting we decided to release this work to the community.”

    Yeah, really a company to trust, right?

    @Marshall

    You can get an uninstaller tool directly from Kaspersky. Just go to their site and check the support forums for a link. It is advised to run this tool when uninstalling any of their products. Symantec has a similar tool on their site for Norton products. AV programs are designed to be difficult to uninstall to thwart malware attempts to disable them. Always best to use a removal tool from the manufacturer if one is available.

  70. Aru
    July 16th, 2008 | 13:06

    @71

    In case your wondering, your not being funny. They have a record, israelis and checkpoint and their attempts. Also companies do have loyalties, especially at war. I doubt any american or israeli company would not do as their governments said unless it would be suicide, or suicide not doing it. Already forgotten the FISA act?

    According to checkpoint themself “100% of Fortune 100 companies use Check Point security solutions”. That is very tempting…just as tempting as getting a NSA backdoor in windows, but you still need to get past the firewall.

    According to security expert that did the penetration testing:

    “I have been in contact with Check Point products since 1999. Honestly I should tell that until now I always loved CheckPoint, basically for its friendly user interface and its power, infinite features, etc. After the results of that R+D work I’m a bit disappointed about its security. I think that right now, CheckPoint is a good choice for most companies, but right now I won’t recommend it to companies with very high security requirements like banks, government, insurance, etc. If you need very high security requirements you need a strong and reliable firewall. A strong reliable firewall must resist a simple buffer overflow. A strong reliable firewall must not break down with a simple penetration testing and showing it is vulnerable at its very root”

    Yeah but then, right after reading that document (http://www.pentest.es/checkpoint_hack.pdf), which firewall should we use ? Is it risky to only use Windows FW ? (I don’t really care about outbound connections, I already got enough security apps to prevent malwares).
    Nowadays everyone talks about leaktests, outbound protection, but no one cares about inbound protection anymore ; that document clearly points out ZA’s vulnerabilities on that topic…

    Good review/testing of anti-viral software at http://www.av-comparatives.org/. Look at their forums for more info too.

    Not all is as it seems to be.

    @77

    That doc is about a different product, enterprise stuff nothing most people would be running at home. I myself dont use any firewall except windows built-in but im not a poweruser and I dont run that many “unknown” or cracked apps from my windows box. So it should be alright if you have AV/AS and are careful about what you download.

    Windows FW can be a security risk as it is probably the most common firewall used, and been examined thoroughly by most hats and therefor there are most probably unknown exploits against it but also probably local side though. But I would not be surprised if there is some remote exploit that makes it shutdown itself because of packet parsing buffer something. But with a functioning AV/AS and security patches you should be pretty safe. I do it that way. But for higher security you probably should get a different firewall.

    By judging form the comments here I guess people like AVG some after tried other security products. But I dont know I myself use AVG AV since a while back. And previously used Kaspersky but dumped it since it costs money. Both have AV/AS/FW suites and both costs money. These are the two I would consider and I personally lean toward kaspersky if im paying for the software. But it was a while ago I had some expirence with kaspersky AV and never used either FW.

    Get names of products you consider using and do some google searches on a few keywords like pros, cons, problem, review, slow, fast, hog. Not all of them since that would be a waste of time but that is just to give you an idea. Do that to get an idea of what people think of the product, good or bad, resource hog or not.

    Thanks for your reply. However, I don’t really trust reviews, users testimonials, etc; these are so biased and don’t reflect how good and secure a firewall is. Right now I’m satisfied with my current setup (being avira, light & free + windows fw), I just wondered if I’m taking any risk or not ; you know, big brands such as Checkpoint/McAfee tend to scare you, pretending hackers can intrude your computer at any moment unless you install their products …

    I used Zonealarm for years without problems but all of a sudden it started to interfere with uTorrent and nothing I tried worked, so in the end I had to give up and go for Comodo. No problems ever since!

    Anybody want to recommend a 64 bit virus protection software. I use super anti-spyware pro along with norton 64 bit corporate and comodo for my firewall. Heard norton uses a lot of memory. Also comodo has anit-virus…is that enough?

    I hope the exploit reveals that it cannot escape virtual machine (not the java type), if so guess I wont be having to leave java completely and most untrusted apps.

    Thanks for sharing this great app. I can highly recommend this. I’ve used zonealarm security suite for years. Best package I’ve tried (better than Norton & McAfee). Best rated firewall. Great Anti-virus & Anti-spyware from Kaspersky. Excellent anti-spam protection. Nice basic parental controls. Haven’t noticed any slow down unless scanning.

    I think zonealarm is the only company compatiable with Nod32 AV, That might of changed now since these firewall companies don’t seem to want to add support for any kind of AV. These comapnies need to get their act together if they expect people to want to buy this crap. I use to use Outpost Firewall the time cause it seemed to kickass, but now I can hardly find a Antivirus that is compatiable with it. I tried AVG, Kaspersky, bitdefender etc and they all get conflicts with it.

    I’ve used this for a while and I like it, like been said only slows when scanning. I started off with AVG free and got riddled with virii, tried NIS (which PAID for!! DOH!)n got to watch hundreds of e-mails start sending themselves off to people I didn’t know….and firewall n AV remotely disabled several times…
    One thing I’ve noticed with this tho is PeerGuardian2 blocks this calling home at regular intervals, it’s not the AV updating that works fine, I disable all other contact options, defense net, product update,junk filter(extra service running-no thanx) etc. so what’s it trying to do?
    Don’t bother me much cos there’s only media stuff on pc anyway, all I use it for.
    Oh, and never needed to register it to update it

    Back to phucking up the country….

    Not a bad piece of software, does exactly what it should do. My only problem with this software is that is slows down your computer on first boot, also it uses way too much system resources.
    Used it for a couple years but eventually switched to Outpost Security Suite Pro.
    See how your AV / Firewall got rated, very interesting test results.

    @ Aru,

    From what is told about the new Intel “exploit”, There will be a whole new breed of Viruses/Adware ect ect blah blah (yea we’ve heard it all before) that can completely bypass all software and root itself directly.

    Guess there gonna have to start working on a Micro Code patch. AMD isn’t the only people making ERRATA blunders and INTEL did infact release some of the same errors as AMD on a few of its former Duo’s.

    @102,

    There are microcode patches but the manufacturers do not distribute them and it will probably suck if you have a computer 2+ since no one will probably care to distribute these low-level patches for them, some seem not to care about system less than 2 years old. The only hope is that intel will start distributing patches them self independent of operating system for us to patch hardware.

    Also I heard not all ERRATA can be patched away and therefore needs hardware replacement which is bad news for all of us as it will be costly. It is a bit scary that you now not theoretically cannot trust your hardware but really you cannot trust your hardware it is even below the BIOS level and other low-level firmware (ethernet firmware…).

    This sucks!

    Sure does. Im sure this one will be patchable as Kaspersky would not leak the info if it isn’t worth any monetary gain. XD

    He should be showing it soon enough and show how the attack effects all OS’s and the breeds of viruses/spyware that it will enable to bypass any software…. BOOO Kaspersky…

    He says he is doing it to show that CPU creators should remove all ERRATA and stop being lazy, but we know its for some quick cash.

    Thanks nolimits for the tips. I also come across this problem recently.
    I found that, for existing installations, you can also use this method (no need to reinstall):
    - use keygen to install a new license
    - reboot and enter safe mode
    - run cmd
    - run “attrib -h +r c:\windows\system32\zllictbl.dat”
    - run “attrib +h c:\windows\system32\zllictbl.dat”
    - reboot again and boot normally
    It will keep the existing license from being updated.
