Chaka Khan – Funk This (2007)
There’s no need to remind many of you of this name: Chaka Khan may be unknown to MySpace generation, but it will surely be pretty familiar to older of you. The lead singer of R&B band Rufus releases another new album now and you can get it with an amazing 2 month advance.
Say the name “Chaka” and most folks in the know instantly think of a woman who has made an indelible and lasting impression on the music scene of the past three decades. First, as the lead singer of the massively successful R&B, funk and pop band Rufus, then as a solo artist in her own right who has influenced an entire generation of female vocalists (think Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Maysa among others). Like Aretha, like Joni, like Tina, a first name will do. For there’s only one Chaka, woman of fire, possessed of a powerhouse, unforgettably distinctive trademark vocal style who sings with unrelenting passion, honest emotion and authenticity; no matter what the song, you can count on Chaka to deliver with realness, every time.

Seldom has that been more evident than on the aptly-named Funk This, in some ways a return to her musical roots with Rufus, a glorious collaboration with the super hitmaking team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. It’s the album that many a Chaka fan will instantly say they’ve been waiting for, a tough’n'earthy showcase for the gritty, in-your-face sound that first attracted the solid and loyal audience that have been with Chaka “through the fire” (also the title of her autobiography), through the ups and downs and ins and outs of a career filled with accomplishment, achievement and, as she herself admits, its share of highs and lows.
The iconic singer says it best: “This album may remind people of my early Rufus albums because I’m in a similar ’soul space’. I’ve been on a little journey in the last few years, finding Yvette again,” she notes, referring to her birth name. “I went through a period of being insecure. I’m walking a different path now. I’ve changed. This album is different from any other album I’ve recorded because it reflects what I’m about, who I am now.”

Yes,she surely leaved a BIG impression like many others in the music world as Flash & The Pan and so on.Guess the My Space generation have a lot to explore and thanks for the post.
Thanks tons for this post Martin.
One of the (if not the)outstanding female voices I have heard in my 36 years on the planet. Her track “Ain’t Nobody” is one my all time favourites.
She may be a bit older now, but I bet her voice could still outstrip today’s top vocalists. It’s a pity she has went down the slightly cheesy ‘Romantic Ballad/Duet’ road a lot in her time, instead of say, doing what Jocelyn Brown did with Nuyorican Soul, etc. I’m hoping this album does what it says and goes back to her earlier Rufus/solo style.
Anyway – Superb, thanks again.

The same label, Burgundy, will be attempting to revive Donna Summer’s career with a new album next spring.
Well, Well, Well, I have been with Chaka for the last 30 years of my life and Lord knows I love her with all my heart, but this project didn’t do if for me. I love “Back in the Day” But what can you say Chaka could sing nothing and we all would love her just the same. This project take me back to “The Woman I Am” when Chaka was finding herself (so was I) Chaka vocals are ALWAYS ON POINT, the songs them self I didn’t care for. I really don’t know what Chaka wants me to feel or be on this project. Maybe I’m really sad that Airf Martin is gone. Would have been great for Chaka to team up with all members of Rufus and maybe some Rod Temperton on the lyrics…..CD
I’ve been a fan of Chaka’s every since her first album (or rather the first album that she was on) – and I do mean ALBUM, not “CD”… Looking at her, and looking at this release, it looks like it’ll be her fattest moment yet… err, I mean “phattest”… ok, I DID mean “fattest”.. c’mon, that chicks head is so big that’s all they could fit in the picture… Big, Fat, Loud, Screaming woman – WE KNOW YOUR THERE! We can’t MISS your fat ass! STOP SCREAMING, YOU FAT FREAK!
Gotta love that Chaka Khan.
Ok,everyone. I’ve heard the entire CD. IT’s AWESOME. IT takes you back to VINTAGE CHAKA. My favorite song on the album is ONE FOR ALL TIME! My god, I cry when I hear it everytime. WAtch out world, CHAKA IS BACK!!!!
“One for all time” is the best track on the album.
“Angel” is a close second and “You belong to me” was a nice little throwback with Michael McDonald.
But yeah, “One for all time” is scintillating, especially the middle of the song after the chorus where Chaka’s voice soars and growls with verve and swagger. So damn hot.. It’s a shame this current lost generation has no connection to QUALITY music, so this album is wasted on them. But the rest of us can appreciate it.
