CES: 1-inch thick wireless plasma from Panasonic

The epic battle between plasma and LCD manifests itself in numerous ways–Hz oneupsmanship, contrast ratio and viewing angle specs, lifespan claims–but until now, panel depth was a frontier comfortably dominated by LCD, with ultrathin models like the Hitachi UT37X902. Now Samsung and Panasonic aim to claim that frontier themselves, the latter with the new inch-thick Z1. Panasonic’s press material uses the term “Z1 series,” which indicates to us that the company is planning other screen sizes with inch-deep panels. But for now the only size the company sees fit to announce is the 54-inch TC-P54Z1, due in summer for an undisclosed, but surely sizable, chunk of change.

Thin panels pose a number of design quandaries, such as where to connect the cables. Panasonic solves the problem by supplying a separate AV box, with a tuner and connections like HDMI and component-video, which streams audio, video, and control signals to the panel wirelessly. The company uses a 60GHz millimeter wave radio system that sounds similar to the one employed by LG for its wireless displays, and like LG claims the ability to transmit full, uncompressed 1080p video. Aside from Digital Cinema Color, the Z1 incorporates all of the features of the thicker V10 models, including improved 24p compatibility, VieraCast; the power-saving, high-contrast, NEO PDP panel; “infinite black;” and a 600Hz sub-field drive.

    wireless?
1080p Full HD content over a wireless connection has been problematic for a while now, even the new 802.11n networks can't handle it.
Must be using Amimons WHDI interface then, and aside from being nifty as hell, the range of the transmitter will be limited, so you'll still have cabling through yr room (shame that, sounded so good!).

Well you will still need to plug it in somewhere so its not really wireless.

    Too bad it's plasma.

Still waiting on OLED. I need something that can match my CRT without weighing 50kg.

Den, the 802.11x standard isn't the only wireless technique out there. 802.11n uses 5ghz band to be able to maintain the speed and quality needed. Panasonic uses 60ghz which is the big reason why they can transfer that amount of data and in the speed required.

once we have machines that can manipulate atoms like star treks replicators then we will be able to download hardware. because everything will simply be an assembly code.

    This made my day. :)

Whats the huge deal in that TV??? Guess someone doesn´t have 3 inches of clearance at their living room????

What´s the point of paying 3 times more for the same image quality?

    Dumb technology

"Computer(replicator), I would like a Core i7 965, 12GB RAM 300GB SSD" lol. But on topic, still waiting on Laser TV or OLED. Still prefer CRT compared to LCD(picture quality wise).

    @ 15. poppy

I doubt it doesn't have at least a power cable.

I'll be impressed when someone releases a 50" with the thickness of an iTouch.

I'll be impressed when the touch can do half the things an analog clock can do.

Idiot. You want a battery powered screen? Have fun! Your logic amuses me.

And feel free to express your anger at my comment, you're still an idiot!

For the $ this is nothing special. The new Plasma tech that this TV and the new Vizio's carry blow away any LCD on the market. Everyone would complain about the life span on Plasma's but, this Plasma tech has a full color life of 60,000+ hours compare to the old ones of about 15,000. Which means if you have it on for 12 hours a day it will last for 14 years (full color)!! By then you'll be upgrading anyway

    @ 12 Chael

    That’s sounds cool….

Is there a release date for such technology?, as I need to download a new Washing machine, as mines broken down (won’t spin properly) :-(

    Thanks in advance…;-)

    @ Den

Actually, they're using WirelessHD technology – Amimon operates on 5Ghz, while SiBEAM, the chip provider for WirelessHD, uses 60Ghz.

    Wireless?

How are they getting power to the set, beaming that in too? Come with its own mini-tokomak?

This obsession with thin is ridiculous, appearance over performance. I'd like a monitor that does blacks, has the viewing angles and contrast levels that exceeds those of a bog simple CRT.

SED, OLED, FED all look like more promising technologies than LED and Plasma

Its' 2008! Where is my personal jet pack?

    @wBuddha

    It's 2009 friend.
According to Micheal J. Fox, I should have my hoverboard in 6 years.

I'd love to see the Star Trek replicators, unfortunately, I don't see anything happening like that for at least another millennium. The amount of controlled/precise scanning and atom manipulation in a safe way would take an abnormal amount of research. (Unless aliens come down and give it to us for free.) Not to mention, that a machine like that would ruin the economy.

Imagine our world right now where anyone had access to a holodeck and a replicator. Free food, free stuff, and your own version of a Utopian society. No one would leave their homes again. LOL.
