    I watched this on TV. It was very entertaining all round. It showed the many, many benefits of CCTV and will hopefully serve to show the nay-sayers of this country (those who protest against CCTV) how valuable the technology is. Or are they still afraid “Big Brother” is watching them every second of every day?

    people will complain that the police are never around when needed, take too long to show up etc.; then those same people complain that big brother is watching and it is an invasion of privacy (remember, they watch you when you are in public, not in private).

    When faced responsibly, and not just seen as a malicious act by the government to spy on citizens, this is a very useful tool. If you are paranoid about big brother watching, you are most likely exactly the person that big brother is there to watch.

    Great show!

    I think you might find this article (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/02/our-paradoxical-attitudes-towards-privacy/index.html) rather interesting — “Our Paradoxical Attitudes toward Privacy”.

    @3- its your psychotic thinking that makes this invasion of our privacy by corporations and governments even easier…its the whole “well I ain’t doin’ nuthin’ sos’ I gots’ nuthin’ ta werry about” attitude. Well, I’ve got one thing to say to that, a bit of an adaptation:

    “When they came for the terrorists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a terrorist.

    When they locked up the Protesters,
    I remained silent;
    I was not in protest.

    When they came for the mexicans, the poor
    I did not speak out;
    I was not mexican, nor poor.

    When they came for uploaders, the pirates, the p2p users
    I remained silent;
    I’m just a leech.

    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out.

    …get the idea? TBH The taking-over of our public spaces and creating nothing but linear streets, pathways, and roadways (wheres all the sidewalks anyway?)…its all designed to keep you buying, consuming, and DOING WHAT THEY DEEM “PROPER” (consuming goods/services, working, driving in between those activities ONLY). Its just good ol’ patriarchal xenophobia (a need to fulfill delusions of manliness through being fearful and hateful/violent toward anything they cant SEE (ie cameras/CCTB) or CONTROL….

    …I think we need more unseen, and uncontrollable spaces- there are some things in life that are better a mystery, and I dont want mfk’ers seein me j3rk-0off!

    no. 2 – OMG…

    “Or are they still afraid “Big Brother” is watching them every second of every day?”

    umm.. that’s what this show is about, CCTV watching you from a control room and recorded 24/7 – someone watching your every move.. and then randomly, footage used without consent for reality show. Sounds pretty BB to me.

    @26: exaggerate much? Just another teenage “rebel” spouting catchphrases like “police state” all over the internet. Fight the machine!

    Here’s the inside scoop, you doomsayers: when you leave your home, you forefeit all rights to privacy. With the correct means, anyone can see you, and you can see anyone – and quite rightly so. I won’t make assumptions as to what kind of lives you people live, but I’m personally not worried that my image is recorded every second I’m outside. What are they going to do, watch me do my shopping? Watch all the kids sneak home a few minutes past their curfew and send the damning evidence to their parents?

    How can anyone possibly argue that public CCTV is a bad thing? When you’re a victim of a crime you’ll change your tune. When there’s not enough solid evidence because there was no camera to record your attacker on, you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself if they walk free.

    The kind of logic the “anti-CCTV” crowd use is seriously flawed. They argue that our freedom is being taken away. Freedom to do what? Perform crimes without being seen? Move without being easily traced? Maybe for the thiefs and secret agents out there, this could be a problem. But I’m just a guy who likes browsing the internet and going out for work and food. Of course, if we’re all to move freely then surely we must banish security lights? Alarm sensors? Streetlamps? They all hinder our “freedom”, as well.

    The bottom line: CCTV is good. Only sensationalist fools give a shit if they’re seen in public.

    No worries, cyberman MIT grad has had our backs since the 80’s. Coined the word Sousveillance-(surveilled from the perspective of a participant in a society under surveillance)..
    Look it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sousveillance Anyone that’s concerned with CCTV/big brother(which you should be) check out Steve Mann also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Mann

    Happy Slapping springs to mind on this. I think CCTV is great but does not make me feel any safer walking the UK streets, it’s takes a few seconds to stab someone and kill them, CCTV will not prevent this so the who “big brother” issue remains IMO

    “It’s not like the police are going to come find you if they see you on camera smoking weed, the cameras are there to catch people who commit serious crimes.”

    I’m sorry to say, you’re wrong about this. CCTVs are frequently used to fine people for dropping litter, sex in public and letting their dogs foul on pavements.

    Basically, the police force of today are hustlers and if they can see an easy buck to be made, they’ll grab it.

    If CCTVs were used to prevent serious crimes, I’d be happy to sacrifice my privacy, but people who get attacked on CCTV rarely (if ever) get rescued from the attack. They just appear on TV shows like this.

    I’m a CCTV operator, i’m pretty sure many of u doubter’s are not or never have been therefore arent really educated to criticize! I browse the streets when i’m working as if i wld be when i’m walking them, only looking for anything that deviates, after 31 days or less it vanishes for good unless saved as part of a criminal investigation. I know it isnt a perfect system but what is. Only paranoid people are concerned about these cameras, speak to ure council there’s ways to obtain any footage taken of u. We’ve got strict laws to obide to & are all licensed. I’ve seen innocent people get seriously hurt, Old ladies marched to cashpoints so thugs can take money from them, helped vulnerable people get found. & I’m passionate about my job. It’s very rewarding. so there!

    @52 you are of course assuming that the government is not, and in the future (most important) will not be, corrupt or fascistic.

    it is a fact of history that governments, when unchallenged, and given dominance over basic human rights (like privacy for example), become tyrannical and fascistic.

    i’m happy you have a job – just don’t be blind, toe the party line, and beat the drum for the nwo.
