The same can be said about the music scene of Germanys second largest city: While there is a lot of buzz in the media about creatives being envious to the capital, the music scene, especially in the electronic fields, has been thriving here in the last few years. Hafendisko, the Hamburg based new sub label by hfn music, reknowned for their releases by Trentemoeller and Kasper Bjoerke, now puts an end to Hanseatic understatement: hamburg elektronisch is a new compilation series of awesome electronic beats from the river Elbe, the first installment focuses solely on House music. The 20 tracks of this download-only compilation, among which are three exclusives, not only feature old masters like DJ Koze and Lawrence, promising newcomers like Smallpeople und Wareika, but also showcase the most important melting pots of the Hamburg scene.

As it’s getting cold outside, this music makes me warm inside! The nights are getting longer, stars are shining bright- it is time for the season of real deepness again. Smallpeople come along with another joint in splendid House Music to welcome wintertime. Dionne and Julius Steinhoff had an enormous success with their “Meadows” EP together with Christopher Rau on Smallville in last year’s autumn. Writing about the single tracks here would not make much sense. Just a few words: Every single track is unique! And still, there is definitely inside what the label promises: Extrawelt. The variety and, at the same time, the unity of the most different sounds, the caring arrangement and the fascination for details can only be described as a great sonic performance! This is again that valiant and brave reaching into the well-filled sonic lucky bag of modern electronic music that makes “In Aufruhr” so much more than just dancefloor entertainment.

The spectrum of musical influences has again extended and the most different styles of electronic music are connecting seamlessly with the Extrawelt spirit. Here, the sonic Zeitgeist is not the determining variable for the music – what really counts is the creation of nothing more and nothing less than a new world, by the means of a never-exhausting power of acoustic imagination which shows new facets, even after the thousandth time of listening pleasure. One should be careful with the use of superlatives, but this is exactly how masterpieces are sounding!

Tobias Freund has been involved in the music-making process for longer than most contemporary producers, so it’s fitting that this long-awaited artist album acts as a history lesson of sorts. It is true that in the headlong rush to be new or innovative, that a real understanding of electronic music’s past is often sacrificed. Equally, whenever a groundswell of artists focus on or take inspiration on a specific sound, such as Chicago house or 90s techno, it is often the case that their vision is too narrow, their gaze too blinkered. Freund’s great strengths here are both his ability to relive the magic of some of the dustier archives and to look far, wide and long.
