I’ve been meaning to do a ‘Staff Pick’ for this movie for a while now, but wasn’t able to find a torrent for a high quality release. UNDEAD came to my aid with this fantastic release that includes very high quality video and AC3 audio on 2 CDs. If you’ve not heard about this movie, you have been seriously deprived. Maintaining an incredible score of 8.6 on IMDB with over 179,000 voters, #33 in the IMDB prestigious Top-250 movies list, and 85% fresh on RT, famous for its harsh reviewers, this is literally one of the best movies ever made. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey act-out an engrossing story that peaks only at its very end. The only thing better than this would be the same movie in HD.

Synopsis: Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust–these are the seven deadly sins that are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and calculation by an enigmatic killer in David Fincher’s bleak thriller SEVEN. 4 Asian DVDRips of old movies ranging from 1981 to 2002 appeared today. 2 of them are from Hong Kong and the other is from Japan. I’ll be posting a fourth DVDRip from Japan and iLS soon called Angel Dust which looks most interesting, but currently I’m very busy with the forums. None of these films have previously been released in the scene, so for that we should be grateful to iLS. Its always good to see old releases that are worth releasing during times when a lot of focus lies on new blockbusters. Also don’t expect to see these releases on any public tracker. RS is your best shot if you don’t have private tracker, newsgroup or FTP access. Enjoy.

Three graduates from constable academy are sent to their rookie jobs in a modest sized town. Instructed to enforce a royal edict to end all gambling, the three friends immediately run afoul of a corrupt magistrate and his crooked police force. The police captain regularly confiscates criminal’s loot and shares it with the police officers, he also gives some back to the criminals and lets them free! The three new officers are taken aback by the rampant corruption and are not sure what to do. One wants to fight the system, Sun Chien doesn’t want to endanger his family’s income and the third rookie just wants to quit. Finally they take a vow to uphold justice but immediately are sent to capture the “King of Robbers”. The wicked police captain doesn’t back them up hoping that the “King” will kill the idealistic rookies for him.

Note: The language spoken in this rls is Cantonese, but English and Cantonese subtitles are included. The video quality of this release looks excellent for being a Hong Kong film from the 80’s. I will definitely be checking this one out.

A Hong Kong taxi driver suffers after being cursed by a sorcerer he accidentally hit with his cab. After the driver’s wife is raped and killed by teenage hooligans, he pleads with the sorcerer to lift the hex and restore his wife to the land of the living. Otherworldly zombie chaos ensues.

Note: This release is a Horror/Erotica film. To which degree this is erotic I’m not sure of, so I’d watch it alone first if you’re planning to watch it with a younger audience later. You can be sure to find sexual scenes in this though. Again the quality of this release looks very good on the video side. iLS have provided a very good rip. The audio quality is 80kb/s mono. I can only speculate but I’m guessing the source didn’t provide any better sound, which is a shame. Cantonese is spoken in this release as well, and English and Chinese subtitles are included. Enjoy some nice, 80’s horror.

Note: Japanese cinema! I’m always happy to see another japanese film released in the scene. I can’t imagine what life would be like without all these international releases so easily at hand for anybody to grab. We would all probably be a lot more narrow minded, which is why the internet and downloading is such a great thing . The video quality on this one look good once again, perhaps not as crisp of an image as on the previous ones, which is strange considering this one is from 2002. Audio on this one is a lot better however, with 2 channel and 128kb/s bitrate. This looks like quite an interesting view into Japanese culture, so I’ll enjoy it. Hope you will as well. English subs included.

Here’s an old spooky one from popular group VoMiT. “Night Caller From Outer Space“, made in 1965! There isn’t a lot of info about this film and I think you know why. But I guess if we have any old timers out there this is for you. I don’t know how this is a DVDRip when in the NFO the group doesn’t even know the release date for the DVD, but enough of my talking. Now to the release…

In this British sci-fi thriller, a spacecraft from Ganymede, the moon of Jupiter, lands in a small community, and the alien visitors set out to find women. The year is 1997. Al Pacino still makes great movies, Keanu Reeves is at his prime, Charlize Theron is hotter than ever. This quality Crime/Thriller brings them all together for an exciting ride. If you’re a fan of the genre, or any of these excellent actors, then you will thoroughly enjoy this one.

Note: HLS released this on 2 CDs, including AC3 sound. Subtitles are also added in the torrent. Since this is a DivX release, some of you may be reluctant to try it. I’ve added samples to show you that quality is indeed very sharp, despite the inferior codec used.

Here is a pack of releases I have put together that were made in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Each release involves a different country. Mafioso is from Italy, Antonio Gaudi is a Japanese film but revolves around Spanish culture and Eros Plus Massacre is from Japan. The first two are from group AEN and the third from group WRD. Great quality on all three releases so no need to comment on that individually. Hopefully some of our more mature readers will enjoy this, and all you 12 year olds can go ahead and bash it.

Mafioso.1962.DVDRip.XviD-AEN

Antonio (Alberto Sordi) is a jolly and precise guy working for an auto factory in northern Italy. He decides to take his wife and two daughters on vacation to Sicily, so that they can finally see his hometown and meet his family. He’s excited to show them around and dispel many of their negative stereotypes about Sicilians. He even dispels stereotypes about the mafia, saying that being a mafioso as a teen amounted to just being a messenger boy. But as Antonio reconnects with his past in Sicily, he finds out that there are more sides to being a Sicilian than he remembers.

Note: Language spoken is Italian, but naturally AEN have included English subtitles (vob) in this great release. This is a R1 rip of this 1962 gangster CLASSIC. Don’t expect a public torrent of this release. RS links are your best chance unless you have access to a good private tracker, usenet or FTP.

Eros.Plus.Massacre.1970.DVDRip.XviD-WRD

The film is a biography of anarchist Sakae Ōsugi, assassinated by the Japanese military in 1923. The story tells of his relationship with three women: Hori Yasuko, his wife; Noe Itō, his third lover, who was to die with him; and his jealous, second lover, Masaoka Itsuko, a militant feminist who attempts to kill him in a tea house in 1916. Parallel to the telling of Ōsugi’s life, two students do research on the political theories and ideas of free love that he upheld. Some of the characters from the past and from the present meet and engage the themes of the movie.

Note: This film was released almost 2 days ago now by group WRD, however I personally love japanese cinema and this fits in nicely into the “Old School” category. This japanese new wave film is not for everyone however. Excellent 2 CD rip from WRD. Language spoken is Japanese, english subs are included. Someone MIGHT upload a torrent of this to NTi if they see this, but chances are pretty slim. Look for RS links in comments section.

Antonio.Gaudi.1984.DVDRip.XviD-AEN

Hiroshi Teshigahara’s camera takes us over, under, around, and into buildings and a park designed by Antonio Gaudí (1852 - 1926), Catalan architect, ceramist, and sculptor. Teshigahara suggests the influence of Romanesque churches and monasteries on Gaudí and the influence of the caves and crags of Montserrat, close to Barcelona. Every line of Gaudí’s seems curved, and no surface is without textures. With little narration, the film takes us through Casa Vicens, projects for the industrialist Güell (including the Crypt of the Colònia Güell and Park Güell), Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, and Barcelona’s landmark, the unfinished Templo de La Sagrada Familia.

Note: This is another example of Japanese cinema, however this one revolves around Spanish architecture and culture. Quality from AEN on 1 CD. Spoken languages are Japanese AND Spanish. English subtitles are included here as well. Again do no expect to find a public torrent of this.

On a painfully slow day such as this, a staff pick from me is inevitable. This time, I chose to tell you about ‘Rounders‘. In the top 5 of every ‘best poker movies’ list, many think that this is the best poker movie there ever was. And I tend to agree. Almost every other movie about poker, that I’ve seen, portrays it as a game of luck and chance rather than skill and wits, and that just isn’t true. As Matt Damon put it so well: “Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker every year? What, are they the luckiest guys in Vegas?”. The movie is very well casted and acted out. It isn’t a feel-good comedy, and shows how life can bite you in the ass. Overall, ‘Rounders‘ is a must for every fan of the art that is poker, and an exciting watch for the casual viewer.

Synopsis: A law school student (Matt Damon) loses his tuition money and everything else he has saved in a high stakes poker game. Learning his lesson (he thinks), he vows to his girl friend (Mol Gretchen) to give up playing forever. That lasts until his best friend (Edward Norton), a notorious card shark, is released from prison and drags him back into the circuit to pay debts he has incurred to a Russian mobster (John Malkovich). John Turturro also appears as a career poker player and Martin Landau plays a law professor who understands his student’s need to be something other than what is dictated to him.

Anyone in the mood for a violent, funny, innovative crime thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously? “The Boondock Saints” is my definition of a good time. The conflict between an impressive 7.8 on IMDB by over 51,000 people and just 19% on RT must prove something. Is it that critics are full of themselves to the extent that they can’t accept a movie that doesn’t pretend to be anything more than just that? Maybe it’s just that the average viewer is able to perfectly relate to the idea of this movie? Anyway, I hope you will enjoy it. Quality of the release is very good, and samples are available.

Synopsis: Fraternal twins Conner (Flanery - SUICIDE KINGS) and Murphey (Reedus - GOSSIP) MacMannus are on a mission from God to rid Boston of crime.
