Casper v5.0.1294-iND

This program with funny name reminds me on who else than “Casper the Friendly Ghost” from the cartoon/movie. Anyways, this tool can ghost (hence the name) aka clone/backup/copy your HDD(s) without hassles. If you’re ever used similar tools (such as Acronis True Image) then you’ll get used to it quickly.

Description: Casper creates a complete copy of your system hard disk, including the operating system, applications, settings, and all of your data. Casper makes it easy to keep a complete and instantly bootable backup replacement hard disk for your system. Should your system hard disk fail or become corrupted by a virus or spyware attack, you can boot and run your computer directly from your backup hard disk and be up and running again in seconds!

Ok, question? I see it says on a hard disc, but what say your HD you are backing up is 30 to 40GB. Does this make discs in succession? say disc 1 till it is filled and then move on to disc 2 untill it is filled and so on and so forth till it is done?

Or is this a compressed version that tries to stuff everything onto a single disc?

I’ve tried so many different programs what try this sort of thing, but they all fail miserably.

I will reserve my judgement once again for the 70th time and give it a try, although I remain uncovinced and skeptical about the results it will give.

Thanks, I’ve been using Casper.v4.0.1270.Tech.Edition for about 6 months now.
The SmartClone feature allows me to make bootable backups of my 100 GB HD in about 30 minutes or so. Without it, cloning would take about 3 to 5 hours.
I only wish I could boot off of an external USB drive, instead of having to physically swap the HD’s. But that my be a limitation of my windows XP setup.

This programs are so 1999. And most of them don’t even do a good job.

I’m a happy Windows Home Server user. Daily backups and when a drive or my OS goes KABOOM, I’ve got my stuff up and running in it old state within the hour.

    @munyabadi
My understanding is that the technique you’re referring to doesn’t work. I believe it has something to do with the fact that hard disks have individual serial numbers. If it were that easy to clone a complete OS from one disk and just load it onto a virgin disk in another computer, I think we’d have heard about it by now. I’m not even sure you can swap your current hard disk into another computer and expect it to function either.
But, hey, I’m not an expert. So if anyone can enlighten us…

  26. k
    August 21st, 2008 | 12:49

i just read some comments saying it doesnt work and all. you obviously are noobs. it is best if you got an external harddisk, copy the image there and if the system goes nuts, within 10 minutes you got everything back to normal by booting it with the image program and choosing the image from the external.

so no reinstall windows, no 1 hour wait windows server stuff, no reinstalling anything….

been doing it for years so obviously it works.

The ONLY fool I see here is you, you twit. I have Acronis True Image v10 on my machine and even the splash screen states that it DOES NOT make a mirror image of the hard drive, it only takes programs like e-mail and stuff and that leaves over 95% of your programs blowin in the wind.

So before you start spouting off and making yourself look more stupid then usual, at least make sure that someonebody asking the questions about this program does not already HAVE the stinking program you are hawking already installed and has tried to use it with no success.

I use Paragon now,but TI is a good program IMO also,so is Ghost.

No, the program I have does not do this. maybe it is corrupted or maybe it needs reinstalled but it clearly does NOT make a mirror image of the hard drive as a back up, that is unless you can explain how it can compress 45GB of a 200GB hard drive down to less then 10mb. That is the size of the file when I am done and I have told it to copy the whole hard drive.

I followed step by step the instructions in the owners manual that came with the store bought cd, and it just will not work. All the stuff I want to back up comes to 94.6GB and I have a 160GB hard drive to use only for the backups…yet when I use all the settings I am told to use, I look at the file left over and I am looking at a 10mb file.

So while I am doing exactly what the manual says to do, something is not working on this, hence the reason for my post above.

Even if i don’t use TI,paragon does something similar. But it’s what it’s supposed to do.It creates 3 images for 1backup ,and the larger one needs to be selected for the restore.
    http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?d5cbdaa505.jpg
Search to see if there are other files than the 10MB one.
Also it is recommanded that you have only windows &program files on c,so the recovery images will be smaller, and you can save a image on a dvd also.
Personally I like the following procedure:

    1. Fresh OS install -> Drivers Installation -> Activation of the OS -> Defrag(using jk defrag becouse it doesn’t require installation) -> Take an Image (My basic and most important image).
    2. Update windows -> Take a second image.
    3. Install my essential software(without security apps), configure the OS and the programs, defrag -> take image an again.
All these 3 images are 8GIB,they can be restored b4windows start via the bootcapsule,or from the recovery CD’s.
ps1. The first step is done only once. I never reinstall my OS again; when is needed I restore that image and I have a perfectly clean OS.
This woorks as i used on vista also.As othe user stated even a larger backup is restored in 5-6 minutes, with paragon probably the same time with norton ghost or latest TI,more quicly than a virus scan.

Awww, hurt your wittle fweewins did I for real? Ok moron, when you follow the directions in the owners manual and do it step by step and it DON WORK, then guess what twit…the program WILL NOT do what you say it does. I will ask you the same question…what program can take 90+GB of stuff and turn it into a 10mb file? With that kind of compression we could take complete 8GB HD movies and cut them clear down to less then 100kb. The only problem fool, is that there is no such program. Therefor if I have everything checked that the owners manual says to have checked and it STILL does not make a mirror image…then either the program does not do what you say, hence you are telling a lie…or you have never used it and are just being a troll.

You pick what one you are.

Most likely you skipped a step on the road. They won’t ask if u bought or not the program. It’s a nonsense to still keep a 100MB program that modifies you MBR,just for backing outlook.
