Canon officially introduced EOS 50D

Those leaked EOS D50 specs on Canon’s Chinese site? Real. The official announcement came today and everything tallies with what we saw on Friday. 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (with 1.6x crop factor), a big 3″ LCD screen, Live View (for previewing images on the screen), ISO running up to 12800 (in a special, try-not-to-use-it hidden mode) and, possibly the most interesting, Canon’s new image processing chip, the DIGIC 4. In digicams, the two things which impact the picture quality (after the light has made it in through the lens) are the sensor and the image processor. The 50D is the first Canon camera to use the new DIGIC 4 chip, and it appears to be an incremental upgrade.

If you have a fast enough memory card (Compact Flash) then you’ll get a whopping 90 jpeg images in a single burst, at up to 6.3 fps. RAW shooters see a smaller improvement: you get 16 shots before the camera pauses for breath. The new DIGIC also includes face detection (up to 35 faces!) and in-camera vignetting controls with supported EF lenses. This last gets the rather fancy title of “Peripheral Illumination Correction”. There is also built-in sensor cleaning along with dust removal software which, in a fit of alliteration, Canon has named “Dust Delete Data Detection”. Other goodies include HDMI out and nine-point autofocus. The price for all these whizz-bang features? $1400.

    Good piece of engineering but alas if Canon still doesnt get it right at dust removal and offers it also as software tool option, old Olympus got rid of the dust problem years ago! and not counting the internal firmware bad pixels remapping that the Oly offers for free and the CanoNikons charge for at their service centers. Still this is a fine piece of Canon engineering.

    So in other words… A stalkers dream camera!

    Lol, just kidding. Camera’s are so advanced these days, it’s insane! The more high-tech the high end camera’s become, so do their cheaper counter-parts, which is great news for the average consumer.

    Doesn’t the rlslog slogan go: “Hot info about new scene releases!” and not “Hot info about new digital cameras!” Should have posted some video camera at least so we could get better CAMs :)

    @9 dingh mangherina
    You cant buy em yet… lol…this is mostly speculation will probably even change slightly before they confirm exactly what it will have…. I guess already some places could be taking pre-orders but they wont even have guarnteed stock yet….

    I have zee canon 40D and im very happy with it… the only thing that could maybe sway me towards the 50D would be 15.1MP cause i would like to be able to print even bigger lol!!! Other than that not alot else has really changed…digic n HDMI… i dont need 35 faces recognised… or a tv out lol…

    Btw start of this post you call it a D50 then get it the rite way round in the header and other places in post….

    Canon keeps updating their camera’s too fast. Buy one this year and there will be something much better the next.

    I’m a long time Canon SLR user from the 35mm SLRs, and they make very well layed-out cameras. But I refuse to buy one of their digital SLRs until they provide image stabilization in-camera. Nikon and Canon are milking it in added costs in their lenses and I refuse to go that route when I can buy another camera that provides IS with ANY lens.

    @11,

    I have the canon 40d, and the 15.1 mp is down towards the bottom of my list, as this has some very nice new features. The 50d is a pretty big upgrade from the 40d.

    Peripheral Illumination correction is SICK.

    The CMOS sensor is superior.

    50D automatically corrects the dark corners (vignette) on your pictures caused by uneven light amount entering lenses. Usually the wider the lens you have, or in lower light condition, the more dark corner you will get.

    Canon built a vignette database of their 82 lenses so users of 50D can correct the vignette themselves. 50D is already loaded with 26 lens vignette profiles and can be loaded up to 40 by users.

    UDMC support is very nice also.

    The following 2 are very compelling.

    Live View AF
    -EVEN the AF micro adjustment killer feature that is only seen on 1Ds MkIII is on 50D!! AF microadjust • +/- 20 steps • Adjust all lenses by same amount/individually adjust up to 20 lenses

    I am hoping many of these features are in the 5dMarkII, as I want to get a Full Frame. But I am most likely gonna just improve my jedi skills with the 40d for another 2-3 years before I upgrade. But I am tempted to sell my 40d and get the 50d, VERY tempted.

    Here is the press release and a review on DPreview, and it comes with a pretty nifty kit lens if you so desire.

    @ garbanzo “cool, where can i download one??”
    :D Haha, if you find a link, please give it to me. No rapidshare please though. lol.
    EOS is one of the best lines out there for camera (semi)pro’s. I happen to have something quite solid, but nothin mirror reflex. Perhaps I become a Sony Alpha 200 though for cheap though. We’ll see. I actually don’t want to carry blobby things around (though I allready have to all day ;))

    Bigger sensor = more megapixels = more noise.

    The megapixel race needs to stop, anything past 8MP is useless for the majority of people.
