Canon introduces 12Mpx Rebel XSi DSLR camera

When it comes to D-SLR cameras, Canon and Nikon are usually the first companies to come to mind. Both companies trade blows back and forth year after year as they release new models with more advanced features. In late 2006, Canon introduced its Digital Rebel XTi to much fanfare. The XTi brought a 10.1MP image sensor, 2.5″ LCD screen and the EOS Integrated Cleaning System (ICS) to the Digital Rebel line. Today, Canon is going one step further with the Digital Rebel XSi. The XSi brings a new 12.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 3.0″ LCD screen with Live View, a 9-point autofocus system, DIGIC III image processor, larger viewfinder, higher-capacity battery and a 3.5 FPS burst mode (53 JPEG or 6 RAW). Canon also made the move to SD/SDHC memory cards with the XSi — it is the first Canon D-SLR with this capability.

“The EOS 450D bears the fruits of more than 20 years of ongoing investment into EOS,” said Canon’s Mogens Jensen. “This camera continues Canon’s policy of taking technologies proven in the professional arena and putting them within reach of a wider market of amateur photographers.” The new XSi measures 5.1″ x 3.9″ x 2.4″ and weighs one pound without the battery. Dimensionally, the XSi is slightly larger than its XTi predecessor. The Canon Digital Rebel XSi will be available soon for $799 in a body-only version. The kit version of the XSi with an 18-55 mm IS lens will cost $899. I love those cameras, although it’s definitely not for everyone – I often prefer my tiny pocket camera which can be taken to all parties and pubs, but if you’re into fine image quality and artistic pictures, DSLR is the way to go.

    Hey sorry RLSLOG

But how about you guys/girls make some info about The Wire releasing (PREAIRs) lately..there has been 3 already and I hear from different people there will be 3 more coming soon this week. This is important because you don’t see many PREAIRs out there. And considering that The Wire is a popular show this would be a good post to review about. I seen them on an FTP under -CODERX (never heard of this group?) anyway thanks and keep up the good work!.

    OLD NEWS!!!

aNYWAY, this camera sucks, no CF cards, new type of battery, wtf?

  7. January 27th, 2008 | 00:51

the switch to SD doesnt seem that bad for me. new cameras from nikon use them as well and they are by far the cheapest.

Exactly 2gb 150x SD card can be bough for £10

SD is much slower than CF, try to save 30 jpg burst and then compare with the fastest CF cards.

Yay. Yet another leap back in image quality by increasing pixels to the sensor. CMOS will soon reach it’s limits, thus camera manufacturors really need to push some new technology to the markets. At least from my point of view, but there’s still people who rather look at the big megapixel numbers and not really the fact that cameras used to be and always should be made with the highest standards to last a lifetime. Theres no digital SLR on the market that’ll keep up for the “standards” for even 5 years, when my old canon AE-1 still is making fine quality prints almost 35 years after it was made.

I just bought a Canon EOS 3 film camera and would highly recommend it to people who are considering to buy this crap. It’s available used from around 350 euros to 700 euros with a battery booster, giving it 7 frames per second. Even though people might think that film is crap and totally unusable today, i might add that i get fine 20+ megapixel files with a decent film scanner.

So please people, dont buy these plastic pos cameras.

Finntroll how much is a decent film scanner these days?

    January 27th, 2008 | 03:22

Still the same size sensor as the 350D and 400D (AKA XT and XTi, 22.2 x 14.8 mm). I’m sure “prosumers” will still eat up the extra megapixels like it matters (not to mention live view).

    Finntroll,
Photo studio I worked for was talking such nonsense like u do but 9 years ago. They all used huge expensive film cameras until they finally compared quality & functionality of digital pro cameras of 1999. We are now in 2008 and you are still somewhere in 1998 by my count. I totally hated to scan film negatives to digital photos; no matter how good film scanner was, the result was crap. What r u, like 100? Are you still physically mailing photos to your friends and family? Ever heard of digital photo frames and Picasa?

Pentax also announce 2 new cameras – the k20d and k200d. Much better value than Canikon.

k20d US$1,000 weather sealed, high iso LOW noise, use cheap pentax legacy lens if you want. GO PENTAX!

12MP for a crop sensor? Meh, the market still prefers quantity over quality it seems. But it’s aimed for avarage consumers anyway, so w.e.

I do own a set of dslr’s too. You probably haven’t never heard of noctilux or really used a real camera like a Leica or Hasselblad. I own both. I do not live in 1998. The dslr’s today are like slr’s were 10 years ago.

Since when did professionals use Picasa?

  29. Inevitable

    Ft,
Didn’t say pros use Picasa. Yes, I know cameras you are mentioning and I know what you like about them. Sorry for abrasiveness.

Who will have the guts to come out with a DSLR with image stabilization built into the camera first, Nikon or Canon? I have a lot of Canon 35mm lenses and equipment but until they stop trying to exploit the added cost in their IS lenses instead of simply adding it to the camera itself, I refuse to buy one of their DSLRs. That and larger-sized sensors at a reasonable price – if not a 1x/36×24mm sensor, at least something closer to a 1.2-1.3x sized sensor. It’d be nice to see them add video capability to some of these DSLRs as well, but I know there are some technical issues that exist there.

This isn’t Canon’s first camera to use SD cards. At least Canon EOS 1DmkIII uses both SD and CF.

Also, I wouldn’t say image quality is going to suffer from more pixels on any DSLR for a long time. See http://6mpixel.org/en/ for more information.

But still I’m waiting to Canon announce their successor for 5D.
