Candlebox - Into the Sun (2008)

I was pretty shocked when I saw that a new release by Candlebox had hit the scene, the same day it hits store shelves, titled Into the Sun.  Maybe I’m showing my age a little, but Candlebox was one of the biggest acts that came out of the early 90s Seattle “grunge” scene, and had 5 Top 10 hits during that time.  Now, 10 years after their last release, they’re back with something new.  But will it still resonate and find the same audience?

Candlebox is a band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in November 1990, they originally named the band Uncle Duke; they later changed the name as a tribute to a Midnight Oil song. Candlebox were sometimes looked down upon by grunge fans for their style, which was considered by some to be a more derivative version of true grunge, and their commercial success as a result of it. Despite this, the band played the Seattle club circuit during the early 1990s to many of the same fans who had supported many of the bands that had come immediately before them. The members did not consider Candlebox to be a grunge band however; they viewed themselves as a rock and roll band more than anything and their style reflected that. Nevertheless, Candlebox had sold more than 4 million copies of their self-titled debut which, after many months of gaining momentum peaked at number 7 on Billboard’s album charts. The follow up album, Lucy, was certified gold in 1996. Candlebox was the first successful act on Madonna’s Maverick Records, which went on to sign Alanis Morissette, Deftones, and The Prodigy.

    @chinballs & ihateemo
    You shouldn’t be ashamed because you know good music, or because of the fact that you grew up in a time when people were still playing good music. I’ve gotta dig up my candlebox cassette, still love listening to it in the tape recorder, brings back great memories. :)

    memories, dont have too many of those anymore.
    I tell my 8yr old the early 90s were a great time
    to be young, when raves were free a a hit of X was
    $5 bucks, I feel like the teenagers are kinda getting
    robbed of a somewhat normal childhood these days. If
    I did half the things i did when i was 18 now. id be
    on americas most wanted or something

    Returning after 10 years candlebox proves they can still rock with the best of them. The first single “Stand” is a rocking anthem of a tune that shows candlebox still has it both musically and lyrically. Peter Klett’s guitar work has never sounded better. Making the guitar solo’s fit perfectly into place in each song is not easy, but Klett does it effortlessly. Not only is this album a companion to their self titled debut, but it goes on experimental heights in it’s songwriting. Songs like “Breathe Me In” and “Consider Us” actually seem like a progression for the band in different musical directions. Candlebox might have a few more albums in them after all. I sure hope they do.

    Atleast they didn’t do like the rest of the old bands and get carried away with whatever they could get out fast enough to get “commercialized”. Somebody needs to put some of those bands need to be [nuked] permanently.

    I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this album. “My music” is totally of the early 90’s genre (soundgarden, pearl jam, stp, tool, e.t.c.) and these guys have made a true rock album that trancends their time and makes you feel like you’re back in 1991 - good times! Anyway, there are so many old acts that have been resurfacing and the majority of them have been disappointing, but imo these guys did an awesome job and made a solid album that you can listen to start to finish, which I can’t say about most new stuff out there today. The songs are dynamic, and have that grungy, heavy guitar sound mixed with some impressive lead guitar, melodies, and outstanding vocals. Fans of the early 90’s music should definitely download. People who grew up in the ‘numetal’ or post-grunge phase just might not be able to appreciate this remnant of the last we heard of ‘real music,’ since those days have long since past. But even they should still download and get a taste of what real music is ;)
