@46: Undersea cables are actually quite commonplace, and not limited to the middle east at all. Both America and the UK us them for example.

Satellites are indeed very expensive to launch and maintain, but the bigger issue is the latency issues you get when beaming a signal up into space and then back down again.

Fiber optic cable on the other hand is relatively inexpensive, and has mind-boggling speed and bandwidth with very little latency. We're talking upwards into the terrabits per second range when you start bundling lots of strands together and use various amplification/multiplexing techniques.

As for America cutting the cable as a preemptive strike against the middle east (notably Iran most paranoids say), well it just doesn't make any sense. After all, what good is a preemptive strike when it isn't followed by any war-like action, such as a primary invasion? We all know that didn't happen.

Some people...

Yeah I read a lot of dumb $hit in these comments, and I hope most of it's not really viewed this way.

I think that the U.S. would have done this to cut off the middle-east from seeing the truth, and from being able to speak the truth.

It seems like the perfect plan for them. They don't want people to see what's really going on in the world, they just want to keep everyone believing their lies.

Personally when I first heard about sub-marine internet cables the very first thing that came to mind was "what idiots"! I mean, really I just can't see it being worth it. Thousands of miles of wire are spread under the sea, and your telling me that nothing is going to collide with these? What ever happened to satellites? Are they just too expensive for the middle eastern countries, or is there someone keeping them down for a reason?

Why do all you other Americans talk so much $hit? We are going to see a day when America gets punked down by a bigger bully! I am scared to live here, and worse yet ashamed.

Why do we only think about whats best for ourselves?

[I may have never met you, but I want you to know that I love you.]

Being a restricted area means there probably isn't a whole lot of boat traffic. Sounds like the perfect meeting spot if I were going to sell arms to Iraqis. Then again, it could just be good fishing there, since over-fishing likely isn't taking place. You decide.

PS: Love the Harold and Kumar references. Couldn't have been more perfect with what I was thinking when I first read this article lol. ;-)

@41 Capitalist systems need to make a profit meaning they will always get some stuff done by those willing to do it the cheapist. And as others have already mentioned the cables were cut so monitoring equipment could be inserted, not improve the American job market.

Even though I'm not particularly fond of Korean or Iraqi history in politics, I must applaud anyone purposefully responsible for cutting the middle east off from the internet. Way too many companies have taken the easy road, and transferred technical jobs overseas. Leaving thousands of Americans without jobs. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of unhappy customers who are now forced to attempt communication with an American company through foreign conduits. Just cause the person on the other end of the phone can speak English, does not mean communication is occurring. I very honestly hope this happens again. If the middle-east, especially India, get cut off from the internet again, there is a potential for the American job market to improve.
