Blue Badge Patch for Windows 7

Rafael from WithinWindows has just released a patch to patch the Windows 7 build(6801) released at the recent PDC 2008 in Los Angeles. This build is the build that Microsoft handed out at the event, some how Rafael has found a way, or made a way to unlock some new features from the build shown at the conference. It’s only available for 32 bit systems(x86) the version for the 64 bit system will be released tomorrow. The files it patches are not automatically backed up so it’s highly recommend that you back up these files before they are patched! I know one feature that you all wanted is the new taskbar, yes it’s unlocked in this! That files the are patched and need to be backed up are below:

  • \Windows\Explorer.exe
  • \Windows\System32\wisptis.exe
  • \Windows\System32\ieframe.dll
  • \Windows\System32\shell32.dll
  • \Windows\System32\stobject.dll
  • \Windows\System32\TabletPC.cpl
  • \Windows\System32\themecpl.dll
  • \Windows\System32\themeui.dll
  • \Windows\System32\powercfg.cpl

    If they make it
    1) Boot faster and run faster
    2) Be very reliable
    3) Use LESS resources (not more) - less hard disk space, less CPU, less memory.
    4) Less filled with useless bloatware - or make the “extras” truly optional addon/downloads

    Then it might be worth a look but based on their track record it will probably need more resources and filled with extra useless junk most people don’t need or use.

    I have a few questions:
    1. Will Windows7 suck less then Vista?
    2. When will “working” version be released?
    3. What are advantages of 7 over XP or over Vista, disadvantages?

  9. Ian
    November 10th, 2008 | 14:35

    @8 Bizak
    1. Vista never sucked, peoples PC’s do. Everyone with a decent PC can run Vista, but for some reason people expect every new version of an OS to be able to run on a Pentium III. It’s as stable as XP, and safer. Only disadvantage is driver support which lacks at points, but whose fault is that, Microsoft’s or the hardware suppliers?
    2. Release is currently stated for early 2010.
    3. Can’t sum all of em up here, but googling will get you quite far.

    @7 snooze
    I truly can’t stand people like you. Judging from that comment you know NOTHING of software development, OSs or anything computers.
    It boots and runs fast enough, if you have a PC to match these times. No, your Pentium III won’t run it, and why should it. You expect Microsoft to keep supporting every crappy 1990’s PC out there?! It’s 2008 my friend, get with the times.
    EVERY Windows NT version has been stable, as long as people don’t install crap on it. When you keep installing “free” software from the internet, downloading virusses, and generally abuse your Windows installation, ofcourse it’s going to get unreliable. It’s your stupidity. Now Microsoft did something for that in Vista (asking you for every program you install for permission), and yet you find a way to whine about it. People like you will never be satisfied, since they project THEIR mistakes on others (Microsoft).
    Use less resources? This is a NEW version, aimed at NEW PCs. It uses the resources it needs, and PCs from this time have no problem running it.
    What you call bloatware, other people call usefull. Just because YOU think a certain piece of software is useless, doesn’t mean the smart people do aswell.

    In short, I pretty much despice people like you.

    Nope, nope, nope.

    Try this little experiment:
    1. Install XP on a new partition. Include any additional components on the disk. - It should come to approx 4-5gb.

    2. Make a note of the total HD space taken up, then format the hard drive.

    3. Now try the same with Vista (your pick which ver.), and install no additional components whatsoever.

    4. Take a look at the amount of HD space taken up by both OS’s - staggering, isn’t it?!

    Vista is bloatware. It has a few good features, but there are so many unnecessary gimmicks on it, and it is a bit of a mess. A good looking mess, but polishing turds is what Microsoft are good at.

    I’ve also run some benchmark tests on the same PC using both XP & Vista. In most cases, the difference between XP & Vista are negligible, so, so much for designing Vista for New PCs.

    With regards to stability & user-friendliness, actually, one of the first problems with Vista was that many users were complaining of BSODs, backwards compatability (or lack of), virtually no support for some more commonplace drivers, and an annoying interface that repeatedly asked “Are you sure”, even for simple tasks.

    So with regard to Snooze’s comments, I’m in agreement. New PCs are built to be faster, with more memory & CPU speeds. I’d sooner run a sleek OS that allows the user to take full advantage of that, than an OS that is designed to hog everything, just cos it’s there.

    I’ve no doubt that there are some people out there who do like Vista, and that’s fine by me, but that’s no reason to act all smug & superior to everyone else because they don’t agree with you.

    Please do not belittle other people, or make judgements on their entire knowledge of PCs based on one comment. It’s not cool, and you may get burned in return.

    November 10th, 2008 | 15:39

    @22 Trell
    This is my last try. I do not belittle people, I just get pissed off by people always dismissing MS software as crap, without any knowledge to support it.

    I know Vista is bigger. In comparisment, look at how much total diskspace is normal now, to when XP was launched. Yes Vista is bigger, but the amount of HD space we now have compared to the launch of XP is more aswel!

    Again with the bloatware, I repeat my comment: What you call bloatware, other people call usefull software. No need to search for a browser (well there is if you don’t like IE, something I can relate to, but fact remains at least you got one shipped with it), or a media player (personally I really like WMP11), or a calculator, or that wheater thingie (I imagine some people like it), and that goes for everything in the OS.

    Yes the benchmarks show little difference, I never said it would be faster on newer PCs, I said it was designed for newer PCs, thus the increased hardware requirements. Games for instance DO look better on Vista (DX10).

    Vista was released too soon, because people kept asking for it. MS thought they could score by releasing it early. Big mistake, it wasn’t completely done.

    I do however object to the following:
    “With regards to stability & user-friendliness, actually, one of the first problems with Vista was that many users were complaining of BSODs, backwards compatability (or lack of), virtually no support for some more commonplace drivers, and an annoying interface that repeatedly asked “Are you sure”, even for simple tasks.”
    All the BSODs where only on older PCs. In no company I’ve been as a consultant has there ever been a BSOD. There was no backwards compatibility and in my opinion there shouldn’t have been either. You can’t keep on supporting old software/hardware, look at how long theyve supported dos software, and how that has affected development. If it was up to me, even x86 support was pulled!
    The annoying interface “Are you sure” is just idiot protection, cause people kept installing trash on their XP machines, and afterwards keep complaining that “XP is so unstable!!!”. It’s a rather poorly implemented idiot protection, but what would you have em do…
    For the development of Windows 7 Microsoft is very open to comments from it’s userbase, so I’d say if something annoyed you on previous versions of Windows, tell em!

    November 10th, 2008 | 15:58

    @ 22 here this sounds just as good…

    @Ian

    Nope, nope, nope.

    Try this little experiment:
    1. Install Win98 on a new partition. Include any additional components on the disk. - It should come to approx 12.4mb.

    2. Make a note of the total HD space taken up, then format the hard drive.

    3. Now try the same with XP (your pick which ver.), and install no additional components whatsoever.

    4. Take a look at the amount of HD space taken up by both OS’s - staggering, isn’t it?!

    @3. John
    Try this review, there’s a big write up and screenshots.

    http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_preview.asp

    Vista runs stable on my newly built machine, I’ve had no problems with it since i upgraded all my outdated hardware and software, my PC runs smoothly…

    People are reluctant to try vista maybe because they’re so use to working with and relying on what they have. Adapting to an unfamiliar O.S can be time consuming and a little frustrating, things aren’t where you’re use to them being and other things don’t even exist or they’ve been replaced with the new, plus, the whole look of it just feels a little intimidating to a new user.

    The vista incompatibilities are but an obstacle that can be overcome and updating componants/software is an option if you’re fully committed to migrating to vista.

    I’ve done my fair share of critism back in the day, i remember my experience migrating from 98 to XP years back causing my old system to frequently crap out, i swore black and blue and blamed the O.S, i followed a friends suggestion to upgrade my hardware so i did, my XP just cruised along after that.

    I’m happy with my vista install and i’ll give windows 7 a try also.

    November 10th, 2008 | 16:53

    You guys can rant all day long on this topic, the fundamental part is that since technology evolves, so do software. I’ll confirm Ians comments about BSOD’s, backward compatibility etc. First of all, most BSOD is due to either incompatible drivers (not Microsoft’s fault) or hardware failures. As a consultant you’ve seen this happen with every big upgrade, I would honestly want to see more UAC in W7 to prevent users doing whatever they want. Of course you should be able to turn it off as an administrator but it should be there, on by default.

    As a former linux-only user I came to understand that to run a successful business you need to have security and user-friendlyness as a top priority in the systems used and that’s what I think Microsoft delivers, even though they could have hold on to Vista a few more months (partly to give the driver developers some time to get decent drivers for their hardware ready).

    Windows……by far…95 was the most stable of the home options….98…new stuff…but even new pc’s that came with it crashed….alot. XP…new pc….ran great…..not one crash….in 4 years have only reformatted and reinstalled 1 time…by choice not from a crash…
    Vista….don’t own it…have worked on several new pc’s and laptops that came with it….nothing but trouble. Have had to help a few more than a handful of times on it.
    Just a personal opinion…but vista is….total crap whether on a new pc or not.

    @41 Teach
    Sorry, but wrong. The main reason companies didn’t want to switch is because they always wait how it turns out. Turns out for companies it didn’t have enough advantages to switch. Not because it was a bad OS, but because the advantages weren’t enough to justify the price.

    Which is also why Vista in total failed. Consumer sales is worth nothing to Microsoft, most of their profits come from businessess.

    I use vista ultimate 64bit and love it.Yes there are times of bluescreens and freezes that require control-alt-delete, but in my case, it happens because im an overclocker who runs his computer always near the edge or reliability.Ive found vista very stable, as good as any other operating system when run on a sanely clocked machine.The main issue that constantly comes up with vista is its performance and its size.Anyone in this day and age should be using 4gigs of ram to run vista,any less and ur experience will suffer.Yes its a large install but its also very beautiful and has a contemporary feel to it that makes using XP seem like a step into the past by comparison.Thats Why we now have huge drives of up to 1 terabyte in modern computers,3 gig or faster dualcores and 4 or more gigs ram and perhaps an 8800gt card or greater.With those kind of specs running Vista is a walk in the park,its rocket fast and can have all visual features enabled.My own system scores 5.9 in all areas except cpu,which is 5.8…If ur system can break into the 5.0 or greater range,ur not experiencing what vista can be like..

    Eh, honestly, I’d say everyone has their own opinion. Some people are gonna use Vista, others aren’t. Me? I do. It runs faster on my machine than XP ever did. I have 10x LESS BSOD’s than my XP gave me. Moving on, there were extensive tests run on Vista by various notable pirate groups and none came back saying that Vista reported anything undue back to Microsoft or anyone else.

    @11 and I truly can’t stand jerkovskis like you who think it is ACCEPTABLE to demand ever more and more hardware to do mostly the same thing.

    For your information I do have a history in software development. I also have an honors degree in software engineering. I can take apart and put computers together as easy as pie. I know how to tweak systems quite well. My own computer is powerful enough to run most demanding things currently.

    Listen bub here’s the VERY SIMPLE LOGIC which you truly can not seem to appreciate. If you use XP for say, every day activities like e-mail, office, gaming and then move to Vista and do EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS guess what? You actually get LESS performance for your money. Comprende hombre?! Now go away with your “oh noes you gots to buy more and pay more to keep doing the same thing as you did!” idiocy. People like YOU are why efficient optimized code is or has become a thing of the past. Why bother making something lightweight and fast when you can just offload the bloat onto your customers eh.

    Oh yeah and I’ve used Windows since the first incarnation. Majority of my uses haven’t changed much, sure the games have looked prettier but Word 2007 use is the same as Word 2.0 - except it’s cost me a lot more in terms of resources. I just get pissed off by people belittling other people without any knowledge.

    or why not just run xp - which is vista but without all the junk.

    even better nlite it and have a nice streamlined os that runs amazingly on a quad-core dual-processor (XEON X5365 3.0GHZ - 8cores at 3ghz each).

    It can easily run vista - but why? resources are better spent elsewhere (like the apps you are actually running, not the OS).

    Well first of all I agree with snooze :) Why buying more expensive software and hardware to do the same things? Thats why I’m trying this: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4285291/TinyVista_Rev02_-_eXPerience

    Maybe it doesnt have some useful things like Remote Desktop or something else but it runs so good and it doesnt need so much hardware :) I will try and use it in a Pentium IV 1.7GHz with only 512 MB RAM :)

    “but polishing turds is what Microsoft are good at.” ok, that’s funny, and I totally agree. I did hear the Win 7 will allow more flexibility when installing.

    Seriously…why in the world do I need tablet PC software on my ‘normal’ pc… and finding some settings in vista…horrible! And I am not gonna say I have the newest PC, but it’s not ‘old’ either, and vista is still slow on it…I want FAST damn it! Give me XP anytime.

    OH MY GOD I can’t believe you guys.
    With vista microsoft tried making an OS that could compete with the sleek graphics and such which OS X had, but:
    1. My 1.6 ghz single-core powerbook, with 64 mb’s of graphics ram, runs OSX’s awesome graphics completely fluently, but for vista you need a dual core cpu and whatnot for it to run okay.
    2. When you run the same games on vista as on xp, they’re slower on vista, at least from my experience, on the same computer, I have a double-boot, but I never use vista, why? Slower framerates for crysis:warhead, spore and more.
    3. They’ve changed and hidden a lot of things in vista, user-friendly doesn’t nescessarily mean locking settings to only be available from within regedit or the command promt.
    4. Vista’s design is ugly, tasteless and in general a disaster.

    Hmmmm…if you like Vista, the only way to go is Server 2008, Vista without DRM….at least you only enable what you require..

    Vista does have some nice features, but there are no really good reasons to upgrade from XP, really… These features arent worth all the trouble you get because of drivers and hardware compability…

    You people are idiots.

    Vista isn’t crap, it’s all in the computer. You can’t expect a revolution in speed each time a new OS comes out.

    And in my time of using computers for almost 14 years, I have YET to see this famous BSOD.

    Get a better computer, and stop whining about everything because it’s different.

    And FYI, I’m using an IBM X41 right now with Vista Ultimate, and almost all the drivers are XP drivers, and they function just fine, so I have no clue what you’re talking about when you say incompatibilities.

    #65. Money. Easily. Fools. Parted. Their. And. Are.

    Work it out. That’s you. You happily “upgrade” and pay more just so you can carry on doing the same as before.

    I couldn’t stand Vista from day one. And yes, I tried it more than one day. Windows 7 actually shows great promise. The interface feel much “calmer” and some good improvements in workflow have been made. And it’s without any doubt way faster than 7, very much noticeable. I really think they are on the right track with 7.

    Vista is not that bad, look at XP - every 2nd program crashing it… Even you have newly installed XP some programs you using everyday keeps crashing sometimes or just Stop responding and Im talking about programs which are stable enough but sometimes crash in XP.
    I never had that problems in vista.
    And there someting else - if programs stop responding and you go to TaskManager and try to kill it, it will take long time before program is closed. In Vista stopping program which not responding is very quick.
