Wouldnt you need a blu-ray drive to read the blu-ray in the first place? Also playing blu-ray on a dvd player only works on some players that can display HD resolutions, like upscaling ones.
It will be good for backing up your Bluray movies for 2 reasons from my POV.
#1 You buy the retail BD disc of a newer film and back it up on Dvd for your rooms without a Bluray player instead of buying a second copy of the same film in Dvd format.
#2 If you back up your Bluray films in AVCHD format, 2 DVD5 discs are preferable to a dual layer disc when factoring the cost of the blank media.
I don't get it.
Does this convert .mkv format to some format that you can play in a dvd-player, like .avi?
I on the other hand can clearly see the usefulness of the application, as I have a blu-ray player, but my mom does not. Duh. Now, on the other thing, you don't need a blu-ray player, you need a blu-ray movie, which can be obtained from rlslog.net for free in HD, and does not require any special hardware other than something better than a 8500 gt.

It clearly states that you can create avchd disks, which means you can take mkvs you dowloaded and create an avchd disk on a normal dvd and play it in your blu ray player in hd quality if your blu ray player supports avchd

lets say you downloaded a blu ray quality movie but dont have a blu ray burner and you want to watch it on your hd tv( w/ a blu ray or dvd player). that seems like a reason this would be useful, or am i just crazy?(who knows probly am

Oh! how people like to confuse them self, just dl the movie that you want, put it on a 1T Media Server and stream it to the TV via the PS3…………….easy, plus I think that the only films worth watching in HD are the Action Flicks

Forgive my ignorance in this please Sean as this is what I was wanting to know, I dont have a bluray and have no intention of paying $400 to $500 American for one either, nor do I intend to start buying bluray movies until they drop to something reasonable (say $20. or less) So hopefully with this program I wont need to do so in either case.
As for the rest of you children complaining about this app, I guess that means the Matroska program is useless to you as well as this takes the hd and bluray and compresses it to an mkv format, which in turn CAN be burned to a dvd and watched on a normal TV with non noticable loss of picture quality by ConvertXtoDVD 3 or SuperDVD Creator v9.8 so it would seem that all of these to you are garbage programs. Well thank GOD that we dont have to listen to your childish complaints (other then here) and you are NOT the judge of what is placed here or not. As has been stated so many times in the past, you dont like what is being offered then dont download it or leave…your choice as no one is forcing you to stay here.

What software do you use to burn mkv file direct to DVD without converting process?I always need to use SuperDVD Creator v9.8 to convert mkv files to VOB files then burn it to DVD.
The other thing you can do, quite easily, is pop out $100 for a Western Digital Media player. Hooks right up to the HDMI port and plays HD files (MKV files up to 1080p), pics, music etc.
No blu Ray player needed.. ever
Will this burn a .mkv into blu-ray structure?
Ex: 4.4gb .mkv into a BD5 just like i would use imgburn with UDF 2.5 to play on a stand alone BluRay player
Similar to the 720p.BD5.x264 releases by Chakra or BDflix rlsgroups??

Not sure what that'll play on though other than a pc or a "pop-corn player"

Read my post, its called BD-5, it burns a mkv in data but in the blu ray directory structure so some stand alones play it just like if it were a blu ray but its on a dvd5 (4.7 gb)

The usefulness of this app is high but it's necessity is really low.
I might actually use this.
1. Download HD mkv rip
2. Watch on my PC and then burn to AVCHD on a DVD5 so other housemates can watch it on the PS3. Wireless isn't fast enough to stream it and converting to DVD/transcoding it to vob destroys the quality.

I was wondering if this will convert .mkv to .avi without significantly reducing quality as I stream downloads to the TV with a "Linksys Kiss 1600 wireless HD media player" but unfortunately the useless f**kers at Linksys won't upgrade the firmware to play matroska files.
Also I don't currently have a PS3 but was wondering if you can stream matroska files with it instead.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated!

JUST BUY EXTERNAL HDD, DROP YOUR .MKV FILES THERE AND WHOOPS- you got yourself a collection of movies….
sure it costs( the hdd) but if youre in it for free, man, gotta go back in the early 90's and grow up properly….

Read my post. I never said it did not covert it, I said it BURNT it to a dvd. And I have the regular Cathoid ray TV (the one with a picture tube just like the vast majority of you do) and I also have a 60 in Wide Screen LCD/HDTV TV for the living room and guess what…I nor my wife nor anyone else I have shown this to, can tell the difference between the sharpness of the picture and the color of a copied mkv dvd file on either TV as BOTH are just as sharp and colorful as the dvd itself. The ONLY difference is the 60 in TV is naturally a larger picture and creates the illusion that you can see more when you actually cannot see any more on it then you can a smaller screen as the picture is shoved into the space available.
As for @37, do what I do…I built a small computer and installed MS Media Center on it and installed a 2.4TB hard drive. Then I hooked it to my wide screen TV and my internet connection. Now if I am too lazy to step 15 feet into the Comnputer room, I start this and can do all my web surfing on my TV and check my e-mails as well as watch my avi/mpg/mkv files on my wide screen or my 37 in cathoid ray TV in the bedroom. The ones I like I go buy for my collection. The ones I dont like I delete. Total cost for this is less then $450. and my own sweat and time to put it together. I can also rip/record and make cd's as well as dvd's..in fact my media center can do everything my desktop computer can, only with a 60in LCD/HDTV monitor instead of a 21 inch 20dpi Optiquest Monitor.

It wont do that, you need a program that converts mkv to avi without quality loss, which will result in a bigger file
this program burns mkv into a bluray directory so the stand alone bluray player recognizes it as a bluray dist when it actually is just a dvd5
