I dont oppose Obama, however I dont believe hes going to fix everything like people say he is, hes just another politician like the rest of them. Dont get me wrong, he is a way better than Bush, but its sad to see so many people blindly believe int his man. Obama isnt the one neither is bush or biden or mccain, none of these people really give two sh!ts about you.

Will you liberal morons stop worshiping Obama! Good grief! Clinton is the reason we are in this recession, not Bush. Clinton received credit for for what Reagan did. Whoever is president in 2012 will get the credit for what George W did. You liberal morons just dont get it. The effects of an administration are not felt until 8 years after they leave office. George W gets the blame for 911 and after, when it was the Clinton's that financed the Taliban. Bin Laden was in custody during the Clinton years and they orchestrated to allow him to be released. This country would be better off if there were no liberals. Liberalism = ignorance.

The American war on terror is costing the country in excess of $185 billion per year. America's military budget per year is $965 billion – that is 54% of all the money the US has.

Yes, 9/11 COULD be Clinton's fault but invading Iraq???? for what? what weapons? I was there last month for a newspaper piece and you wouldn't believe the hatred being generated for Americans due to this war. THIS will cause bigger and stronger 9/11s – damn, even the Europeons are fed up.

    Whose fault is that?

  20. Jay
    December 29th, 2008 | 03:22

lets just blame that on previous presidents too.

The point is Bush made it to a second term SPECIFICALLY for this reason that people believed him when he said 'it's not my fault'

    Truth.

    Electoral vote: 365 versus 173 <- Wipeout
    Popular vote: 69,456,897 versus 59,934,786
    Percentage: 52.9% versus 45.7%

This does NOT have any reference to a 'stolen' election but to the fact that the republicans need to shut up and accept that they lost the election rather than being sore losers. Oprah didn't win Obama the election – Obama's sincerity (or atleast the perception of sincerity) did.

As for the 'stolen' election. I believe in those authorities who declared that it was a fair election as much as I believed in Bush when he said that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. But You, Rlslog and I – will never know the trust. So that's all there is to it. But remember this before you believe anything:

The man who should be president is Fred Thompson.

The fact of the matter is George Bush made some very bad decisions during his administration, the least of which isn't deciding to invade iraq regardless of what anybody said. For that I am glad we have a "thinking" man in the white house. All the crap going on in the country right now happened on Bush's watch and it is therefore his responsibility. Obama is taking over under tremendous dificulties that were brought about by Bush's misgovernance. Had it not been for how bad the economy was and how completely disrespected this country has become, McCain may have won despite his poor choice of a running mate(and pleeeease don't insult my intelligence!). Most people couldn't bring themselves to vote for a non-white person to become president and some voted for him because they wanted to make history. That accounts for the "closeness" of the popular vote. But overall people were really running as far from Bush and his policies as possible. Throughout the campaign he was calm, thoughtful and decisive. Thats what we want in a president.

No matter what anyone says, Iraq is a multiple year multi billion dollar commitment.

    The return on investment?

    - Loss of American lives
    - Generation of stronger hatred for Americans (if your farmer father is shot dead by American soldiers in Haditha – wouldn't you be tempted to hold a gun?)
    - Economic instability – but most importantly, a crippled social environment. If the taxpayers money is being spent on F-22 raptors than on building more schools and hospitals, what do you think will happen?

I noticed there are some worried regarding Obama's "gung-ho" stance on Afghanistan. Where do you think the troops are going when they leave Iraq. Afghanistan! What country is Obama willing to invade if intel proves terrorist are hiding there. Pakistan!
What country is going to regret Obama's presidency after 10 thousand US troops are killed from a nuclear bomb while they were trying to invade Pakistan.
Every country on the face of the planet.

You people need to go back to civics class. Bush did not invade Iraq, congress did. The president cannot go to war without a declaration of war from congress. Now congress claims that they were deceived by Bush. If that is true, then our congress is nothing but a bunch of idiots, because they gave a declaration of war without having all the facts. So, who is more to blame; congress, who declared war without all the facts or Bush, who presented the facts to congress. I despise ignorance.

  40. deanx

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war

A declaration of war is a formal performative speech act or signing of a document by an authorised party of a government in order to initate a state of war between two or more nations. The legality of who can declare war varies between nations and forms of government. In many nations power is given to the head of state or sovereign. In other cases something short of a full declaration of war such as a letter of marque or a covert action may be executed by privateers or mercenaries.

In the United States Declarations of War are made by Congress which makes the rules for the military. These Declarations have the force of law and are intended to be executed by a Commander in Chief when called into actual service. Even in the United States Declarations of War made by Congress are rare and often confused with declarations of war made by a President as campaign slogans.

It has been noted that "developments in international law since 1945, notably the United Nations (UN) Charter, including its prohibition on the threat or use of force in international relations, may well have made the declaration of war redundant as a formal international legal instrument."[1] In addition to this, non-state or terrorist organisations may claim to or be described as "declaring war" when engaging in violent acts.[2][3] These declarations may have no legal standing in themselves, but may still act as a call to arms for supporters of these organisations.

In recent times, political strategies with the name War on…, such as the War on Drugs may also be said to start with a declaration of war.

  44. Vaclav

Erhm – that's half true – Presidents can declare a start of action before a declaration of war is issued to allow quick response without deliberation.

Congress can pull troops out once the President has sent them and place a "no action" caveat on future requests by him regarding whatever issue however – but it's after the fact and requires deliberation/time.

And note, no formal declaration of war was ever issued for Iraq – nor is it frequent for Congress to contradict the President's decision for action before the declaration is issued. (In fact, quick googling and memory show no cases where they've been at odds in history, but I'm OTW to bed so not going to search too heavily)

As for the political nonsense – the race came down to McCain screwing himself – if he was the 2000 McCain still it would've been a different election, and thusfar with what Obama has shown in his progress (mostly Cabinet selection) he doesn't seem to be going the "Yes Man" approach of the past decades and seems to be going in large part with people that oppose his ideas so that a middle ground is generally followed – which is an admirable concept that I hope does well, although I'm not entirely optimistic. [I'm a tried and true moderate independent - so the idea of actually discussing things rather than everyone saying "Good idea" and pushing it through is A+ in my book - slower perhaps, but I'd rather have slow politics that is done right the first time rather than a back and forth over years with people getting screwed each time until parity is reached]

@65: Iraq is the HOME of the first civilization's remnants – it's a far different nation from Babylon and the other Sumerian civilizations. (I forget if it was Babylon in specific that was located in modern Iraq or not – but one of those civs was)

But yes, getting involved over there will tend to create more terrorists – but from everything made publicly available they're what's agitating the hornet's nest – but not where the nest itself is. Until we, and the UN – since we're a prominent member state, completely turn our back on the area I doubt it will subside any time soon.

And I doubt Gore or Kerry would've changed too much with how things got handled – perhaps a little slower to go in with more intelligence, but considering how much bad intelligence was brought to the Resolute Desk – I don't think too much different would change. (Keep in mind that Powell actually proposed action, and he's renowned as a "talk first to try to resolve" person in every situation – it's part of his entire rise to General-ship.)

Reality is all politicians and political parties will have faults, don't ignore those of your own because of some ingrained allegiance – look at their history, how they carry themselves, and their consistency. (Last being why I couldn't bring myself to vote for McCain unfortunately – loved him in 2000, was still registered R until 2002 so I even voted for him in the Primary then – but his campaign managers had him on a much different road than before, sadly)

Yes, Obama is just another politician, but there are real dumb ones and others who have a brain.

Bushs war with Iraq was just out of retaliation in my opinion, there where no real evidence.

The democrats wouldn't of invaded Iraq and definitely not Afghan. Every smart person knows Bush didn't decide to invade. you cant just invade a country cos some small band of left wing Muslims decide to start a war.

State sponsored terrorism, remember panama, and the CIA giving someone money, Mr B Laden.

You cant beat an enemy you cant see. There is no cure for guerrilla tactics like those of the extreme Islamics groups.

For all you idiots that believe the economy is in the dumps because of President Bush are just that…idiots.

Starting with the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, that was given more teeth during the Clinton administration, Congress started intimidating banks and other financial institutions into making loans, so-called subprime loans, to high-risk homebuyers and businesses.

The carrot offered was that these high-risk loans would be purchased by the government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Anyone with an ounce of brains would have known that this was a prescription for disaster but there was a congressional chorus of denial.

Five years ago, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) vouched for the “soundness” of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and said, “I do not see any possibility of serious financial losses to the treasury.” In 2004 congressional hearings, where the Bush administration sought greater oversight over Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said, “We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac and particularly at Fannie Mae,” adding that “the GSEs have exceeded their housing goals.”

Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., said, “There’s nothing wrong with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.” In these hearings, Barney Frank said that he doesn’t see “anything in the reports that raises safety and soundness problems.”

Earlier this year, Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) praised Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for “riding to the rescue” to help people get home mortgage loans, adding that they “need to do more” to help high-risk borrowers get better loans.

The financial collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is not a failure of the free market because lending institutions in a free market would not have taken on the high-risk loans. They were forced to by the heavy hand of government.

The solution is not a taxpayer-financed bailout. The solution is to let them fail and allow the people who invested in them, as well as the people who purchased homes they couldn’t afford, suffer the losses. Of course that takes a level of political courage that is in short supply. There are other measures that should be taken as part of a second-best solution.

In 2002, when the Enron and WorldCom scandal broke, the Congress held hearings and some chief executives were jailed. Who did what was the big story in the major news media almost every night. Congress rushed to enact the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, also known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002.

The act placed unnecessary, onerous and costly accounting standards on American businesses. The Enron and WorldCom debacle is a drop in the bucket compared to the financial mess that Congress has created through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, in the name of “affordable” housing. Have you heard Congress calling for hearings?

They haven’t called for hearings because many of them, both Democrats and Republicans, receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars, were in cahoots with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. If Americans are going to be on the hook to bail out these government-sponsored enterprises, at the minimum congressional hearings ought to be held to find out who did what and when.

Corporations employ accounting practices promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board that established Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and government agencies have accounting practices that don’t come close to, and never did, the honesty of private accounting practices.

Accounting fraud and deception are the dominant features of government agencies. If a private business kept and cooked the books, like government agencies do, the top executives would go to jail. Shouldn’t the accounting standards businesses have to meet be applied to Washington? My answer is yes and if a congressman says no, I’d like for him to tell us why.

Read the facts…. You Democrat fools are responsible for the economy meltdown and now we have Hussein to fix the problems his party is responsible for.

    Thanks DEMOCRATS!

    @74+75:

Regarding CRA – statistics show that 80% of the loans that failed weren't CRA, yes it was screwed up and part of the equation – but it was far from the whole.

As for Congress doing much in 2 years – someone really needs a history class on the average time for Congress to react to something much less pass legislation on something.

Likely no matter who was at the helm the same problem would've occured because it's a symptom of problems with BOTH parties – but considering how slow Congress normally moves and how the Dems cowtowed to any mention of a filibuster the past 2 years blaming them for not fixing it would be like blaming a parapalegic watching a home burn down for not putting out the fire.

You're correct in that both parties have made mistakes. I just get sick and tired of reading that it is President Bush that caused this entire mess. I may not agree with many of his decisions but people just don't understand how the system works and who is really in charge.

Hussein Obama is going to have his hands full trying to fix many of his own parties mistakes.

The only reason they went in to iraq is becuse its the biggest cash cow ever. the money, the heroin (in afganistan), the massive building contracts, the contracts to supply the troops, the arms contracts, the security contractors (blackwater)ect. iraq and saddam hussain were never ever in a million years a threat to america. but they just couldent go in there without a good reason, and thats what 9/11 was. they needed a bogeyman/patsy and that was osama bin laden. create false terror groups like al-Qaeda and get the public support behind you. i mean al-Qaeda means "the database" and was the name of a CIA database of international mujaheddin and arms smugglers used by the CIA and Saudis to funnel guerrillas, arms, and money into Soviet-occupied Afghanistan.

its all an illusion, a pantomime, the biggest show on earth.

until the masses stop being brainwashed by the media this will carry on and on and on.

dont beleive the politicians becuse they are accomplished liers and conmen and are controlled by the elite.
do your own research and rely on your own hunches and if you ever want to know who is to blame then just follow the money.

    peace out.

while the federal reserve is in existance america will never recover and be a truly free nation. get rid of the federal reserve and you just might have a chance.

    federal reserve = debt
    money = debt
    debt = federal reserve notes

until the people of america truly understand this evil institution no one will be free, its just totally impossible under the federal reserve system.

exactly the same for us brits and the bank of england.

watch the movie "Zeitgeist Addendum" to see how destructive the federal banking system is.

Obama isn't going to fix anything. What you will see is what happened to the Clinton administration, short term fixes that result in even greater long term problems. We are already at the point where minimum wage versus welfare is equal, so people would rather be free loaders than work. The aspirations of working hard to possibly become rich will dwindle because their is no incentive when there is equal playing field regardless of effort or ability. Nature works, pure competition is natural, when the government tries to regulate and control, things backfire because people are not all rational beings, government policy is made in a vacuum, where everyone theoretically thinks the same and works hard. Reality is different, if you could win the lottery or go through Medical school and work your butt off, what would you try if the outcomes were the same. Equality and lack of lust in a perfect society sound great, but just like socialism and communism the idea doesn't apply to the real work and fails. What is truly perfect are the imperfections of a natural beauty.
