This is what he does people, he has been on the “bush/republican bad, democrat/liberal good” schtik so long tat he cannot get off of it and without HBO, he is dead in the water. He is not funny, and never was. He is in the same boat as Janeane Garofalo. Janeane started out as an actress with some promise and was everywhere you look, now where is she? She was fired from her job on 24 because of her foamin at the mouth statements she made, she was second banana in some direct to dvd movies, she was fired from Air America which itself went bankrupt and out of business, she was recently heard on Rosie O’Donnell’s show on Sirus (which will be ending soon because they dont have enough subscribers to pay all the bills according to management) And now Janeane is trying to do stand up again at little 100 people capacity nightclubs and failing at that.Even Comedy Central refuses to place her on because she cannot draw enough to make it pay. Bill Maher is in the same boat and that boat is taking on water because as soon as HBO understands they are carrying him (His show on HBO has been losing viewers a rapid pace according to nielsen) he is gone faster then yesterdays chili dog. I mean he has sunk so low as to appear on Larry King, a person who’s show is so far down in the ratings that he is lucky if he gets a 10th of a share according to nielsen, even the old ECW wrestling show that was reformatted on Syfy was beating King on his best days. Look for Mahar to swiftly vanish from the scene never to be heard from again in the near future.
@20 And Fox News is also the most watched television channel in America, which goes to show how dumb people are in the US. Maher doesn’t worry about the rating and neither does HBO. That is why Maher is on HBO and not on any of the free=to-air channels like ABC, NBC, Fox and CNN. Only those channels constantly worry about ratings as recently demonstrated by the firing of Conan. If Maher worried about ratings and retracting advertisers, he wouldn’t be doing a show on HBO anyway and the would not be as outgoing as he is now compared to his ABC days. FYI, Maher has been doing Larry King and Jay Leno for ages because of his friendship with the hosts. He still has his writers just like any other night time talk show and the only person who openly says he doesn’t need people’s pity. So, suck on that common man!

@20 (common sense): You care way too much about Nielsen ratings. Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce weren’t popular in their time, either.
I’m not saying Maher is another Hicks. He’s not. And he can be a bit annoying at times. He can also be pretty funny. If you agree with his views, the snide sarcasm is fairly agreeable. I thought “Religulous” was pretty hilarious for that reason.
So, you know, if you don’t like him, go watch Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia or whoever you do like. But do yourself a favour and don’t pay so much attention to Larry King’s ratings.

She and Maher were both around LONG before Bush, and happily they didn’t sell their souls a la Dennis Miller.
Too bad they aren’t Glenn Beck – his show is HILARIOUS. And he does comedy as well.

@common sense: fyi, bill maher has been on on HBO since 2003, and was on ABC for a decade before that until they fired him for not being politically correct (ironically his show was called politically incorrect). if HBO didn’t have faith in him or stand by him and his show I doubt they would continue giving him stand up specials. the amount of time his show is on the air each year was actually expanded last year to be all year long as opposed to 12 episodes in the fall and 12 in spring. they also moved the time of his show forward from 11pm to 9pm. all obvious signs his show is a success. Another thing you have to understand about HBO and other premium channels is that most of their shows don’t get their viewers at the time of airing but rather from DVR and on demand viewing. Lastly, His ratings were up 23% last season over the season before that.

@44, for your information Lou Dobbs was on CNN longer then Maher has had a show and I am sure they trusted him as well. Yet the forced him out. That twisted moronic professor out in Colorado was a trusted faculty member and even given tenure, till it was found out that he was a plagerizer and that he had not one drop of Indian blood in his veins and his only claim to that department head office was that he was given an “honorary” membership in some rouge Cherokee tribe that not even the US Government recognizes or the two actual parts of the Cherokee Nation and then insulted the people who died in 9-11…and he was gone. Yes his ratings are up 23%, I will give you that. BUT his ratings had fallen over 32% from last year!! So even if he made up 23% of them, he STILL LOST NINE POINTS! So far since 5 years ago, Maher has lost over 58% of his viewers. At that rate, he wont be around for very much longer. And using the insult of “r3tard3d” since it is now against federal law to do so, is not helping him very much.
