The next person who claims apple’s originality should read a bit about a man called Tony Fadell and his company called FUSE who developed a hard disk MP3 player and then went to REAL to be bought up, was rejected and then pitched his wares at Apple…. six months later the first IPOD was released onto the market… Oh BTW Tony Fadell is now VP IPOD Division at APPLE…. I’m sick of people knocking Bill Gates.
Maybe his a worthless pile of Donkey Pellets personally, but as a businessman and a contributer to the computing world, few people have had anywhere near the impact.
If you can find a way to become the worlds richest man on a technology that was basically the domain or University nerds and Scientists, and be able to see that through it’s ever changing landscape to be the number 1 for your entire career…. You’re doing something right!
And each one of you MAC-Attack kids or Linux loyalists, I bet anything you, as everyone of us, has used his products in one way or another.
So I guess he wins

Capitalism fuels progress. Without it we would not have come as far as we have today in technology. That includes software technology. In that context, open source doesnt make sense.

in 1977 everything was open source. BG sued a user group that used his code and set a precedent that created software that is copyrighted. Sent open source down the shizzer for a decade…

He is no visionary, he is an excellent businessman. I hate what he has done for computers but I can respect the Bill and Melinda gates foundation – Billions of dollars in vaccines to the third world is something I can aknowledge as being more important than my obsession w/ linux.

Everyone slagging Bill has yet to mention that he’s giving almost everything away and becoming a mega-philanthropist. Would the dude who ran Lotus have done the same? Steve Jobs? Would they have been as ruthless at their own businesses to get as far as Gates did with his? Hell no. In years to come people will be thanking God Gates did what he did with MS.

@69 There were a couple of predecessors to Netscape…”WorldWideWeb” in 1991 followed by NCSA Mosaic 2.0 released in 1993. Netscape released in 1994 was the first to incorporate all the features (text,images and graphics)of a fully functional web browser as we know it today.

PS.. Netscape’s original code name was “Mozilla.”
