I was thinking of how much I was bored reading rlslog posts about just reality tv series and typical sitcoms. So here is something interesting – a documentary about a geek that changed the world (for the better or worse, that’s an opinion I leave to you folks). The Money Programme’s Fiona Bruce leads the documentary. Another great release from my favorite tv group. Bill Gates did indeed help things get to where they are today pc/os-wise, but he did so with the help of other people’s software and a total lack of vision. He bought QDOS (?) from some unsuspecting dev, called it MSDOS – cashed in big and then later proceeded to say 640KB of RAM would be enough for everyone forever, and that the internet was just a phase. A phase… Fast forward to today, and everything connects somewhere.
He may be smart, but the luck he’s had is nigh on unbelieveable.
The current state of affairs OS-wise is not something I’d put on my resume were I him (depends on the employer ofcourse – pr/marketing – good, isv/sw dev – baad.). Windows is indeed everywhere, but the design has always been flawed. They’re still patching XP FFS. Reminds me of beta vs vhs back in the day.
If Linux had games, he’d be broke, ’cause I sure would keep to the side of the fence where quality came before quantity.

I will try to keep an open mind on this but I know I’ll be hitting pause and researching statements throughout this, like I do with most things these days.

BTW, Windows XP is the best OS I ever used. I can play all the games I want, I can browse the web, make my living with graphic design on it and skin it like a mac or like… a space shuttle or what not.
Now I just skip the mac vs windows vs Linux posts, threads, blogs, comments, etc… So boring and redundant.

The only reason (MAC) is around today..no offense to mac,..I use one myself..Is because at one time they were going under, which would have …given microsoft a (monopoly)..Gates invested (lent)close to 150 million to apple to keep them alive to avoid antitrust lawsuits..

Yes he did buy QDos for $50,000 change one or two things and call it MSDOS, but at the same time, the guy that sold it to him, needed the money, and says at that time in his life, he would have done it again. Maybe he has no vision, yes, he bailed out Apple, yes he has his hand in Linux, but wouldnt you if you were him? However, none of you have mentioned the real reason why he is who he is. BEFORE acquiring what became MSDOS, this two bit nerd, walked right in to IBM, which was at that time, the biggest and the best and said, We have what you need, but we dont want to sell it you, we want to lisence it to you. And really, all the rest is history, because that meeting changed the face of the world with home computers

@69 There were a couple of predecessors to Netscape…”WorldWideWeb” in 1991 followed by NCSA Mosaic 2.0 released in 1993. Netscape released in 1994 was the first to incorporate all the features (text,images and graphics)of a fully functional web browser as we know it today.
PS.. Netscape’s original code name was “Mozilla.”

He is no visionary, he is an excellent businessman. I hate what he has done for computers but I can respect the Bill and Melinda gates foundation – Billions of dollars in vaccines to the third world is something I can aknowledge as being more important than my obsession w/ linux.
Capitalism fuels progress. Without it we would not have come as far as we have today in technology. That includes software technology. In that context, open source doesnt make sense.
